I also kinda blame @sawmanUK recent video on the problems with Ashes of Creation for causing to me to make this. Because watching his video I just realised I see so many problems with the whole genre. So any angry comments can be directed at him. Keep it civil boys.

I used to love mmorpg before my 20s till all of them turned P2W. Now I just enjoy open craft survival games. And recently I’ve found an increase of players in this type of genre.

MMORPGS are just bad games as a base. Online features mean less and less but they cost those games all of the basic game elements. Bad movement, bad engine, bad combat and everything sacrificed for online elements... which are pointless. I tried playing a few mmos in the past and I realised that instead of sitting in one place and exping with a bad gameplay I should just play Diablo 2 or anything with a good gameplay.

Yeah, I think that's true in 2024. In 1999 the idea of playing in an online world blew my goddamn mind. It's just kinda out lived its welcome. And people want back what they can't have.

@@oldmanbanjo Exactly. Some simple social interactions with the mmos I played were more fun than the basic gameplay. To this day I remember when I was showing someone how to go somewhere in a game and it was cooler than grinding and exping.
The online aspect doesn't matter anymore for people but prevents a better engine and gameplay.

I missed out on the early MMOs as I was dirt poor (and still a teen). Got into WoW during the open beta and played for years.
Haven't touched it in over a decade. Grind isn't my idea of a good time, neither is gear score. Neither are elitists that eat, drink, breathe and live a game. If you're trying to give me a schedule of 'play', it stops being play and becomes work. And you'd better pay me for that.
EDIT: Decades to over a decade - it's been more then 10, less than 20 so ...

Some of the old ones are still worth getting into as 'chill games'. Old school runescape is good with a cup of tea in the evenings. Ultima Outlands is totally free a bit more intense but a nice game. Everquest can be chill, but you need friends: something I've been trying to put together on this channel for ages, and never get around it.

I'll happily play vanilla WoW until I die

Gaming since the Mid 80's. MMO's (successors of the MUDs I fell in love with as a teen) were the best. But even I can't anymore.

For me the only motivation at this point can be nostalgia and the community.

No king rules forever....but seriously I hope people don't take the content creation section the wrong way. I'm just trying to be real about how it works - I've got big respect for people that manage to make it in the mmorpg content creation space.

It wouldn't be so bad if the replacement was more obvious. Personally, I still want most of the sociability, character customization, and challenging group content of a MMO, I just can't vibe with the build metas, rotations, and community emphasis on efficiency over all else. So I should play... Umm... Maybe MonHun Wilds when it releases?
Also, there is a third type of MMO content but it is highly dependent on the game itself having good systems: Challenge videos. OSRS has some crazy ones and I get some enjoyment from the odds and ends in other MMOs I don't play.

Exactly. It's so funny you mentioning OSRS challenges. I actually had a section talking about how that sort of content was the future for MMORPGs. But I cut it because I thought the video was too long and people would get bored. I more or less completely agree with your line of thought though - I think if we get a new mmorpg its going to come more out of these type of things.
