- Zavala is willing to throw his life away for a chance to defeat The Witness by communing with it, having lived a life in the shape of loss. As the dissenters inform Zavala of the Witness true place and intent in the universe with the Traveler. However, his Ghost, Targe, arrives and challenges the Witness, seeing fear within it, which the Witness replies by making him pay the ultimate price. Crow, Cayde 6 and Ikora pull him out before he can be consumed. They attempt to comfort him as he mourns the lost of his several century-long friendship with Targe. Rest in Light, Targe

Yep. And the Witness showed it _WAS_ afraid. Just like it accused Calus of in Lightfall, yet it was deep down more scared because of its desires to control a universe it can't change, and change what it can't control, but failing to see how life is what we make it.
Targe is one tough son of a bitch I respect his bravery
He was also very loyal, since that courage and loyalty saved Zavala from a terrible fate.
Targe’s final words were; “Yes, you are.”

And Targe nailed it-- that's the only reason the Witness killed him. He nailed it perfectly that the main soul guiding the Witness was afraid, trying to, as Ikora said, change what it couldn't control and control what it couldn't change with the nature of the Final Shape, just as I sensed fear from it with how it spoke to Calus after the Radial Mast was destroyed in Lightfall. It's why the Witness wishes to just calcify and effectively end life-- it is afraid of the fact it can't control life, and doesn't understand we give it purpose, nothing else.

He was. And his sacrifice saved Zavala from becoming a part of the Witness, and Zavala learning the means needed fo defeat the Witness thanks to what the Dissenters told him with "What was made can be unmade".

I find it fitting that the first being to be sabotaged or taken over by the Witness (our ghost) (2019-2020) was the one to destroy it

This scene went hard for so many reasons but seeing a small being of light stand up to a world ending monstrosity gave me chills bc other Ghosts shit themselves just hearing the Witness talk. Targe: the realest Ghost to ever do it.
And his courage saved Zavala from being consumed by the Witness and becoming a part of it, which has gotta be a fate worse than death!
cue Zavala using the darkness to make up for his lack of light, becoming the only stasis titan main XD
It also shows how Zavala had grown to be willing to use Statis since he was worried about Guardians using it initially. And how he wants to keep fighting just as Targe did.
@@BryonYoungblood Yup. Really shows he moved past his initial bas, and is willing to use the darkness if it means he can keep on fighting (his first concern when he lost his light is that he was now useless)
fun fact, its also why I really gravitated towards darkness even with just stasis for the exact same reason: a guardian wielding it is still a force to be reckoned with even with their ghost destroyed should it happen.
@@thorveim1174 Agreed. It's also hesitation and fear that made Zavala be unwilling to use Statis at first, not just because of the idea of using the same power of Darkness the Witness used. And I'm sure Targe would understand. Plus we've seen Eris using Statis, and I'm sure Osiris knows how to use Strand and both of them lost their Ghosts and their connection to the Light, similarly to Zavala.
@@BryonYoungblood even if you aren't a Lightbearer, you can still use Darkness, as demonstrated by Elsie. of course, without a Ghost, if you die, you don't come back.

The Witness was created as a mass ritual self-sacrifice of a billion people. They all had the same overall mindset, but different purposes/goals. The First Knife (the sect that cast out the dissenters and trapped them in statues) were fully on board w/ "The Final Shape", and the dissenters were not, they tried to sabotage The Witness (which they were a part of unwillingly at that point) from within, and they succeeded. Any great entity or corporation can be destroyed by one thing, the people who work in it.

@@Buoyant_BearAnd the First Knife would cast some Dissenters out into the veiled statues we’ve seen- like Clarity Control in the Deep Stone Crypt, the one in the Pyramid ship on Europa and also the one in the Black Garden at the end of Garden of Salvation, with their trying to communicate with us, to warn us about the Witness I’m sure even while still trapped in Darkness.
Keith David does a pretty good job voicing Zavala
Nah, he really didn't. When Zavala talks stoic? Sure. But when action comes.... there's just no replicating Lance Reddick. Sorry, but every time Zavala spoke, I mentally shut Keith David out and replaced his lines with Lance's voice. Keith did a really half-ass job. I'm just hearing Saint's Row 4 Keith. Thel Vadam.... I'm just not hearing Zavala. It's just not the same. Not at all. Maybe he'll get better? Mara Junot did, but there's just no replacing Gina Torres either.

If the collector’s edition lore is to be believed, it’s likely that everyone who joined to make the Witness did so voluntarily, or they risked being killed, since the Witness is made of a certain faction of precursors. I believe some of the think they’ve gone too far, rather than being forced to join in the first place.

It was, and then we got the powerful delivery of Targe going "I see fear!", especially when he realized the Witness is afraid after Ikora pointed out that it seeks to control what it can't change, and change what it can't control, such as imprisoning its own people in the veiled statues when they chose to oppose the Final Shape, or the Final Shape itself meant to calcify and end all life effectively, while the Witness "chooses" who gets to do what. Brett Dalton was on fire with his delivery as the Witness in the Final Shape DLC for sure!

I like how the witness was fading away when targe was rebelling implying his will was so strong he could break the witness if only for a moment

I like to think zavala was about to be consumed, a final death. What's more useless, a ghostless guardian, or a guardianless ghost. Very few instances of finding a 2nd guardian.

Well, in radio dialogue Zavalla was asking Ikora to teach him how to use stasis, so I reckon we'll see some of it.
Our Guardian used strand and ended up dying. Zavala doesn't have a ghost anymore so may be risky

I think the traveler was inpowering targe he should've died instantly but he didn't its like when rhulk tried to take the light the traveler blew it up n talked through it and u can see the witness actually look scared when they opened ita hand n it was getting cut up by light and then crushed him harder destroying it u can see the fear in its eyes when targes glows with light like he say the traveler threatening them
It's a brief foreshadowing of how we defeat the witness with our Ghosts in Excision. It knows the pure Light will destroy it.
I really want to buy the Final Shape, due to the story and the one finisher in the season pass called "The Final Slice" (sickest finisher ever). If only steam sale happens fast.

Same boat,I got lightfall and the 30th anniversary+forsaken before the final shape launch but I really dont have the money to get this expansion at full price,despite me not really liking that bungie released prismatic before the third darkness subclass The Witness having more screentime makes me want to get it
You could try getting it 3rd party. Something like cd keys or fanatical. I got the dlc+annual pass for $70.

I love the writing of this franchise. Witness denying its fear is adorable. When you end up wanting to control literally everything so you guarantee a good outcome, thats fear 😂
The Precursors tried so desperately to force purpose from the Traveler but could never find thst purpose inside themselves.
Despite everything that's happen, I wish we could play this game in an offline server so we can enjoy the story. Cuz I see way too many bringing their friends and they do silly things to ruin the moment our characters are having. Going like "Look at meeee look at meeee" lol

People are also getting error coded out of cutscenes, and thus missing them entirely. That's why I am watching it, cause I only got about the first 15 seconds in game. So its good that it is up for those that want to get the story they were robbed of due to error codes

I really thought Zavala would somehow lose his voice and Targe would translate through sign language and Tage was voiced by Keith David who after being murdered by the witness would pass on his voice to Zavala. Zavala might learn sign language from Targe when the traveler gave the ghosts knowledge and taught Zavala and Safiah because Hakim could have been deaf.

Whoever came up with the idea of the Witness, an amalgamation of a race was freaking amazing. The same with the voice of the Witness. One of the best villains in the gaming history.
I felt like Targe crashed out. I think Zavala had the resolve to resist the Witness. Who knows… the scene felt a little off

We kinda do in a way.
Our characters are made in a way where we can write our own lore for them. So, while there’s no feature to actually rename your Ghost, you can still just name it yourself. My Ghost is named Atlas.

It shows that a leader also fights with his own doubts and fears.
Nonetheless, he confronted the Witness resulting in knowledge on how to defeat it.
