  • Highlights of the Mighty Moataa 7s Team that dominated Sevens Rugby in Samoa in the late '80s and early '90s. Lolani Koko, Captain of Moata'a was at his best, and was unstoppable, and was rewarded with the Player of the Tournament at the 1993 Marist Samoa International 7s Tournament, Moata'a's third consecutive Cup Victory, it's fifth Cup Wins from six Cup finals in a row. Koko turned down his selection for the NZ 7s Team, and turned out helping Samoa winning the famous Hong Kong 7s for the first time ever. Koko also won the Player of the Tournament in Hong Kong that same year. These Moata'a Highlights would show why Lolani Koko, To'o Vaega, Junior Paramore, Danny Kaleopa, Anetelea Aiolupo, Alefaio Vaisuai, Michael Jones, Solomona Sua, and Filipo Saena were household names of 7s in Samoa. Majority of this Team plus four players from other clubs, went on to win the Canberra 7s, and the Hong Kong 7s for Samoa two weekends in a row.

I remember this game. I listened to it on the Radio. I think Graham Eden was the announcer. I was living in Korovou Tailevu just two weeks prior to going back to Samoa. Jovesa Vosanibola, Lemeki Koroi, Josateki Savou and Filipe Tawayaga were all in this Prison Team. They beat Nabua in Fiji to earn the rights to go represent Fiji in Samoa. I remember they were interviewed when they got back and they said that the level of 7s skills in the Moataa team was very high. Fiji had won Cathay Pacific HK 7s three years in a row 90, 91, 92 and 93 and they were favorites to win again. Samoa of course beat Fiji in the Hong Kong Finals that year to win for the first time ever. And yes that Moataa team was very special, full of legends. Though I love my Manu I have a lot of love for my Fijian brothers. I never drank so much grog in life until I lived in Fiji LOL. I miss the laga sere and gunu yaqona till the next morning.

Man, that Moata’a team was loaded with stars, it could have been Samoa’s national team. No fair. Lol. I had no idea Junior Paramore had a connection with Moata’a. All I heard was he had family ties in Sale’imoa. Too bad Samoa hardly produces club teams like this Moata’a team. Marist was another powerhouse back in the day that rivaled Moata’a.
