So glad to see Keith so happy again. It's amazing what a little ice can do, As I sit in my house bored to death I envy your being stuck in Fiji on a beautiful boat surrounded by the people you love. I don't think life gets any better than that, Rock on, Finn!
Yeah ... maybe put a MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor ) in parallel with that solenoid to absorb the odd transient voltages (quick rises/drops /spikes ( you know? high dv/dt ) ). Sometimes too, a quick change in current in inductive circuits ( solenoid ) produces high momentary voltages that burns right though the winding insulation (it's just a thin layer of varnish you know? ). You could even perhaps buy one to protect the whole boat from spikes - put it on the main ac/dc panel feeds. Probably good for lightning strikes too.
The issue with ingrown toenails is even with local anesthetic, the infection usually renders it useless. I had one removed. The doc kept giving me more and more and finally said “our only option next is a nerve blocker”. I opted for him to do the surgery without the nerve blocker. It was one of those rare occasions where I was in so much pain and this man took off my entire toenail and cut the side of my toe open that I couldn’t speak. Physically couldn’t speak. All I could muster was sharp exhales through gritted teeth and my mind just screaming “it’s almost over, it’s almost over, it’s almost over”. Don’t let your toenails get infected people.
When the nail grows back in it will ingrow and get infected again. I use neosporin into the nail groove when the new toenail starts to cut into the skin. I do use a clean medical utensil to get the neosporin deep into the groove where bacteria collects.......
I notice the ceiling in the office. After living in the very southern end of Belize for several years the mold and stains look familiar. The hospital had a male ward, female ward and birthing ward. No operating room, no air conditioning and mold everywhere. The closest medical facility to us was about 3 hours north in Belize City that was semi modern. For American standards most people would not go there. However the doctors and medical staff were very attentive and did the best they could with what they had. There was a facility about 5 miles north of where we lived that was ran by the Catholic Church and staffed with a volunteer doctor and a few nurses as well as medical students that volunteered for 4 weeks at a time. The students would get credit hours and part of their student loans paid for volunteering. They gave great care and the 3 room facility was kept a lot cleaner than the country ran hospital in town. The best hospitals in the country were private owned but they were not what we in the states would only go to for an emergency. Makes one appreciate the care we have here in the USA.
I appreciate your thoughtful comments on healthcare in other countries. About a decade ago, my brother broke his wrist while snowboarding in Canada. A local hospital (shocking ... they had experience with A LOT of similar injuries) set it and put a cast on it. He received a bill of about $50. My brother --having heard horror stories about Canadian medicine -- went straight to his own doctor when he arrived back in Seattle to "make sure" everything had been done right and he wasn't going to lose the arm to some socialist medicine quackery. His doctor told him that whoever set his arm had done a superb job, and scheduled a time for him to revisit several months later to remove the cast. Total cost of that visit: $1,300.
I live in Thailand. In 2011, my wife had a C-section when our daughter was born. The cost was less than $100. I didn't bother filing an insurance claim. Health care in the US is robbery.
Z Crew - to stop ingrown toenails (usually on the big toes) make sure that EVERY time that you cut your toe nails, lift the corners so that you can cut them off square, right to the corners. When they grow they will bulldoze straight over the skin. If you don't quite cut to the corners, they rip into a point, which then burrows into the skin as the nail grows. Try this simple tip and it will save you lots of pain. Eventually you will naturally end up with channels through the skin for the nails to glide in.
I totally agree with you on the foreign medical. At my job I talked to a mom who's daughter had broken her leg in France went to hospital stayed a bit and then later had to go back to hospital in Germany and have emergency surgery. It was like 4300.00 usd. Got back to US and did follow up and everything was done great.
Sam, I have the same plan but I intend to do it a little differently. I have already crossed the Pacific ocean (Celebrity Solstice) crossed the Atlantic (Celebrity Edge) just waiting for the Covid restrictions to end so I can scope cruise across the Indian ocean. So I'm on the instalment plan one cruise at a time.
Oh my gosh. I sat here with my hand over my mouth moaning. I can't stand needles and I thought I was going to pass out. My dog was looking at me like I am crazy. But, I felt so badly for you. You are quite a trooper. Keith is the "fix it man" for certain. Way to go.
It was refreshing to listen in on your conversation with the Australian government agent. You have been in a madeningly frustrating situation for months now and when you finally see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, some new hurdle stops you in your tracks. It takes real strength of character to not take your frustration out on the poor guy who was just trying to do his job and help you the best he could. Even if you have to stay where you are, I just know everything is going to work out just fine. 2021 is surely going to be an amazing year. There is no possible way the universe has any shit left to dump on us, so things simply have to improve.
Kieth. I am a retired appliance repair mechanic. I use to work on that brand and I actually owned one myself. The most common problem was the actual ice maker inside the unit. Try to find a spare, you will need it in your salty environment for sure. See if Anna can find it here in the states. They aren't cheap.
I had a terrible ingrown toenail and had this done, and as long as it does not grow back after being cut out, you will be sooooo glad you did it. I never had problems with my toe ever again.
Renee... I had the same toe issue from vert skateboarding back in the late 70s. The secret is putting a small ball of cotton (less than the size of a pea) under the corner of the toenail as it grows back (with a pair of tweezers). Make that toenail grow upwards over time. Super easy to get the size of the cotton ball too big at first. Just remove and make a smaller one until you can handle the pain. Failure to get that toenail growing upwards means it could come back and visit you again.
You have to be living on a boat to understand the value of ice in your cold drink. The solar panel, The battery, the energies management... ice is the ultimate luxury. I only have a ice box in my boat.
Thanks for the amazing videos each week . Because of y’all I bought my first 2 sailing books and plan on taking my first lessons in Jan 2021. I don’t see my self being able to sail the world but I’m so glad I found y’all’s channel and have learned so much !!
Renee, I had to do that not once but twice and the last one finally did the trick. My left nail still grows crooked yet the isn’t the doctors fault, that is from the accident that started the nail problems. The first cut time didn’t feel to good and the second one didn’t hurt and it was a success. Course the first time I did get to drink and bbq with friends. All this means you have my sympathy for the cutting and hope that it keeps the nail from growing back into the skin again causing you pain.
@Gus Erland you must be a cutting edge podiatrist? My podiatrist must be old school like this dr because they always cut the nail back on the ingrown side to allow the nail to grow out.
I so love your sense of humor! Renee you made me laugh so hard when you said you where are you n bed rest and the thing you said you can’t do. I am laying down with my husband and that is his biggest complaint.
hi Rene, Ingrown toenails can be prevented. Just make a little "v" shape in the middle of the nail every time you cut it. When the nail grows it will fill the little "v" shape instead of ingrowing. It woks !!!
Just FYI: At 10:49 Keith is talking into the wrong side of the phone. When you’re on speaker phone, the microphone and speaker flips, so you listen at the bottom and speak at the top. The way he’s holding it now, he’s actually talking right into the noise cancellation mic, so the person he’s talking to is gonna experience a muffled and weak voice.
It looks like Finn is playing over jam tracks. You can buy them for every instrument & you have a full backing band to play with. It's a GREAT way to get even better on the guitar! 😁💙💚💜🎄🎄🎄
I hope your big toe is feeling better soon Renee. I’ve had ingrown toe nails before, I now go to a podiatrist every 10 weeks. No more ingrown toenails. Keith was on a mission for ice. Well done. Hopefully you will be able to get into Australian waters soon. If you get a chance after the cyclone season, the Whitsundays are absolutely stunning also Cairns which is where I live. Beautiful tropical weather.
Read all the comments and never once saw anyone mention it, but after having an ingrown nail for almost two years and going to the emergency room where the doctor shot the lidocaine in my two in about 3 seconds, waited about 15 seconds, and proceeded to cut open my toe and yank the nail out...It hurt so bad that I bit completely thru a paperback book I was reading. In a month it was back and worse, so I went to a podiatrist who took almost 15 minutes to inject the lidocaine when I asked him why so slowly he said there is something about the bones in your feet that causes terrible pain if it's injected quickly. Then he waited almost 1/2 hour to actually remove the infected nail area. I never felt a single pain. I was about 14 & now I'm 71, never had that toe act up again.
Glad it went well. In the U.K. it would be free but the wait would be elastic and always delayed. We also have private Medicare but it’s a queue jump so GBP 200 to 250 for your care needs.
renee, i’ve had four ingrown toenails taken out, one on each side of both my big toes!!! i can testify that this is some of the worst pain with the numbing. glad to see you had a great experience!!
Hi guys. Hope your foot is ok Renee. Video suggestion: Can you make a video about the actual filming? The cameras, the editing , the drone, Final Cut, color grading etc. a tech centric video
I know you were just joking, but to be fair, there wasn't anything about foreign in the title. Unless they changed the title maybe and I didn't notice? lol
I can’t tell you how many ingrown nails I’ve had over my life, Keith is correct, the lidocaine injections do most of the time hurt more than just pulling it yourself, that’s why I do all mine at home now.
Yes! Please more content of y’all living life within the community you are visiting. I have watched for years but a mix like this video is always my favorite style despite Keith’s terrible videography skills.😂
Ok Z Mom here is the solution for preventing in grown toe nails. Snip the nail straight across. Do not round the end of your nail. Keep them square. Love you channel!
Love it. i had them when i was a kid, i always found when it started to get ingrown if you cut a V into the toe nail so the sides were longer than the middle, it would stop the sides from growing as fast and the ingrown would go away.
75us in my country is $11.325. I'm so gratefull that in my country there is a public health system that covers consultation and many, many, many procedures (even for foreign person)
I have the same ice maker and have changed that water valve 3 times. And like you the last valve was different from the original and I made it work and have not had any problems with it in over a year. Another thing you may need to watch for is the small fan under there has gone out on mine twice. You may not have any trouble, but it's something to think about. I do look forward to your channel every week. Stay safe and throwing a hand up from sunny South Ga.
Have to admit last week the “sell the boat comment” had me worried...nice job! Thanks for showing the quality and affordability of health care abroad and disparities here at home. I’ve been to 25 countries and never experienced foreign Medical care. I am a member of DAN, curious if you guys are as well since you dive so often!
I 'll tell you , in my 67 years on this earth , I've had surgical procedures all ove r the world . Some were better than home , none were worse . Doctors around the world really care .
Hey there, thanks for the entertaining tales! I found your channel recently and I'm addicted! I didn't see all the details on the toe treatment, but I suffered from an ingrown toe for many years. If they just cut it out, it will grow back in eventually, and you'll be back to square one. I had heard horror stories about ingrown toenail "surgery", so was very hesitant. I eventually saw a foot and ankle doctor a few years back, and have had zero issues since. He cut a strip down the side that kept getting ingrown, and used some sort of acid at the base to keep that section from ever growing back. I can honestly say there was zero pain involved. He used cold spray before the injection, and the discomfort from that was the worst of it. I was walking on it immediately after with no pain, and after keeping it clean for a few days, have had absolutely no issues or maintenance required to keep it pain free. The whole appointment took me about 15 minutes, and I highly recommend it!
You were brave! I have had 3 this type of surgeries in 80s. And I didn´ t like it at all. Even the 3rd one was bad itself. So you did good-brave! Hope you recover fast!
Your videos and journey are must see vids for my kids and I. I fish sometimes, but really thinking about getting a boat and taking the family out for several months during the summer next year. Keep it up, just love your videos.
Experiences vary, though many are quick to sing the praises of medical care outside of the US. I’m glad those experiences are good! On the other hand, I’ve personally had two ambulance drivers in Paris pull me around a hospital until we found an ATM to pay them in cash before they would treat a coworker, while he laid on a gurney in the hallway unattended. I’ve also been in an ER in Canada and waited for 6 hours just to be triaged. None are all good nor all bad.
When I was in my twenties I used to have to get this done twice a year. Very helpful but very uncomfortable. I leaned to cut my nail correctly and haven’t needed to go to the podiatrist in twenty years.
We experienced the same thing backpacking around the world by planes, trains, ferries with our then 9 and 11 year old kids - good, simple, accessible, affordable healthcare. Here in the US it may be good care if a doctor actually shows up to your appt, but he or she normally just sends the physicians assistant into the exam as substitute (which happens more often than not) and the rest ( insurance and their staff, front end scheduling, billing insurance coordination of doctors offices, et al) is a compete and utter shit show that rivals what could only be equal to what would result if Bernie Maddoff and Lucile Ball teamed up to run a hospital or medical facility. Glad you guys are having fun, the boat looks great.
I had a similar toe problem. Solved by using Oragel toothache lidocaine on the surface of the toe and swollen area as I worked it out. Numbed it right up. Had no pain. Ever since I keep a large supply of surface lidocaine like oragel. All available over the counter. You should stock up the boat. Could probably do stitches and more just with surface lidocaine if you needed to.
OUch, Toe SPur, I gets them summertime. I usually take care of it miself though. A Bit of Anbasol to numb the area and a pointey Tweezers, real needlelike scratchawl and Thread Scissors, pry up the spur, cut and use the awl to checkfor left bits, peroxide douse and it's done. F.W>F>S.
Ingrown toenails was a huge problem for me, I am allergic to antibiotic penacillin, in the end they removed both of my big toenails and cauterized them so they will never grow back.
Solution to prevent this. My late grandfather was a qualified chiropodist. You clip a small "v" shape using small scissors in middle of toenail - important do not clip deep into the nail - it has to be on the part of toenail that is protruding. This ensures growth targets the "v" where this is a gap this preventing ingrown toenails. Used this method all my life and always worked.
I think ice makers are a racket. You get one and then you're hooked. Can't live without it! Then they toy with you and fail quickly. Keith, you are a master of the repair and of patience....I'm assuming here. Extra parts for it because, it will fail again! Love you guys!
A glass filled to the top with ice is a sign of a true Texan. I lived in the Colorado Rockies for 15 years, and in Seattle now, and people not from the south just don't understand the importance of filling a glass to the top with ice. It just makes the drink taste better.
The best dental work I've ever had was outside of the US. I went to Casta Rica for extensive work because to have the same work done here in the states would have cost me 45k-60k based on 3 different estimates I received...and that is with having 2 dental insurance policies (mine and on my wife's policy). In CR I had the work done for 18K and it was the best dental experience I've ever had. Even my regular local dentist here in Oregon commented on the quality of the work I had done and she supported my decision the entire time. I was even able to use my dental insurance in CR due to many insurance companies now realizing that getting work done in foreign countries is a benefit to all parties involved and that the quality is outstanding in most places. You still need to do your research, just as if you were looking for a new local dentist in your home area, but don't be afraid to travel outside of your country to find cheaper yet quality medical care.
It's enlightening to visit foreign countries and see great quality healthcare at affordable prices. Only in the USA can you pay 10 times more for the same thing. Americans don't know what they are missing. However, when advanced care is needed in a foreign country it's good to have a backup insurance plan. Thanks for all the great videos.
I hate the high price of Healthcare in the US. But to be honest, there is nowhere else in the world I'd go for a major major illness than the US. So although I will definitely visit Healthcare in other countries if necessary, you can bet I'll come back to the US if say I have another bout with Cancer.
@@valtracy17, we live in Japan. I worked in healthcare most of my career and I can say that care here is just as good as in the US. And much cheaper. However, people's experiences may vary for sure.
Dental is the same, grossly overpriced in the USA. I traveled to Costa Rica to have extensive dental work done. The experience and outcome was amazing and it cost 1/3 of the price I was quoted in the US. All the dentists were US trained by the way.
I'm actually relieved to hear all your comments. I've not participated in out of the country Healthcare so I will admit that I only know from what I've heard from those I know personally. But not all have the same experience and it sounds like it has gotten better from the last "story" I heard about care out of country (like 12 years ago ) Can I ask any of you if you know whether Cancer treatment is better out of the US? Just in case mine comes back while we are out sailing.
Looks like they did what I had done to mine! I use to 2-3 ingrown toenails on my big toes each year due to football and they cut the toe nail straight on one side. Then they killed that tiny bit of the root. They did it on both toes and I havent got one in going on almost 2 decades. It was so great to never worry about them again.
That toe looks painful! I'm glad you were able to get it fixed. The awkwardly-missed high five on the dinghy cracked me up in Teen Yacht Tuesday and made me laugh again today lol "because we forget which person we're talking to" LOL Truer mom-words were never spoken! My mom has even called me by her sister's name several times in my life haha
Lol sorry Keith. "No intimacy with my husband"... Bahaha. It's the generator/ engine room and Palmala handerson for you big boy! You guys rock! Fin is getting so big! Helping ole pops out!
Soak your foot in warm water for about 30 minutes, then stick wet cotton under the nail. It will take a day or two but this will lift the nail high enough so you can cut it!
I hope your toe nail heals quickly. I had that procedure and everyday I had to soak it in Epson salt solution for like two weeks! Sorry you didn't get the right part Keith, I know how important ice is for your family. 🤗🙏🏻❣️. I'm glad you were able "rig" parts to make the ice maker work for You Keith and Crew!
I really enjoyed bench watching your episodes with my family. I also don’t have any experience sailing ⛵️ but like you it’s what i will do ones I send our last one to college. Thank you for sharing with us! Hello from New Orleans LA.
❤ hopefully you are feeling better now & "if" next time please don't let it get so bad if th Dr puts acid the ingrown toenail will never grow back & it doesn't look bad with the sides or even the entire nail never growing back ❤
Yayyyy Ice!! I am an ice maniac myself so I get this! Man, that toe has to hurt! Yikes, hopefully you got some meds for pain. This episode was too short. LOL. See ya next week!
Glad your Mrs. is feeling better with her toe. Like the lion and mouse story with the thorn. Be well and be safe. Oh and don't forget to get a visa even is the country is closed! Hear the chant from the crowd "Ice Ice Ice...!"
It's really good the toenail treatment was dealt with so efficiently. I also have found medical treatment abroad is good. Costa Rica and Mauritius. Effective and cost effective. Thanks for the big word of the day Keith. "Conundrum". ( Not sure an Aussie would know that one)
So glad to see Keith so happy again. It's amazing what a little ice can do, As I sit in my house bored to death I envy your being stuck in Fiji on a beautiful boat surrounded by the people you love. I don't think life gets any better than that, Rock on, Finn!

A wise old lady on the beach in Costa Rica told me once salt heals all. Soak it in luke warm salt water.
I had two ingrown toenails when I was a teenager. After that I had a pedicure every two weeks. That might be a good job for Keith.

It's funny how Keith turns into Tim the toolman when he realises he can frankenstein the icemaker.
MORE POWER!
asmr ice sound video with keith ...
He should find a big, old honking unit from a restaurant, the kind that makes tubular ice. They're AWESOME. Require TONS of power, though.

Then he waited almost 1/2 hour to actually remove the infected nail area. I never felt a single pain. I was about 14 & now I'm 71, never had that toe act up again.
Glad you show the bad and frustrating times as well as the great fun times, you guys are living the dream but there are still those not great moments!
These kids have the life. They are obviously very mature too. Good on you zatara's.
Nice to see mom is ok.
Hi guys. Hope your foot is ok Renee. Video suggestion: Can you make a video about the actual filming? The cameras, the editing , the drone, Final Cut, color grading etc. a tech centric video
I had this exact procedure done, same foot, same toenail, in Tennessee last year. $373, plus $230 for the office visit.
In Portland, Oregon it would have been $250.00 and no charge for the office visit.
A Toe-tal of $75 is really good!!

Misleading title: I didnt see a foreign doctor anywhere in the video. I did see a foreign patient, getting her toe fixed.
yeah channel turned racist!
@@1littlelee My comment was meant to be tongue in cheek. Sorry you took it the way you did.
I saw him must have been watching a different video
I thought this was about caring for "broads"?
I know you were just joking, but to be fair, there wasn't anything about foreign in the title. Unless they changed the title maybe and I didn't notice? lol
I had bad ingrown toe nails as a kid. Had the nail beds removed in a procedure. The numbing shots were AMAZINGLY PAINFUL. Feeling your pain!
I can’t tell you how many ingrown nails I’ve had over my life, Keith is correct, the lidocaine injections do most of the time hurt more than just pulling it yourself, that’s why I do all mine at home now.
Ice is heavenly.....ICE ICE BABY!!!!
Zatara Mom😜!! Here's wishing you a speedy recovery. 👍👍👍👍
Keith you know just how ask the questions that cause the bureaucrats to run around in circles and then finally settle on practical solutions😎🏁
heh sometimes it's the little things (like ice) that can really make a difference!
I signed up SkillShare about a month ago( thru use guys (Philly) of course). It is a great value. I have been doing so many classes.
Ingenuity at it's finest. See the problem. Adapt with what's at hand. Overcome to achieve success.
Stay cool 🧊my friends.
I 'll tell you , in my 67 years on this earth , I've had surgical procedures all ove r the world . Some were better than home , none were worse . Doctors around the world really care .
Suggestion: A small 3D printer so you can make your own plastic parts. Super handy even for us land lubbers.
Great idea!
And learn to use a CAD program like Autodesk Fusion 360 or Solidworks.
Working on shops and dealing with parts people it's always good to provide numbers and photos when possible
Brian Tracy got me on setting goals. It works I’ll check these guys out.
Finn on the slide.. Turn it up!!! (sorry Renee!!) Nifty fix on the icemaker Skipper, necessity is the mother of invention, great job!!!
Ingrown toenails was a huge problem for me, I am allergic to antibiotic penacillin, in the end they removed both of my big toenails and cauterized them so they will never grow back.
Yeeeeeaaaaahh! Ice is Back! Hey Renee, toe will grow back completely. I had the same procedure...but not $75.
Lol, I just fixed my ice machine last week! Congratulations on the ice fix and the toe! And thank God for TH-cam. 😁👍
They are a pain - I had the repair guy out on Tuesday.
I used to suffer from ingrown toenails. I simply changed the way I cut my nails. The key; don't cut the nails too short!
Keith clever with his comments , wanting to assist the doctor 👨⚕️
Hope your toe is feeling better by now Renee. Loved the video.
@@valtracy17 There's plenty of other options for virtually nothing: Germany, Spain,...
Enjoy sailboat ⛵️ sailing! 😘⛵️😀 Mike from Missouri
OUCH !!! If that toe hurts you can put some ice on it.
Broke the internet with that one.. lol
Bwhahahahahaha 😂😂👍🏽
yelling 💩
Looks like they did what I had done to mine! I use to 2-3 ingrown toenails on my big toes each year due to football and they cut the toe nail straight on one side. Then they killed that tiny bit of the root. They did it on both toes and I havent got one in going on almost 2 decades. It was so great to never worry about them again.
This is so much better than tv.
That was how much it was at our local clinic to remove a large growth that needed to be removed. The hospital wanted 3k here in Minnesota.
I liked the connection with teens Tuesday, nice touch! And I'm glad you didn't sold the boat!😆
Right? lol and I'm so glad she included the awkwardly-missed high five on the dinghy. I may have to watch again lol
Lol sorry Keith. "No intimacy with my husband"... Bahaha. It's the generator/ engine room and Palmala handerson for you big boy! You guys rock! Fin is getting so big! Helping ole pops out!
It’s great having a driver and $$ help his family big time!
How apt. i just had ingrown toenail surgery. I am so with you in this.
One place in the world you want to be stock in ! Great vlog thanks !
Never heard of Skill share - I’ll definitely check it out. Love your videos! 👍
Way to go on the repairs Keith! You are the MAN!
If your inverters are "modified" sinewave and not pure sinewave. The modified sinewaves can be hard on electronics that require alternating current.
You guys are amazing and the production mom, is incredible great job.
It's really good the toenail treatment was dealt with so efficiently. I also have found medical treatment abroad is good. Costa Rica and Mauritius. Effective and cost effective. Thanks for the big word of the day Keith. "Conundrum". ( Not sure an Aussie would know that one)
