I find your channel so relaxing! Thanks for your video's. If you don't like the trip around the world look, I like the idea of putting orphan blocks in between, but I would also do sashing between the squares-blocks and the orphan blocks, to give the eye a place to rest. Instead of orphan blocks, I think flying geese units would look nice too. Anyway, love to hear what you end up doing!

Oh, I was so hoping you were going to show us how you actually hand quilt. But I learned how to use my QSnap frames, and that it doesn’t have to be so taught as I thought it did. You learn something new every day. That line-drawn cats fabric, I bought some of that online 😻! I love the back of your blue-and-white vintage quilt, especially the four-patches scattered throughout. I love the large pieced blocks together like a diamond , as you’ve shown at 26:26 in ur video. And hv orphan blocks around the diamond and maybe the remaining large pieced blocks at each corner of your quilt, with orphan and fabric to fill ur quilt to size 💖
Sue ur amazing, I haven’t been in my sewing corner for months (February actually) how do you time manage ur play (sewing 🥹💖) with household chores.
🙏🏼 thank you for inspiring me to just play 🥹👋

Honestly, I balance sewing and chores by doing as few chores as possible! I would love to have a spotless house, but unfortunately I have always hated cleaning. I almost always start my morning with a few hours of quilting and a cup of tea, and spend afternoons working up in my sewing room. These days, I'm losing a lot of time to my cat--- he is young and wants me to play with him for hours, so I have to set boundaries there!

Hello! Your 2nd layout, with the blues coming toward the center, gives a trip around the world type block, which I have always liked. In your first layout, where you thought of using orphan blocks in between, made me want to use a plain or neutral in between,,.just a thought. You make beautiful things, and I'm sure whatever you decide in the end will be great. I am enjoying your videos so much! Mavis

I like the idea of the scrappy around the world quilt too....but when you had the four big blocks together, I saw that repeating through the quilt so you had diamonds with the blue centres and the red zigzagging through...I think it could be such a fun scrappy quilt whichever way you decide to go ❤

With your “Trip Around the world’ blocks, I like them. Either way you laid the out would look cool. (Maybe you count make a couple with green [or blue, or pink…] going diagonally through the centre and see how that looks together with opposing red diagonal ones? Just a random thought 💭. I would definitely keep going though, love their look!

Good morning Sue this is Marion Jay and I just wanted to introduce myself. I’m 92 years old next week that was 27th of November and so I can’t do very much but I love fabrics. I spend a lot of money buying that cord and things I just love to look at them and I do make a few things. My bags are pretty but far from being perfect, but I don’t mind, I’ve already had my perfect days. I was a mess of embroidery for hand. I made Irish stand stressless for seven years and they really did a lot of damage to my eyes so I have Mac generation and can’t do it anymore but I have a lot of fun and I find you work very interesting. I never dreamed of buying men’s shirts to cut up, but it would even be fun to do And that I love buttons too, so yeah, I’ve found your work and I want you to know that I’m not a good creator of the quilt however I do make little ones and then not perfect either but I do a lot of Jack and Jill not Jack and Jill but Raggedy Ann and stuff and Barbie and I love it so thank you so much and I, yeah I just signed up to your channel and we’ll see where it goes. Thank you so much.

Happy birthday!! It sounds like you've had an interesting sewing history, and tried many things that I've never attempted. I'm glad you're still making things, and being creative. I hope you know my work isn't perfect, either! I'm glad you're joining me in my little sewing room.

My opinion on your quilt blocks: I saw enough contrast in color and value for the pattern to be instantly seen. On screen the colors looked great. I would put the blocks together like you show at the end and finish it for sure! But you see it in person and if your heart doesn’t sing… could you make a few more blocks and then decide? I hope you continue. Loved the video! Your camera person is doing a great job!

Keep going with the rainbow. Those can be fun with the final arranging. Also a sum of its parts, by the end the totality will shine so you don't see the individual bits that bug you. (Like when you rescue vintage blocks...) Worst case scenario - it can be a nice donation quilt or quilt top.

Your scrappy blocks at the end of the video are like a pattern from Bonnie Hunter, that she calls scrappy trips. Because you have red squares running diagonally, the whole pattern will look nice, in my opinion, when it’s complete. I did one like this where my middle diagonals were navy and dark gray. Hope that helps!

    • @fromsmallthings509

I have made that block the Bonnie Hunter way several times. It is fun and easy! But this time I need to clear out my scrap drawer filled with 2.5" squares so her method won't work for this since I am beginning with individual squares.

The scrappy blocks laide with the blue in the center reminds me of a trip around the worrld.. They look lovely. You could make a medallion quilt with those four in the middle, then different blocks in borders around it. make 1 more block and put the four in the corners of the quilt. Thanks for sharing

I really like the whole quilt version you laid out at the end - it made me think of a summer picnic for some reason and that made me smile:) Thinking on it, the reds and blues reminded me of the blue jeans and red bandanas of my teenage summers:) Beautiful flying geese quilt. Loving how you use your scraps. I subscribed hoping to eventually see those $1.50 scrap bag scraps in various quits as you make them.

My name is Sue, too, and I'm from northwestern Pennsylvania 🙂 I haven't been quilting as long as you have, but my Mom loved color and fabric and quilting, so I've been surrounded by it all my life (40 years). I also hand quilt and make scrappy quilts. I had to be creative because I couldn't afford to buy new fabric (well, my fabric is usually "new" as in never used before). I have since made a quilt using a current fabric collection and found it rather boring 🤭 even though it was beautiful fabric.
