You will feel alienation .Friends and family will interpret your alienation as abandonment.

Thank you for sharing this perspective. It's true that a life at sea can lead to feelings of alienation and it's important to communicate with loved ones about the nature of this work. Any tips on maintaining those connections while away?

Definitely, boot camp is a one-time deal! NEO's got its own vibe - no repeats necessary. Glad you're finding the videos helpful!

I'm currently sailing union but im considering going back to MSC once i get my 3rd A/E license.
If i go back I'll be doing the mixed work schedule.
I enjoyed my time at msc, loved the long port visits, i only left because of the long tours and lack of flexibility.
    Btw, good video!!

Msc is short 129 3rd A/E, so they are far from mix worked schedule. I finished Neo last week.
I'm approved to test for 3rd.

@jukekidBTF Yeah I know they are short, they've been short for awhile, btw that's cool; are you planning on sticking with msc for awhile once you make third engineer or are you planning to go union or non union?

i have a few questions, hopefully you will make another Q&A soon and address them then.
I just got out of the navy last june after 9 years as a QM2, according to the MSC website i qualify to enter as an Operations Chief right off the rip as they only require 6 years as an OS or QM. If i did this could i eventually become a Third Officer? or do i have to be an AB in order to be a Third Officer?
I would be so appreciative if you made a video detailing what it was like/how to become an Ops chief specifically, i remember you saying that’s what you did.
Okay that’s it for now, cheers and
    thanks!

    hey great vid
as a civmar in MSC, would you recommend downsizing your life and home, selling, donating everything and go homesteading?
    (I'm former navy).

    • @thewanderingmariner
      @thewanderingmariner  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Yes, No, Yes. Downsizing is a liberating way to live.... but homes can be a good investments(you might want to keep), Selling unwanted items is always good. Donating if noboady would pay for it and it is a tax write off is a way to save money.
HOMESTEADING aboard any ship is a preferance. Finding the right place you want to stay can be challenging at times. I recommend you wait until you finish your training and complete a sea tour or tour before making any big decisions.

Ive been accepted into SIU and am going through their apprenticeship. Once i complete that, i may consider the MSC. From my research, i understand the different lifestyles. I have an MSC-paced job currently coming from a commercial-paced job. I get it. Hurry up and wait.
What i am looking forward to with SIU is having 4-6 months off each year. Is this possible with MSC? I would not mind working 4-6 months straight if i could have 4-6 months off after.
Based on wanting 4 months off per year in big chunks of time, would you recommend stay union or is it doable with MSC?
Im at the age where i need to commit to one of these for life. Im jumping into the mariner life at 33. So either 20 years gov or 20 years for the SIU pension. Ill have to decide after i get my feet wet with the SIU apprenticeship.

the jobs and economy is actually very good, here's the caveat - when the unemployment rate is low, its harder to find jobs - when its high, competition is increases.
the problem with the civilian job market is recruiting has been outsourced to India - best bet is to apply to federal jobs.
corporate America is addicted to algorithms and AI lol
    great video btw -
