  • My experience of running the Trans Gran Canaria Classic Race, starting at midnight on my 28th birthday (25 February 2023), across the beautiful island of Gran Canaria. 128km with 6500-7000m of gain and descent (official course and gps devices vary).
The race in hindsight was absolutely awesome, but in the moment was very difficult, especially mentally, after the significant downhill destroyed my legs. I had some very low moments mentally, but luckily I called my brother and he helped talk me out of those moments, so if it wasn't for him, not sure I would have finished (I will never know).
But I got there in the end, and cannot be more stoked! On to the next one!

Congrats, great performance and a very nice video! I did the 84km and was thinking during the race how painful must be the long race. Respect.

AAA i also loved the comment after el hornillo. That part to the valley was most downhill but was the slowest part in the whole race for me. Really really hard (edit. obviously the climb from tejeda to rogue nublo was the slowest especially since i got somekinda heatstroke and thought im lost in track)

Downhill hill killed my legs. Felt like a stick going down each step, I was so stiff 😅

You mentioned the equipment at the start. Perhaps they werent participatin 2022 version of the race where it got so god damn cold that half of the people dropped at artenara near hypothermic. I totally carried extra clothing this year.

Forecast did call for terrible weather but it ended up not being bad, which was lucky for us this year.

Hi Arthur, thx for your video :-) I was looking for the 2023 classic and you've done a great job, running and editing ! I'm on the TGC classic 2024, any advice ? There seems to be full of things to eat at each pit stop, that is nice. Wonderful island.

Mainly I'd say just try to get a lot of downhill training into your legs. Otherwise I hear weather can vary considerably from year to year, so keep an eye on that! The aid stations were all very well stocked. Good luck!

Well done. What's it like going into the night at the start (compared to starting early morning)? Do you feel sleepy from the start and then sleepy the next day too? Great video and thanks for sharing

Hi Kris! Was my first night start for a race, so my strategy was to wake up very early on the day, then take a long nap mid day to early evening. Of course I didn't end up sleeping that well as I was nervous, but I felt quite ok energy wise throughout the race and afterwards. I took in alot of caffeine thoughout which helped I think.
I think the good point of the night start was it helps set the energy tone for the race. As it was dark, it helped keep me from going out too fast as I had to watch where I was going once we got into the trails. Then once the sun started coming up like 6-7 hours into the race, it gave such a good mental boost and helped propel me into the next phase of the race.
