He was not the first non Italian pope in the history of the church. Previously to the renaissance there were multiple french, Greek and german popes as well as one English, and a few Spanish. But it is true that John Paul II was the first non Italian in 455 years.

@@peterkozak1291 I also know almost all about the life,the teaching ofJohn Paul II.I`ve read all the books he wrote.He was a great inspiration for many.One of the most beautiful,touching moments was as John Paul II forgive the person(Ali Agca,39 years ago)) who tried to kill him.That is the greatness of the holy man,who was sent to us by God.
