Hey guys, i flew out a mustang the other day, that Hard Mustang that is unforgiving. Not exactly suited to the Meta, needing a trainload of patience, the P-51D-5 can still be a fun plane to fly. I remember getting this plane for the first time, being very nervous because of its reputation… and falling in love at first flight. It just tore BV238s to ribbons. It was fast, it was agile, it was a decent climber, it was beautiful to me
gotta love the memories this game can give you ;)
My recommendation for anyone that wants to fly a Mustang is to just fly Corsairs until you get to the P-51-H. The others are alright but like you said, not meta friendly and the Corsairs are just so much better. With the H model you get screwed by the matchmaker and 288 spam but it's still a more enjoyable experience than being in the strugglebox with one of the early Mustangs.
Fair enough, flying the early mustangs can bring you further as a pilot though. It's a great learning school to make a not meta friendly plane work, it builds patience and character.
@@jengar6258 That's true. They're still viable in other game modes too, I just found them unnecessarily frustrating in Air RB.
The 51 c is pretty damn good. Br for br I think it’s one of the better aircraft
I’d make an exception for the P-51C: its instructor is MUCH friendlier than the one on the D models, so it’s actually very responsive. The low firepower isn’t actually a huge problem due to how potent APIT rounds are when hitting anything vaguely expensive like engines or fuel tanks
The D models SHOULD be more or less direct QoL upgrades, with better firepower and visibility in exchange for being a bit heavier, but visibility means nothing in WT, and the instructor is stupidly wobbly
It’s a shame the best D model for BR, the D-10, is Season locked. Same BR as D-5, an extra 150Hp or so

Imagine the Bf-109.
What does the Bf-109 do?
Climb High, fast, and before the match gets to go anywhere, you can dictate it, and absolutely turn it into a meat grinder.
The P-51 instead either needs time to get high enough to dictate the fight, but by that point the match has been decided, and if you're not dead, the enemy team most likely is, or your team is, and you'll be swarmed. This plane flies silky smooth, it's much nicer than the Merlin Spitfire's immediate energy burning, or the Bf-109's wacky turning, where you're either too slow, or get locked up.
And for that, this plane does not get the only thing it needs. Altitude.
This plane is the equalient of buying a top quality steak for your vegetarian friend.
This is one of those planes that would benefit from a Realistic Enduring Confrontations game mode.
One of the reasons I got into war thunder was for the p51. After a year of playing I had it. Only to find out that the d5 was a brick and then had to get the d30.
Honestly the D5 was a brick wall, though now after being pretty fluent with all the other Mustangs, I might give it a try, at the least to get it spaded n all

You have to be in the right mindset to plat this game and do well. Survivability and patience are key.
first video i have watched from you. liked and subbed. i am so excited to get this plane because a p51d landed at my local small airport and i got to hang out with it at midnight alone, just me and that beautiful ace. she had 7 german kills according to the swastikas on the side, and looks just like the one in the game, invasion stripes and all. i appreciate your focus on history, and not just tiny technical details that ultimately are all rubbish and don’t make for a fun game. what makes the game fun, for me anyways, is learning the history of the plane or tank im in, and hopefully seeing it in person someday, and thinking (i have killed/flown that in game before!)

seen a few of these in cas games, when I'm playing GRB 3.7-4.7 i play the 3.3 mustangs you know the one with the 4x 20mm Hispanos no bombs, and BnZ Attackers, and easily pick up an ace with distracted tunnel visioned players over the battlefield very very fun.

I realize that Europeans have a different perspective on the conduct of WWII. However, I have to take exception to the notion that America was slow in getting into the war. A couple of things seldom mentioned any more are just how much the Soviets contributed to the German military buildup prior to the war and their cooperation once the invasion of Poland began. If the Soviets suffered at the hands of the Nazis for a few years, it was suffering of their own making. There’s also the consideration of proximity. At the beginning of Operation Barbarossa the Soviets and Germans were only separated by a few kilometers in Poland. The US had to cross the Atlantic with everything required to wage war despite a German navy determined to prevent exactly that. Also worth mentioning is the fact that a significant portion of the raw and finished materials used by the Soviets and other allies were provided by the US at a time when we were fighting 2nd war, virtually alone, in the Pacific. Through all of this we prioritized the liberation of Europe over the defeat of Japan and held our forces back at the very end to allow the Soviets to take Berlin when we could have taken it several weeks earlier. No hard feelings, but we have a perspective too.
As far as the P51 goes, this is the one I did best with in War Thunder, though I haven’t played much Air RB in the past few years.
i didnt try to diminish anyones role in ww2. What i notice though is that trough the cold war propaganda in the west, the role of the soviets in the eventual demise of the Nazi's has been greatly diminished. Which isnt fair. The soviets broke the back of the Nazi war machine on the field in 42/43. Way before anyone else had really begun to touch the german army. That's all, for the rest all the allied nations were hero's in that war. The last war in which the US were the hero's btw.
@@jengar6258 I don’t think it’s fair to call history propaganda. Patton landed in North Africa in November 1942, less than a year after Pearl Harbor. That army defeated Rommel’s Afrika Corps by March 1943. The Soviets didn’t break the back of the Nazi war machine. The Russian winter did that. The Soviets were only able to rally after Stalingrad because Hitler didn’t learn from Napoleon and because of pressure applied by the US and GB rolling into Europe via Italy. That’s not even considering the loss of resources to the Nazis in North Africa. To be sure, the Soviets played their part, but that part was made necessary by their own treachery and their victory was only possible because of the sacrifices of other nations.

@@jengar6258 please don’t think that anything I say carries any animosity. It doesn’t. But the facts are what they are and history doesn’t need to be interpreted. Especially not recent history. We know precisely what happened from the end of the 1st World War right through to the end of WWII. It’s only very recently that the “interpretations” of this time period have been changed to attempt to rehabilitate the conduct of the Soviet Union and its contribution to the war effort. No one disputes that the Soviets suffered greatly. What has been forgotten is the self inflicted nature of the suffering and and the suffering of those who were drawn into the conflict by the treachery of the Soviets.
@@CuttinEJ Rommels Afrika corps was defeated by the british long before patton had anything to do with it, patton just cleared up the remnants of the afrika corps. It was defeated by the brits because of supply issues due to malta being a pain in the ass for supply ships. The failure by the axis to take malta will long hunt them. Your claim that russia didnt break the nazi's on the field is hilarious. The vast majority of German casualties were suffered on the Eastern Front. Yes, the soviets wernt angels with taking eastern poland in 39, or the finnish conflict, but by god man, how can you diminish the Soviet achievement against the Nazi's so much. Does the american nation need to diminish others to appreciate its own role? you invaded italy only in september of 43. The Battle of kursk, 5th july 43-23rd august 43 (the largest battle in history, 3 mil men, 10.000 tanks, 8.000 planes) was fought and decided by the time USA invaded italy. After Kursk the Germans were definitively broken. They were on the defensive after that. Never able to mount any more offensives (apart from the desastrous ardenne offensive, which just sealed their faith). These are the facts, That is History. The Soviets did that, paid in blood (27 milion dead). And they redeemed their earlier mistakes with that. The USA has no comprehension of that sort of loss of life.

I remember getting this in 2013 this plane was my ultimate goal when downloading War Thunder crazy how much has changed since I stopped playing in 2016 and recently logged back in.
Thats quite the break Jason ;) and yeah, lots of changes, many wrong choices as well from gaijin. Like the 25 min matches.
@@jengar6258 Yeah it's taken a while to get use to new mechanics. I got jets for USA and Germany before I stopped and i've given up on getting tier 6+ given the grind.

I love the D-5, I think it’s a classic. I used to be pretty crap with it and understand the frustration but I think patience and calculation pays off.

I am used to meta-unfriendly planes, so I will take the challenge soon. For now, I am very content with my B-17G.

American Tree Mustang review by me (idk I’m bored and love these planes):
P-51/Cannonstang: easily my favourite mustang if not for the 51H, really fun diving on people with those one tap hispanos and a great overall plane, turn speed isn’t exactly good however.
P-51C: BnZ first, a good all-rounder second. can hold up with a lot of planes in a bit of everything except turn fights. exceptional dog fighter, heavy plane allows you to drop speed quick and move behind players with the insane engine power you have barely pulling you near stall speeds.
P-51D: near strict BnZ due to the META at this BR. Also the BR where most people play (except toptier). Not exactly enjoyable.
P-51H: ENGINE GO BRRRRRRRRRRR. But seriously, all the problems of previous mustangs go away just because this thing has the engine of the Apollo V Saturn rocket, pulls energy out of its ass, turns really well above 500, amazing BnZ, amazing energy-fighter, still meh turn-fighter but if you have the energy, you still can turn fight somewhat till it turns into a stall fight. Easily the funnest P-51 (and one of the reasons I played this game)
agreed on most stuff, except the exceptional dogfighter definition on the C-10. It's better then the others, but its a farcry from exceptional ;)
p51h is a good turnfighter but still try not to get involved too much against spits and 152s. plane is fun but 6.3 isnt
The only thing i can say, it's that i recommend getting the ammo belts, then all the performance enhancement modifications, it makes her a lot easier and funner to play (I'm still grinding these ones, they make for a significantly better experience overall)
The p51 mustangs are all about Boom and Zoom = climb to high altitude and dive onto the enemy plane, you hit or no, you must run-climbe again to restore your speed (altitude), because if you turn fight you will usually die immediately as a beginner like me. This advice is from a nooby:)) to others.

American fighter planes are energy fighters. You never go for a dogfight with this machines. So yes, it is how you said. Dive, shoot, and climb back to a high level of altitude. They have strong engines to climb faster than your opponents.
One thing I think that makes planes like the mustangs worse in comparison to the 'good old days' of War Thunder, is that Japanese planes in particular have gotten better at climbing, can keep up in dives, and put out fires.
thats one part, but for me, the bigger part is the 25:00 timer. It almost doesnt allow the mustang the time to get where it needs to be to influence the match as it can.

@@comediangj4955 correct, 60 minutes it was. most matches lasted less then 30 minutes, but there was potential room for epic reversal matches where you had the time in all planes to win a 1 vs 9 or somthing linke that. Epic matches. Those days are gone with the 25 min timer.
It was the plane I grinded for and second plane I took into realistic and stopped playing arcade. Man I just love P51s. Back when you only faced axis powers, one of the best starts for D5 was climbing no higher then 3k m and going fast, distracting enemies and using speed and those two great turns to mess with them. It unfortunately no longer works all that great, but I remember getting my first ace like that. What a machine

I’ve had some amazing games with this plane. Great support for sure she can turn very well and hold energy in a turn fight down to the the very bottom, always pitching slightly down on turns in high altitude to avoid more maneuverable planes when caught at a disadvantage; but when you survive the onslaught and you catch them in that stall fight area you prevail!

Me too. Because we have wrong expectation of it and we play it wrong. Specially the noobies like us: in the moment we make turn fighting with it we are basically taking the enemy bait.

@@jengar6258 I have learned that. Many years ago I played World of Tanks (before it burned me out) and in one of my early matches I was called away for the first five minutes of the match. When I came back everyone was half dead so it was easy for me to clean up. More recently I have learned that about one in 5 War thunder matches include at least one idiot team killer so I now spawn in late and take off last - that way no one can sneak up on me and ram me or gun me out of the sky just after take off.

I just started playing WT again after a 5ish year hiatus. One of the things that surprised me was no more 45 min matches
it used to be 60 min matches, but yeah, you're right. They took away those gems by changing the matchtime to 25 min.

I have never understood people who try to take this plane off and straight climb. Take off, make an immediate left or right loop back over the airstrip and you are essentially starting from the same place but 500+ feet higher than you took off at. Same with bombers, why dive or fly straight on with interceptors when you can loiter and wait for your escorts with AAA coverage. idk, just seems like the more common sense approach.
instant gratification is what more ppl want, you dont get that in this plane ;) takes patience.

Hey Jengar, any chance you could review the Spitfire F mkXIV (the early griffon one). I haven't seen anyone properly review it, and it is honestly one of the most underrated planes

Today I just discovered that I could dogfight an Israeli spitfire with an la5 w/ some proper flaps control and that a release cuz for a long time thought that you could only kill theme energy traps or boom n zoom
the only thing left is trying to get it LOL

@@jengar6258 unfortunately not yet, even after 85 hours of US aviation playtime, ive decided to move into bombers instead. i might consider reaching back out to grind for the mustang, but ive grown to really enjoy bombers. thanks for checking up, though!

I must have imagined how great it was back in the older patches of war thunder before the flight model was Changed and that hurt 😢 the d-5 mustang pretty badly and the current meta change makes it to the point that there’s no spot light for this plane and I want war thunder to realize something’s and good luck janger with the d-30 mustang

Not related to the video but, I'm having a dilemma in which premium should I buy between the Ki-96 and the XP-50 since from what I was seeing, both of them are performing quite similarly.
their both good, but the best is the xp-50.
I find myself always lacking speed/energy when using this plane. I always get jumped going for a dive going around 400kmh and I'm not fast enough to outrun the interceptors. I don't do any weird maneuvers on my boom and zooms, but I seem to always be in a lack of speed. I tried correcting for it by gaining more altitude, but then I found myself going so fast that my wings would break, seems like a middle point is impossible to find, especially when you can't control the plane's speed with such a weak engine. Any tips on evading attackers while still being a relevant threat to the enemy? (altitude seems to matter more than the engine itself.)
well this is good info there are times where you can't escape a dog fight for example you have a faster more maneuverable and higher caliber plane chasing you for example a Bf 109 and he's shooting at you if you don't do anything you're gonna die so all you can really do is try and fight even though it's most likely you won't win so if you want to dogfight P-51's your chances are higher in simulator battles but don't use mouse control unless you're gonna be using a bomber and I prefer you get some kind of steam Compatible VR headset otherwise you're gonna have to bind some controls to look around the cockpit and that makes it very easy to lose your target
gotta keep her fast, in a extended dogfight you'll get worst the slower you'll get.
@@jengar6258 I under stand that but (my personal experience) the P-51 is a good climber but not the best and so when enemies that have climbed higher than you will engage you and so you pretty much have no choice but to engage or run which either way you won't win

Your great-grandfather flew a mustang, mine first flew an IAR-80, then switched to a Bf-109 G2. Maybe that's why I don't understand how to play on this plane? Messerschmitt has always been closer to me.
Like bf109 is superior to p51 in almost every way, except maybe performance over 5500 metres
@@Arthur_Neves Yep, that's right, but mustang's dominance over Bf-109 at 5500 and higher is presented in more superior speed and that's all. Mustang isn't bad, but it climb performance makes that fighter very painful to fly. My favorite mustang in the game is C-10 because it has very decent rate of climb and it can turn-fight. It is one of the best mustangs, by my opposition.

Japan took maneuverability, where the USA lost with Hellcats and Wildcats, so the Americans switched to speed.The Japanese took with maneuverability, the USA takes with speed. In this war, everyone tried to make weapons that would surpass the enemy's weapons. For example, the most effective weapons against Germany were created by the USSR and Britain because they fought directly with Germany and the United States directly fought with Japan and based on this war they created a doctrine designed for speed. The Germans fought with everyone at once, which is why their weapons were average and suitable for fighting against the British and the Soviets. The United States simply was not ready for methods of fighting Germany and their doctrine remained fixed until September 2, 1945. American weapons are not bad or even excellent, but only for the conditions for which they were created.

It sucks that this plane is horrible in this game! It compression locks at like 300mph and it turns like a brick. Not to mention literally EVERYTHING you fight at this BR outguns you, out turns you, out speeds you, and out climbs you. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLANE!

A woefully misinformed assessment of the Second World War to think that the USSR won the war and the Western Allies helped. Not so.
It not that much misconceptions though. A survey few years after the war by French shown that majority think Soviet plays very crucial role in winning the war. Although another survey made 10 years or so after the original survey had different answers that was closer to general view (probably from communist and Soviet supporting Vietminh in Indochina).
everybody helped, but in the pacific the US broke the japanese, and ussr did close to nothing. In europe the USSR broke the germans, and the US helped. US did way more in europe then ussr did in the pacific, but still, it was a supporting role. With smaller conflicts and smaller scale battles. The best of the wehrmacht were killed on the eastern front. For me in Europe, the war could not have been won without the eastern front. No other nation would have taken those casualties to break the back of the german army.
