  • This week we sit down for a coffee and conversation with Steve Winenger, founder of Ripcord Industries, covering how he went from a manager at Dairy Queen as a kid all the way to his time in the military and his law enforcement career in SWAT. There are a lot of laughs mixed in with some dark stories, so viewer discretion is advised. And yes, we know LEOs are civilians too.

I grew up in a neighboring city to Steve so it’s funny hearing all the names and knowing exactly what he’s taking about. I watched him on TH-cam years ago. Then when I was at the academy he was a guest instructor for firearms and I remember thinking “hey I know that guy, he’s famous!” Haha

Just found your channel and really enjoyed it. I did 12 years as a Marine Rifleman and it is good to hear the tactical combat side I miss so much, but enjoy hearing the human side we all go through in life. Its the mistakes, the loss and wins in life that sets us on journey that leads down the story worthy parts of our lives.

I rolled my racecar at 70 mph on the street in some hilly backroads roads mid turn when the lower ball joint popped and the car oversteered. Its a 1900lb car without properly working seatbelts and had no airbags. The car landed upside down and nearly flattened the whole roof. Lessons learned:
-Tie down the medical. Mine literally flew out of the broken window
-make sure you have a way to signal to other cars coming down a dark road. My car was almost hit many times because there were no street lights
-dont tell mom, even if you are 25 and live alone

I remember before Columbine, there was a high school in my town that had one of the first publicized school shooters in the US. I think at the time, the town was around 55,000 people so it was still small enough that swat wasn't really an option. Years later, I listened to a great podcast that got the first responder on to talk about his experience. Yeah, he had to go in on his own. The shooter took out two kids in the school as well as his parents and he wounded 25 others before several other students were able to take him down and hold him until that officer and several others got there.
The authorities aren't always going to make it in time, and when they do, your priorities and theirs may not always match. Start today living boldly by the integrity of your convictions because if you don't have balls now, they're definitely not going to suddenly drop in a terrifying situation.

What he is describing was starting in the military in the 80's. Closing squadrons an being forced to leave at 19 years has led to the debacle that happened in the Afghan exit. It's systemic in the DoD contractor community also. The guys in several contracting companies I worked for who wouldn't kiss butt but were dedicated in operations usually made their money and left. I miss the comerraderie of both. Love the content guys and yes this nation is in trouble. Awesome guest and interview.
