  • Rob gives a brief description of the function of a jointer compared to a smoother. GIves some reasons why this might be missing from your kit and why you should consider it. Woodriver from Woodcraft.

I love my power tools, but occasionally I wonder how some of my old furniture was made and shaped before the days of power tools. I’m learning how in the Cosman shop from a modern-day master in his TH-cam classroom. This is fun!

Grat explanation of the Jointer. I have a #7 clone made many years ago when Craftsman was still a real tool company. Bought old, used and in bad shape but a week of so of work brought it back to life and able to pull a .001 shaving from some rough sawn boards (6/4 x 10')I get from a friend for a project. Love the videos.

Hi Rob, this was a great video on the #7 plane. I am considering adding one to my collection. I had in mind before I seen this video the #8 lie-Nielsen which is a bit bigger and heavier but now I have confused myself. Which would you recommend? Thanks Rob

Just my thoughts on this. I have both grab the 8 most of the time. I love the weight powers through hard woods.

Could I make do with a number 6, as I’m a smaller person and No 7 is just so long? Thx

Got a used one for $20, I would like new but don't use it that often.

I want to get me one of these to add to my collection, would you recommend the Woodriver one? or spend more and get a Lie-Nielsen one? is there any difference apart from price?

Rob helped design the wood river planes so he will probably recommend them first as he is bias towards them,

Hi Rob, if someone already has a No. 5 (or 5 1/2), would you suggest going with the No. 7 over the 6? Thanks!

Rob knows more about handplanes than I probably will ever know. But if interested in my take. A 6 is commonly used with a camber iron more for initial flattening and fast stock removal then finished with a jointer 7 or 8. I would get the jointer first a 6 is to short to get a flat board. My 6 is only used occasionally my 7 and 8 (which I prefer ) touches every board I glue together.

Go with the 7, the 6 is too close in length to the 5 1/2.
