    Cherished place to me growing up in the 2000s, funny to think all that's changed are the people!

    My first duty station in the Navy was at Naval Medical Center San Diego. My room in the barracks overlooked Balboa Park.

    The park was definitely more active, and used back then! I do remember.

    Its Ektachrome 160 sound Super 8 film to the 11 minutes mark, where it goes silent, with the footage developed April 1975. Then it gets a little choppy at 19:26, maybe a frame rate change, but note the color is not consistent and it has to do with the various cartridge changes and not how it was stored. Most of this color is pretty good and an XL camera was highly likely used. Too bad there is no Kodachrome 40 here, as that would look more colorful and still would have turned out fine on a sunny day. With some more work, you could even get better color and definition out of this footage. Thanks for posting.

    Thank you for all of these! This one is special. Such a perfect day and so much going on. I’m always hoping to catch a glimpse of my friends and family in these vids but sadly, no sign of us. If there was a way to insert myself into a movie forever ala Twilight Zone, I think I’d choose this one. 😍

    This is great! Every weekend felt like a festival when I used to frequent Balboa Park in the late 70's/early 80's - brings back some great memories. I wonder if there are places that feel like this now (or will once we get past the pandemic..) Especially fun to see Jackstraws (David Kendall & Jeff Pekarek) - just before I would have met them!

      Was born in 69' so, grew up here in the 70's and 80's. Sadly, like most places, this is an atmospere that no longer exists. It had been slowly dissapearing for a long time, but it seemed to pick up pace around 10 years ago. However, post 2020 began something altogether different. No matter where you go now, there's an ugliness/nastiness in a lot of people here that never really existed before. No more are the days of "good vibes in the Southern California sun". As a result, in the last year I've begun to stick closer to home most of the time and try not to go places after dark if I can help it. It's incredibly sad to see what's happened. The world has always had it's problems with crime and bad people, San Diego is by no means any different so, I'm not simply waxing nastalgic about some fantasy image of "the good ole days", but on average most people were generally kind, considerate and compassionate towards others. Those formerly common attributes are lacking to a great degree as of late. I'd leave in a heartbeat if I could.

    I have it clocked at 1976, that's when the Koala craze hit San Diego, the new Koala enclosure.

      I saw a chevy chevette which came out in 1976 so it was definitely post 76.

    @ 03:30 we see the old Aerospace Museum...so this is pre Febuary 1978. We also have some mid 70's skateboards with "new" urethane wheels. We also see an old SDPD "Henry" Unit (Ambulance) 1975 ford van. So my guess is this was shot between 1976 and feb of 1978. Have Ken Kramer send me a dozen "Heavenly Donuts" from next to the Midway Drive-In. Only JW would get a shot of a Mike Ambrose trash can.

      @@DavidCKendall he's referring to an archive of video & film i rescued from the estate of Jack White, a local TV news personality. There's lots of stuff on my channel from that archive, but this film isn't one of those.

      Half of the film has sound and half is silent

    • @peahix
      @peahix  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      amateur film from this time frame is typically silent, so the fact that there's sound on any of this footage at all is really just a bonus.
