From Small Things: Episode 8: A Red and White Sampler

  • Welcome back!
    This week, I thought I'd share a bit of my hand quilting process. I talk about it in the beginning, and there is also a minute at the very end for anyone who wants a longer look at the quilting motion. This time I am hand quilting a crosshatch pattern on a snowball quilt; I use four needles at a time, on a Q-snap frame, using Coats & Clark thread.
    A few small things I've been working on this week include crocheted lace and preparing a yo-yo orphan block for use in a future quilt.
    There are a few acquisitions this week: a jar to keep dog ears in, and a box of ties!
    I have a finished quilt to share also. It is a red and white sampler quilt with sashing and cornerstones, hand quilted with the baptist fan motif. It includes blocks made with several different techniques in addition to machine piecing, including embroidery, paper piecing, applique, and some orphan blocks. The back features a Carpenter's Wheel, and I absolutely love how it turned out! (Thank you, Color Grabbers!)
    Finally, my orphan block quilt top is all pieced, and ready for basting.

    I absolutely love seeing your videos pop up in my feed. You inspire me so much. You are so relatable. No fancy craft rooms, no fancy fabrics or equipment. You are what so many of us woman are. When watching other TH-camrs, we feel we need all the bells and whistles, and in turn, fear and doubt sets in. You use affordable materials, your down to earth, you have fun, and enjoy every stitch. You truly are a joy to watch. Thank you so much for sharing!

      I know just what you mean. I started out trying not to spend much money on quilting, because I couldn't afford to. To some degree, that's still the case! But now I no longer envy the special fabric lines and top of the line equipment, because I know I can work with what I have and love how it turns out. It took some time to be able to say, "you know what, I like what I'm making, and that's what matters," but I'm so happy to be there now!

    I actually gasped out loud when I saw the back of the red and white quilt. The whole quilt is just lovely. I only hope I can make something as beautiful as that someday.

      That is the biggest pieced back I have ever made, but it went together SO fast! It's just squares and HST's. I had everything cut in a few hours. But the front took me a little longer to put together, haha!

    The red and white quilt is stunning and one of the few sampler quilts I’ve really taken to. It’s inspired me to consider a sampler quilt as one of the first quilt projects to learn on. I think the sashimi and corner stones help in letting each block shine but also add rhythm to the whole piece. Thank you.

      Red and white quilts are some of my favorite. I decided years ago to make a small collection of them for myself. With this quilt, I picked out some blocks that could all finish at the same size, and I just made one or two a day until there were enough. It can be a bit-by-bit project. That being said, retirement absolutely allows for more quilting time!

    Good morning, Sue! Your red and white sampler is gorgeous!!!! I just discovered you a few days ago. Not only do I really enjoy your content, but you remind me so much of both of my grandmothers, both of whom have been gone for several years now.
    I can attest to the red spot on your forehead from the headlamp! I wear one to milk my goats and cows with, then take my daughter to school. I have had to go help with so many morning school functions with a red spot on my forehead 🤦‍♀️

      Hello! Yes, hand quilting seems to have receded a bit in past years, but I'm glad to hear through my channel that there are still people out there working on it. I wonder if hand quilting is about to have a comeback, because of the big stitching or slow stitching trends. That being said, machine quilting can be very beautiful! And I understand the desire to finish a quilt quicker, because there are always more things we want to start working on. You could always give hand quilting a try on something small, just to see how you like it!

    What a delightful channel you have. You do a little bit of Sew long and you’re very knowledgeable. You gave several wonderful Tips. I have used color catchers, but didn’t use as many as you did and that was an excellent tip to pin them to the Quilt in spot you thought may bleed, as well as Thornton extras. I’ve always only use three or four, but I always always pre-washed on my fabrics until they quit bleeding. I learned a little bit of your Hand quilting, technique, and your design talent is incredible. You are from blocks look wonderful set together and that red and white is Over the top beautiful. This is the first time I see your channel. Red is my favorite color and your red and white quilt is beautiful. I truly believe in the color catcher sheets. I usually add a small box to every quilt I donate with a small message. I have only pre washed my fabrics when I did my first quilt over 15 years ago. I have washed my own personal quilt and they come out nicely. I haven’t received any complaints about bleeding or distortion from the unwashed fabrics I use.

      As with most things, practice makes perfect! I've been quilting for 33 years, and there are people whose stitches are far neater and closer than mine. But for me, the most important thing is enjoying the process. Keep going, and enjoy yourself!

    Apologies in advance for the long comment: So much eye candy in this one! Loved seeing you hand quilting. I've only done it for three projects (a wall hanging and two mini quilts) out of the many I've made. I have a "bucket list" queen size wholecloth project basted but admit I haven't gotten very far on it since I set it up two years ago.
    As someone else commented, boy you quilt fast! I bet that's because you do it a lot and so you have put in the hours to become very proficient at it. A lesson for us all.
    I was surprised to hear that Thread Magic was once so cheap! I do remember buying it at a cheaper price than I've had to pay recently when I started needing to stock more of it since I started cross stitching. However, never for as chaep as you used to get it!! From now on I'm keeping an eagle eye out for sales of it!
    Lastly like others have commented, I love, love, love the red and white sampler! Then you went further and made it "two sided" with a Capenter's Wheel Star on the "back", Bravo!
    Having made a bunch of red and white quilts for Christmas decorating a couple of years ago I thought I was done but looking at your sampler, I think I might have to pull out the scraps I have left over, go find some vintage blocks, make a couple of embroideries and think about doing the same, LOL!!
    Have you ever considered submitting that for display in a show? You'd ribbon for sure!!

    • @fromsmallthings509
      @fromsmallthings509  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The "problem" with crafting is that we get new ideas faster than we can finish the old ones! In the long run, that's probably a good thing, there's always something to work on. I'm sure you'll come back to the wholecloth quilt-- big projects are most intimidating at the start, but making a bit of progress is reinvigorating.
      I'm glad to hear you want to make a red and white quilt, also-- they are always beautiful! I've never entered anything into a show-- and I made an error on this one, which would be noticed in a show, but it works just fine for my bed.

    • @vivianburrus8085
      @vivianburrus8085 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@fromsmallthings509 Yes, I'll eventually get back to the wholecloth. You are right, it seems way more daunting when I only have a little of it done. Maybe I'll make that a project for the cold, gray winter days.
      Regarding entering the RW Sampler into a show: it doesn't have to be a judged show where they critique your work. I'm sure a lot of quilters (and even non-quilters) would enjoy seeing this piece just displayed in a local show. The variety and significance of the block sources you used, the hand quilting and the overall look and inspiration it provides would thrill many. Any "mistakes" make it more human like the beautiful vintage quilts we see in museums.

    Hello! I just found you on YT and I loved this episode! It is packed with so much information and your sampler is just stunning. I am in love with it. I have been quilting for years but mostly machine piecing and quilting. In 2020 I did my first hand pieced and hand quilted quilt and I fell in love with the process and the results. I still do a lot by machine, but love spending time on hand work for the important pieces. I'm looking forward to learning from you in future videos. Thank you from Cleveland, Ohio 💖 Kim

      That's wonderful! I do almost all my piecing by machine, I will start doing some hand piecing once in awhile, when I'm in the mood. But the hand piecing on old quilts and orphan blocks absolutely blows me away-- how some people can be SO precise and do such delicate work just amazes me. Thank you for joining me!

    Another wonderful video Sue. I would dearly love to see how you hand quilt. I have hand quilted for many years but it is so laborious and sllooowww. Your speed is just remarkable. I am also grateful to you for showing us how you prepare and store men’s shirts. I have a lot but stored the pieces flat so I couldn’t see them and they never got used. Now they are nicely folded into visible packets ready to go. I just love your scrap content. Thank you so much. Laima from Canada

      One of the things I like about hand quilting is that it is slow. It's a time for me to relax, and that's how I start every single day. If I don't have a needle in my hand, I don't know what to do with myself. I'm glad you've got your shirts reorganized and ready to go!

    I have always had making a red and white quilt on my to make list. I’m a fairly new quilter and most of my quilts so far have been made for my family. Most of them were queen or king size. So, now that those 13 are done I can make the red and white one for myself. The amount of quilting making you accomplish is so amazing to me. It makes me wonder if there are more than 24 hours in a day in Pennsylvania 😊.

I love your Red quilt sampler quilt, I love ON POINT quilts they are my favorite. It is BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you I learn so much from every video.

    • @fromsmallthings509
      @fromsmallthings509  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's absolutely better late than never! They say there are "project people" and "process people." Meaning some people find the highest value in having a completed quilt, and some value the process of quilting the most. I'm a "process" person; once I finish a quilt, I don't really think about it anymore. If you're the same type, it doesn't matter how late you start, each day that you get to sew will be fulfillng in itself. (AND you'll have finished projects!)
      I love quilts set on point, also, but I still make mistakes setting them up more often than I should! They can be tricky for me.

    Hi, Sue, I’m new to your channel and am very impressed with the scrappy beauty of your designs. I would love to see what your hand under the quilt is doing while you take those fast, tiny stitches. My 82 year old eyes and fingers find big stitch Kantha type quilting works best for me. Thanks for sharing and that red sampler quilt is stunning - both sides.

      Thank you so much! I've always wanted to try Kantha quilting. I'm a self-taught quilter, so I've just developed a rythm that works for me. The hand under the quilt feels for the needle to come through, and provides some tension in the fabric.
