    The cost of living crisis has been a perfect storm for UK residents. It coincided with the war in Ukraine, which caused energy costs to soar, and Brexit, which resulted in the loss of many shop and haulage workers. Additionally, Brexit has led to hefty inspection charges on all imported goods, containers, and vehicles. While things are clearly bad in the UK, with household bills suddenly tripling overnight, we would like to hear from our viewers overseas. How has the war in Ukraine affected your shopping bills? Are the prices we pay in our country, given current exchange rates, similar to what you are experiencing? Please help us continue this conversation.

      Printing money out of thin air causes inflation. You might want to add that to your list. In regard to Brexit, Germany, the powerhouse of Europe, is on the verge of financial ruin. You haven't seen nothing yet. By the way, any of the cheap brands contain modified starch. Eating a pound of lard is actually healthier.

    In Croatia, it started when we joined the Eurozone. While we had our own currency, everything was somehow under control, but after the introduction of the Euro, prices went wild. It is certain that the war in Ukraine also had an impact, but still, most of the income goes to utilities and food.

    It's not "exasperated" energy costs, it's "exacerbated" energy costs. I keep hearing people make this mistake. "exacerbated" means to make worse. Exasperated is what people feel when this happens.

      @CarlBland-l8l brexit added a minimum shipment tax on every container coming into the country whilst taking away the cheap as chips Eastern European delivery drivers that brought food to our shops. I want immigration down more than anyone else, I want our cultural identity back, but if you look at the cost of shopping increase over the last couple of years, Brexit is one of the top reasons. After a war nobody wanted between Russia and the old USSR republic Ukraine.

    Oh nice kitchen.........hmmmm, I wonder what ours looks like, as I try and keep out of it as much as possible😁. The problem with Brexit is, we have still not had it yet, all of the main parties, the big businesses (who wanted to flood the country with cheap labour who would all be happy to work for minimum wage), the media etc, none of them wanted it, so they have done their best to obstruct it and only done the minimum they could to implement it but there is so much more they could have done if their heart had been in it. I would not have a clue with the prices in the shops, when Mrs Metalman goes food shopping, I go to the gym. Brexit, just like Covid is perfect excuse for retailers and in fact anyone who provides a service of any kind to put up their prices and provide a poor service and I can see this going on for years to come. To be fair you did a great job guessing those prices, I think they should have put you in charge of Brexit, cheers Alan

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Spot on Alan, I bet they were gutted they lost all their foreign staff when our bare bones Brexit eventually went through. £10 on each container coming into the UK, £29 if it contains food items and £149 if it contains mixed items. so that was lumped onto us consumers bills along with the price of training up british workers to do the foreign jobs they dont want to do. great split there Alan, man after my own heart, gym and the shops. I usually crack on with the accounts, invoicing and video editing whilst Jill vanishes for hours on end sourcing these good bargains! id love to be in charge of Brexit, there are many other independent countries getting away with exactly what we should be able to right now. instead we pay France 20 million a year to turn a blind eye to border crossings and then go out and rescue the people smugglers and put them up in hotels us British can’t afford to holiday in. an absolute joke. we need Brexit but we need a party strong enough to toss the deal out of the window that we got and get the same kind of deal many other independent countries enjoy. my kitchen would fit in that kitchen about eight times over and would have a very unruly cat knocking things off shelves and meowing because he wasn’t getting the attention us filming a video was 😂

    Shopping has become a real challenge for many I have to agree. While in Australia and New Zealand I was horrified at the prices. More so in New Zealand as I am more familiar with the prices there. I was really glad I could help out the weeks I stayed with my son and his family. What does annoy me is the products that are often on special. Non essentials that is. Parents don't need, chocolate biscuits, chippies, fizzy ( including energy) drinks and luxury soaps on special but general weekly NEEDS, like butter, eggs, milk, vegetables. One supermarket chain in New Zealand have in the fruit section, a basket with fruit for children ( one per child) free for the taking. We have the luxury of a fresh food market on Friday and Saturday. I have just bought 3 capsicum, a large head of broccoli, 8 nectarines, a punnet of chestnut mushrooms, two punnets ( quite large) of blueberries and 500gr cherries for the magic sum of €13,50 (1€ is 0:85 bp). We buy our fish, cheese and poultry at the market too. I'm watchful for specials at the supermarket. Truth is, one can make a decent meal for little if one has the skills. Many yiounger families don't seem to have had the budget education I had in my day or the cooking lessons etc. I'm not saying there isn't a problem but listening to my mums stories years ago she had it tough too with 4 children and one income. It taught me a lot how to manage my budget. Are we only buying the essentials or do we feel we have a 'right' to more? Sorry, I always like to see both sides of the coin first. Chapeau to those families coping and facing their challenges weekly. Have an awesome weekend dear Jill and Nick. Love this item - needs to be discussed. 👌🇳🇱🙋‍♀🥝

      Wow Anita that is some comment! Super interesting hearing all about the differences in different parts of the world! You are so right about how they discount the rubbish! our supermarkets offer free piece of fruit to children and currently on my Lidl app you get to spin a wheel after spending so much and you win free fruit! I currently have a free punnet of strawberries and a free pineapple! previously we have had a free avocado, free honeydew melon and free raspberries just waiting to win a free watermelon 🍉🤣 shopping at your local market sounds much better and more fun too! we are definitely encouraged to buy much more than the necessary with all the advertising! Lidl and Aldi are really good. Interestingly, I was in Morrison's today, and they had a sign that said price matched with Lidl and Aldi. As you are in Scarborough, it would be interesting to know how Proudfoot compares against them. If they still exist. That jingle is stuck forever in my head. The cost of food is tremendous here...and our major grocery stores have had record profits. So I guess the shareholders and management are making a good living. I usually only buy things when they are on sale and so without on other times. But what a great idea for trying to guess prices! Just water has doubled in the last couple of years and now they are even looking for more. Electricity too...up significantly! The one positive is that I am mortgage free, so at least I don't have to pay that or rent. Just have to do what we can to make ends meets. Take care over there!

    It's so frustrating how things have increased in price, or packages have gotten smaller for the same prices. I agree, wages have not compensated, and for those people in the grocery business it's frustrating as well - I understand it costs more to transport things as well, but it makes one wonder who is benefiting from these higher prices? Very fun comparison though and I'm always fascinated at the grocery store to see what's in people's fridges & pantries.

    The cost of living crisis IS actually happening, and it's kinda alarming how we just live with it like there's nothing to be done, (some don't even realise...). My partner and I used to shop at ASDA, but stopped because they just went crazy putting the prices up. One of the items I have kept my eyes on is the asda finest sausages, back in 2018/19 we could get 2 x £4 , now each package is almost £4!, and they kept putting them up every 3 or 4 months, chicken breast and mince are other examples, fruit juice as well. Restaurant prices, back in 2018 in The Guy Fawkes Inn York, as an example, the 3 course meal was £14.93, now in 2024 the same menu has gone up by almost 15 pounds (£29). I am originally from Mexico, and although we have got the same cost of living crisis over there, wages have gone up accordingly (86% from 2019 to 2024), other countries have responded the same way. Let's hope this new government responds to this issue soon.

      really hear you on that. we used to do a 90 mile roundtrip to visit our closest ASDA as it was renowned for the cheapest prices. a few years ago we did our entire Xmas Shop there and saved a few pounds! not the case anymore, a trip to ASDA is like a visit to Waitrose (never been) back in the day. all the staples are going up and up exactly as you say. we made all the cuts and decisions to cut out budget as soon as possible. shopping at LIDL and ALDI is essential now, the only better cut? leave the UK. we are seriously looking at every option to do just that.l

    Enjoyed this video …. It’s a fun game with a serious message …..Inflation ruins futures and bakes in poverty for so many. Politicians have sought to deflect responsibility for the cost of living crisis whereas a fair proportion of the inflationary pressure has been driven from long term policies of successive governments. What was reassuring though was that you were able to show the impact of what different brands and retailers have on overall cost. Shop smart shop S-Mart

    Those prices are cheap compared to where I live in South Carolina USA. I live in one of the lower cost areas in the US. For my wife, son, and I, we spend around 1500 pounds (where 1 pound = $1.25) per month on food and related items at the grocery store. I do try to buy quality foods including meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables. We rarely eat out, so our budget for restaurants is only around $200 per month.

    Interesting. It does depends where you shop and if you don't mind dropping the quality of some items for store own brand items.
    We shop at Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons and Asda. I can definitely say the money does not go as far in the latter two in recent years. Brand name things like baked beans and soups are seriously expensive now compared to four or five years ago.
    The scary part of Brexit consequences in the butchery sections of supermarkets. Many supermarkets now put a nice little Union Jack on things like chicken breasts. When you check, this meat has come from outside of the UK and even the EU. It is packed in the UK so they slap the Union Jack on it too fool you. There doesn't seem to be a requirement to say where the meat was sourced from anymore. Not that supermarkets haven't tried this trick before. I once picked up some breaded chicken goujons in Asda. The chicken was from Venezuela. Who knows what the food safety standards or animal welfare is like there! Always look for the Red Tractor and support British Farmers where you can.

      gosh that’s a great point Andy about the supermarket branding, absolute nonsense isn’t it? I was getting Family Fortunes vibes here, 'the cordial you said £1, our survey said...' Well done Nick with the guessing, especially the chicken. yikes Morrisons! it is possibly the classiest of the main supermarkets with great bakery and deli stands and dedicated fish and meat stands. Also find the food, particularly the fresh is looked after to a higher standard to keep it at a proper temperature (similar to European supermarkets) but it really comes at a cost. The food in Mexico looks incredible, im still salivating over your last weeks video and am excited that there is a new one this week. I would definitely be eating out all the time when visiting there. it will be interesting to see how much things have gone up in Spain this week. I did expect the chicken to be way more as a single man 20 years ago I’d have struggled to get a KG of fresh chicken for under £5 so for it to be that price now seems very reasonable, especially when it is so versatile in preparing so many dishes. Prices here have gone way up on everything so I’m always looking for cheaper options sales if possible. I buy Nescafé too…only when it’s on sale at 4.99 Canadian ..most of the time it 6.99 or 7.99 or more depending on the store. If tuna is on sale I’ll stock up if I can. Most of the prices here are way too much! Only bananas are still a decent price and I don’t know why ? Thanks for sharing how prices are in the Uk. 👍😊🇨🇦

    Here the prices gone ridicolous. And I check offers all time.
    Before covid we got easy 6 full bags on weekly shopping. And then we got all sorts!
    Now... we are lucky if we got more than 3 bags and then we don't always buy everything either.
    Everything have been much more expensive. Started with the covid period, then the war in Ukraine was an "excuse" and then inflation on top of all.
    Swedish kronor are not good in value and even if we had pay rise, it has not cover all new prices.😮 They say our wage "gone down 4.8%" with all those extra costs. And that's even with our wages gone up! So the ekvation don't work... and many struggle.
    I am only happy we got jobs, Trevor and I. But latest year it feels like we can't afford much. Cause too much goes to necessary things now. And then most of times it isn't anything fancy either.
    Thanks for the video...
    And to give a hint our weekly shopping for 2 grown ups cost us at least between £100-130 easy... And we still might have to buy something more to cover 7 days.
    Have a great weekend both 🦇🖤🖤🖤🖤🦇

    I was way out. I genuinely haven’t got a clue. Only thing I know is the price of milk. I’m lactose intolerant and we shop in Lidl where is about£1.15. In most other shops it’s about £2.20. When my wife told me that I couldn’t believe it 😳
    Great concept once again. You and Jill are always thinking out of the box and I love it 😁👍❤

      thank you Phil (no cheating honestly), I really do detest supermarkets and only ever go in them when I’m on my hols. Some things you can’t unsee like the price of Pepsi Max when it flashes up on telly so I had a clue about things like that but beyond that clueless. I haven’t drank milk for years so I’d have guessed £1.50 on that one? does seem that we are both saving a lot of money by shopping at Lidl. i played this game with some family members who watched the video and they shop at Sainsburies and knew how much everything was there. there total came to £47. So on a days shop they are spending £18 more! hopefully I’ve converted them to Lidl!

      thank you Simon 🙏 it’s no wonder we have so many industries striking with wages not rising in line with inflation. as much as I didnt vote for or against it I did believe that things would improve post Brexit but the lack of haulage and shopping workers has seen these retailers have to pay top money for UK staff and training whilst every container coming into the UK (and leaving) has to do so with a container checking charge, introducing an extra cost on every item coming in. All things that should have been negotiated better by Boris.

    ah the good ol Brexit BS, I work in importing and exporting and it goes as smoothly as it did before Brexit, no effect whatsoever. Greed is the reason for price increases.

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well I agree with the greed part, particularly on UK taxation of things Europeans get much cheaper such as Alcohol, Pops, Sweets, Cigs, etc but Brexit has its positives (I’m for a Brexit btw just wish the deal was better), since Brexit our pound has risen against the Euro which is great news. On the other hand inspection of every container coming into the country is charged at £10 for low risk and £29 for medium risk or £145 if it’s a mixed container. That fee has to be passed onto us consumers. Secondly it’s hard to fathom the amount extra we have to train and pay for UK staff to take the shop and haulage jobs that most Brits don’t want to do. That cost also is forced on us consumers.

    • @GENerationXplorers
      @GENerationXplorers  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Some positives about Brexit is the pound is growing against the euro which is a great thing and will continue to so as the Eurozone continues to devalue itself. As for food costs well each low risk container coming into UK is charged at £10 a medium risk at £29 and a mixed container at £145. The shortage of foreign shop and haulage workers has meant that British citizens have had to be trained and paid properly to do the job and all those costs have pushed the price of goods up and hurt us consumers. But your right about the greed we have one of the greediest Governments in the world with taxation on lots of food and drink items!

    • @hughzarie1860

    • @martinluke9470

      The real cause is the depreciation of the fiat currency which people think is money. It has been printed out of thin air for about 50 years now and is near worthless. That is why people have to hand over more of it and the government/central bankers working together call it inflation. Fooling all you who believe it. If it was Brexit, why does the whole world suffer this "inflation". Use your brain if you have one.

    Inflation the tax that's constantly in everyone's face that not many people see as a tax. The main source of inflation is the Government cos they borrow more money into existence. I must start shopping at Aldi as it seems very cheap in comparison to say Asda or Sainburys. Nick did very well considering he doesn't do the shopping. I'm surprised you drink the sugary fizzy stuff. Eggs, pretty close!! Bread, that’s good. It’s ok, we won’t comment on each one haha. To be honest, you haven’t been a million miles away on many of them except the watermelon.
