Ultimate MX Hauler review, how to, upgrades, and tips

  • The Ultimate MX Hauler is the best way to haul your dirt bike. The bike's frame sits on the hauler's platform and is held on by special foot peg retainer shafts. A bottle jack is used to lift the platform up and down for loading and unloading. It fits into any standard 2" hitch receiver.
    Some tips that aren't in the video or just needed elaboration:
    1. If you use the provided aluminum jack handle and the provided wing nuts you will wear the jack handle out sooner or later and it won't be able to grab the wing nuts. That is why I use regular hex nuts and a ratcheting box end wrench. Originally I made my own jack handle out of a steel pipe but eventually I just got tired of those wing nuts.
    2. Recently I arrived at the track and had a real tough time unscrewing the provided threaded safety pin. I got it unscrewed with a ton of effort and saw that the threads on the pin had somehow been pulled apart basically. I decided I'd modify the hauler to accept a 5/8" hitch pin so this wouldn't happen again. (I also use a hitch pin in the receiver because I didn't like dealing with the provided threaded stabilizing hitch bolt. I don't notice a difference in stability, maybe someone can chime in if they've noticed a difference.)
    3. If you forget to bring your bike stand to the track, the hauler can do the job pretty well.
    4. I originally had a shelf style hauler and after a few uses decided I wanted something better. The Ultimate MX Hauler is worth the extra money, especially if you haul often.
    5. I've had the bottle jack fail on me before. No problem really I had a friend help me lift the bike so I could get the safety pin in. I recommend having a spare bottle jack though. They're less than $20. Don't buy one that is too tall, it won't fit. The one I've found that is identical to what comes with the hauler is www.amazon.com...
    Also I've found you occasionally need to bleed the bottle jack and sometimes add oil to it so you don't have to pump it so many times to get your bike up. I just use whatever oil I have nearby. I've probably had to do it maybe twice a year.

    if you have driven off road with it how was the stability? wondering if it would rock and twist/torque less than the typical platform ones do on rougher surfaces (those bounce the bike a lot on rocky dirt roads and I worry about the twisting forces off road...perfectly fine on regular surfaces though). just wondering how this might compare...

    How did you get a 5/8 hitch pin to fit? Because of the threads, the largest that will fit for me is a 1/2 hitch pin.

      I drilled the hole out to fit. My original threaded pin’s threads were damaged just from road vibrations and just enough that when it came time to load the bike after a race I couldn’t get the pin to start in at all. Luckily I had my thread file and was able to repair and secure the bike. But ever since that I decided a hitch pin was the best way.

    Hey great carrier, is there any chance you could kindly share the specs with me? As I would like to build one for myself (unfortunately in Uruguay we don’t have that)

    Do you have airbags for your rear suspension? I also have a 4runner

      No but only because I used to have them in my Pathfinder and they were unreliable, deflated or popped at bad times. Reliable ones would be a nice addition.

      I have a 5th gen. No bags or upgraded springs. No issues even with a 430lb KLR.

    Based on your experience with this hauler, would you have any reservations about using it for a long trip (1000 miles) at highway speeds (75mph+) on the back of a minivan???

    • @majorleaguemotoring
      @majorleaguemotoring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd have no reservations at all. I do however double check all the bolts are tight whenever I stop for gas.

      I have had mine for over 10 years now, and have done many long trips with it. Couple of things I disagree with on this video. I tried just a “pin” in my tow hitch, I experienced a lot of rocking back-and-forth. I think the manufacturer made that thread for a reason. I also don’t agree with shaving the nut off of the safety pin which is also threaded. If you will notice it sucks the two sides in against the main bar when it’s tightened, that adds to the strength of the overall package. If you just put a pin through those flat pieces of metal are going to flex and overtime will break just like any other metal that gets bent back-and-forth 1 million times.. Again these guys are engineers who put this together, and I wouldn’t go altering any of it.

      @@Oldguynotbald Depends on who made your receiver. My 4runner has a very tight receiver. I never use the anti-shake things. They won't even fit anyways.

    Are you able to open your trunk with the bike on the carrier and all the way lowered? Considering this for my sequoia but I want to open the trunk with the bike on

    • @majorleaguemotoring
      @majorleaguemotoring  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can open the back with the hauler lowered yes, but if it’s up but not bolted in yet I can kinda angle the bike and turn the wheel to the left and open the back. Not sure about the Sequoia, depends how tight the tow hitch is under there and the slope of the rear door I guess 🤔 Nice thing about the 4Runner is I can roll down the rear window for accessing cargo.

      @@majorleaguemotoring Thanks for the reply. Ended up buying one from my buddy and opening the rear window was my solution as well. Thinking about getting a hitch extender but Im not sure how it will affect the tongue weight capacity

    Thanks for the video. Been looking at these. I searched for other brands and found an off brand on eBay fo $325. Might give that one a shot to save some money.
