0:27 I'm sorry, can we all just take the time to appreciate this MASTERFUL B-Roll shot? Good grief you guys put so much time and effort into your videos, and it shows.
I highly recommend you to give the Saturn a FRAM chip mod. The Saturn uses a CR2032 battery that gets drained fast, because not only is it used for keeping the time on your system, it's also used for keeping your save data. With this, you will not worry about losing your Virtual Hydlide save file.
Junkie Ward Anyone else here have, like, six freakin' Saturns because they can't stop finding awesome deals? My last one was a white Saturn from Japan for $6.xx that was supposedly "broken" but turned out to be working perfectly (thanks, Super Potato in Akihabara!). All the others were found locally in the USA for sub-$10 (my threshold).
Having just bought a Saturn model 1 for myself I’m really looking forward to all the hours of gaming I’ve missed out on, this videos going to be very helpful in getting the most out of my Saturn, thank you!

David Somoza Domenech It was a good console, but the idiots running Sega Japan at the time designed the console as a 2D system, despite 3D being the big thing at the time, and the future of gaming. That’s what killed it in my opinion.
can you explain how a 2D console can run games like Sega Rally, VF2, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon and so one ..... cause i never see that on Neo Geo. ..... The Saturn is a 2D AND 3D system and manager both as well as the others systems of it's generation.
I got my own Saturn last year and I already respect SEGA’s ideas from their own games and game systems. I feel shit from never owned one of SEGA game systems from my childhood years... at least from last year, I did end up use my money wise from what to had while I choose Saturn 👍🏻 I wish SEGA could at least continue make more games after Dreamcast.. it shouldn’t be their last game system.
I never owned it as a kid because it was waaaaaay too expensive for my single-mother to justify the purchase. We ended up with an N64 instead for Xmas 97.
@@ciredecgellar8232 The answer is in your reply, all the titles you mention came from First party or received full library coding support directly from Sega from the jump. The Saturn was an unoptimized mess from the start due too not getting the tools out fast enough, the power to match PsX effects (thru software) was there but Saturn documentation was very poor for 3rd party.
Looking forward to this. The PS1 and Saturn kind of passed me by in the 90s tbh (too busy using my Speccy, PC, Amiga 600, and stealing my Sister's Mega Drive. lol) I'm really starting to appreciate this era of machines though.
It's just a shame that the Saturn is among the few popular consoles (along with the SNES and MD / Gen) which can't easily be modded for true digital HDMI. :( The RGB output does look pretty nice though, especially on CRT.
ElectronAsh Oh, I just asked Try and Coury (and maybe Clint) about info on HDMI mods for the Sega Saturn. Such a shame the reality of HDMI compatable Saturn's, doesn't exist.
It is "possible" to do a true digital HDMI mod for the Saturn / SNES / Gen, just a LOT more complex, since you'd have to implement part or most of some of the video chips to do it. The only other way is to wait for the proper FPGA cores for those machines to start cropping up. It's only a matter of time, and "jwdonal" on TH-cam already has his FPGA SNES core running beautifully. By rights, it should essentially be THE most accurate SNES core on the planet right now (that we know of), as he checked every bit of timing against a real SNES using a Logic Analyser. (he made multiple Gigabytes worth of data captures from a real SNES.)
Thanks to you guys i just got my Saturn hooked up with SCART cables. AMAZING!!! It only cost me about 40-45 bucks and was totally worth it. I've been playing X-men Vs Street Fighter and it looks so awesome. For anyone thinking about doing this just be careful which converter box you buy. I ended up buying 2 because the first one stretched the image to widescreen without being able to change it. The second one has a "720P/1080P" button that allows you to cycle through some output options. If you want to have the option to play in the original 4:3 ratio, get that one. It's only a couple dollars more.
As time goes by i love the Saturn more and more. I didnt appreciate it in 1995 because i got the PS1 later that year and i just kinda treated the Saturn like a step-child after that. I feel remorseful now and repentant. Long live the Sega Saturn! Segata Sanshiro!!

I remember playing Virtua Fighter on the Saturn on display at Toys R Us in 1995. I eventually got a Play Station for Christmas which is what most of my friends had. I was always curious about the Saturn. I finally got one this year and have been enjoying it immensely. Assault Suit Leynos 2 and X-Men vs Street Fighter are amazing and I highly recommend. Gunbird is tons of fun as well!

Had to rewatch this episode after pondering for some time now why my Saturn always had such bland colouring after installing an S-video switcher to my CRT set up. Turns out it's of rather cheap quality and the one port I was using for Saturn output is faulty by not allowing the S-video plug to be seated all the way in. Switched it with another port and boom, a like a punch in the face all the brilliant colours of Cotton Boomerang hit my eye balls. Thanks for the great work guys, you're the best.
DO NOT upgrade Saturn video cables past composite if you're playing 3D games (which is most of them on Saturn). You'll regret it, unless you enjoy seeing your screen plastered with a dithered mess of pixel mesh all over the place! The developers CLEARLY had composite in mind with this console. On the other hand, 2D games such as Sonic Jam collection will look great in S-Video.

Totally! Just got the cable for my genesis and the adaptor for the saturn and its totally worth it! On genesis, the difference is just crazy. For saturn, going from s video to it is good but its not the same jump then on the genesis for sure!
they'll also work on the moon (I personally used one to open my favourite drink on the moon once)... what? besides it's not everyday one goes outside of the earth anyways
After buying a PVM and all the cables for all the systems I own, Street Fighter Zero 3 on the Saturn on the PVM was the first game that made me realize that it was all worth it in the end.
MoonSpirit check ebay. Just got one with 2 controllers and two games for $99 plus shipping. $124 total. Love it though. I spent about the same on my dreamcast but that came with 20+ games.
Quite a few good ones are cheap like Sega rally, virtua fighter 2, Daytona usa and many Japanese versions like nights, panzer dragoon and you can always play backups on it.
I only played a Sega Saturn once in my life. It was Nights at a Funcoland. I never even knew anyone who had one. I still watched this video anyway, because your videos have such high production quality, and I love your material.
I would disagree with the assertion that the 16-bit generation was considered the pinnacle of 2d gaming. I lived it my friend and loved every minute; However, it was the 32-bit generation that perfected drop dead gorgeous 2d graphics and it was unlike anything we had witnessed before. The 32-bit was both the pinnacle and death knell for 2d games. Titles like Radiant Silvergun, Grandia, Street Fighter Alpha, Doom, Castkevania Symphony of the Night, Alundra, Einhander, Final Fantasy Tactics, Ogre Tactics, and many more made this gen truly special. We saw sprites shine like never before making the previous generations of 2d gaming...look less than in every way. The color depth alone was a sight to be hold on the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation. Unfortunately, like all truly great things it had to end in order for the industry to push forward. As the generation progressed 2d games became a rarity. Yes, we still have 2d games but nothing like we had prior to the 32-bit generation in its prime.
You guys sure know how to make a man drop a tear or two, haha! Really glad the issues with the jump from 240p and 480i was covered as well. I have this issue constantly with that generation of consoles (Sat, PS1, N64) and I'll have to try turning off the Auto sync on the Framemeister like recommended on games that are constantly switching.
Would you guys be able to make a list of all the games shown in the video. Some of them look bad ass but idk what they are. I assume they are Japanese.
The best picture I've received from my Saturn was a composite to HDMI upscaler. Looks better than SCART and Component. The upscaling on 2D fighting games is insanely nice. Looks very good. Bought it on ebay for around $40. No lag. Converts to 1080p or 720p.
Hi! i`m from Spain and i have PAL and JAP Saturn, Can you tell me what is the best video-cable for this consoles? I have saw several times the video but my english is so bad and dont understand very good :( I use a CRT TV, Sony Trinitron.
[Try4ce] Does your TV have SCART? I'm not sure if consumer CRTs with SCART accept sync like sync-on-luma for RGB, but we recommend that if possible. The PAL Saturn does not have CSYNC, but the Japanese Saturn does. You could get a CSYNC RGB cable for the Japanese system, but it wouldn't really be any better than the sync-on-luma, which is a cable that you could use with BOTH systems. retro-access.com/collections/sega-saturn/products/sega-saturn-stereo-luma-jp-21-cable-for-xrgb-units-works-on-all-models-lead-cord
my XRGB works great on my saturn very impressed. Honestly didn't think much of Scart till i tryed this out on with my saturn. Now i just have to get a scart switcher for my system. You guys have really helped me out
+rob jackson [coury] they did and I had a bit about it in the script that I cut. Just because there was no real good photos of it and it seemed like a bit of a waste since I couldn't really go anywhere with it.
They are mostly the same as the Japanese versions. All Samsung Saturns use a VA1 motherboard and all Korean model 2 Saturns use a VA13 motherboard. The main difference is the power supply on both machines, and the region code and bios of the Samsung Saturn.
C L I C C Edit: Since I have an early comment here, I've always wanted to suggest that you guys make a collab with Guru Larry on British PCs. That would be pretty sweet.
I remember the Saturn one of the greatest consoles. My original one was stolen. I have been thinking of buying a new one. The prices of some good games are crazy though.
I just picked up a Japanese Saturn Model 1 and a few games and I was amazed at how translatable the games were. I got House Of The Dead, X-Men Vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes Vs. Street Fighter and X-Men Children Of The Atom (all Japanese) and I was able to play them very easily and I don't know any Japanese. I was on the fence about which Saturn (US or Japanese, Model 1 or Model 2) to purchase and based on the cost savings, I don't regret the purchase at all!
I didn't own a PS when it launched (I DID pick one up, late in its life) ...I owned a SATURN and was proud of it. Sadly, I got rid of it BUT wound up procuring a Model 2 about 15 years ago. I need one of those component cables in the video as my 4k telly doesn't support composite, nor s-video. GREAT DEEP DIVE!
I lived in Singapore from 2009-2012. I saw an ad on a classifieds board, this guy was selling his Saturn collection. I think I paid like $150. I got a Japanese Saturn that has a mod chip, a pro action replay cart, 3 controllers, 2 light guns with the boxes, and probably 50+ games. Lol. It was like winning the lottery. The replay cart died a few years back but I ordered another just the other day. His game selection was largely junk and bootleg games so I pitched them tears ago but the console works like a charm. I love being able to play Japanese games natively. I'm super excited for the new Replay cart to arrive though, been wanting to play Albert Odyssey lately. One of my all-time favorites and it's crazy that it's going for $300+ on ebay! I snagged a copy back in 2010 for probably less than $50.
There are actually grey with blue oval button model 2 Saturn's (I have one) - the best way to tell what you have is to actually open it up. Model 1's - the power supply is on the top part of the shell, model 2's - its on the bottom (with the motherboard) - model 3's - also on the bottom, but shorter than a model 2 power supply.
Great video. You may not known that but the Hi Navi Saturn with the lcd is the only Saturn that can’t have rgb output ( only composite or s-video). I have one so I am sure of it 😉
6:36 - Preaching the truth :D . The elimination of dot crawl and rainbows going from composite to s-video is definitely the most noticeable improvement in the analog video hierarchy. Going from s-video to component or RGB just cleans up the color bleed, which is much less offensive than dot crawl & rainbows.
Haha Thanks for doing my request :). I'm really looking forward to seeing the video about adjusting the geometry on the CRT's since my second PVM i bought as a backup has a little bit of an issue. I understand the basics but I like the way you guys explain everything. Very comprehensive. Thanks for the vidz!
I think the Saturn did Quadratic equations like nVIDIA's nV1 (Which is why those cards could play proper ports of Saturn games). They are more like skewed square textures to match a perspective rather than any kind of polygons. And this also made it harder for devs to detect collisions.
3:31 hey, that's me!!

Dodonpachi, battle garegga, hyper duel, Dracula nocturne, virus fighter, st zero 2, die hard arcade
There's a comment that lists all games in this episode somewhere near the top
The best picture I've received from my Saturn was a composite to HDMI upscaler. Looks better than SCART and Component. The upscaling on 2D fighting games is insanely nice. Looks very good. Bought it on ebay for around $40. No lag. Converts to 1080p or 720p.
Hi! i`m from Spain and i have PAL and JAP Saturn, Can you tell me what is the best video-cable for this consoles? I have saw several times the video but my english is so bad and dont understand very good :(
I use a CRT TV, Sony Trinitron.
Thanks a lot :), yes my CRT have 3 SCART, i buy a CSYNC for the JAP model and try it on the CRT and a LUMA for the PAL, thanks a lot :D
Killer soundtrack on this vid! Kudos to whoever picked these gems out!
Neo Geo RGB
No! PCEngine/Turbografx 16 RGB.
Nah, Tiger LCD RGB
My first dive into RGB gaming started on the Saturn during my tour in Korea back in late 2015. Got me a 14" PVM from the camps security guy.
YES!
You guys are amazing, your videos have some of the best production values that I've ever seen on TH-cam.
OMG I LOVE YOU WILLIAM HUNG!!!!!!!!! SHE BANGS!!!!
my XRGB works great on my saturn very impressed. Honestly didn't think much of Scart till i tryed this out on with my saturn. Now i just have to get a scart switcher for my system. You guys have really helped me out
didn't samsung make a saturn exclusive to korea
+rob jackson [coury] they did and I had a bit about it in the script that I cut. Just because there was no real good photos of it and it seemed like a bit of a waste since I couldn't really go anywhere with it.
They are mostly the same as the Japanese versions. All Samsung Saturns use a VA1 motherboard and all Korean model 2 Saturns use a VA13 motherboard. The main difference is the power supply on both machines, and the region code and bios of the Samsung Saturn.
Blocking japanese imports?
@@dreamstone00 yes even today they have the blocking issue
Great job guys! Been looking forward to this one for a while. Can't wait till that flash cart option becomes a real thing.
C L I C C
Edit:
Since I have an early comment here, I've always wanted to suggest that you guys make a collab with Guru Larry on British PCs. That would be pretty sweet.
I would absolutely second this.
I remember the Saturn one of the greatest consoles. My original one was stolen. I have been thinking of buying a new one. The prices of some good games are crazy though.
Clint!!!!
I was on the fence about which Saturn (US or Japanese, Model 1 or Model 2) to purchase and based on the cost savings, I don't regret the purchase at all!
please do best picture from ps2
Baylen
:D
I didn't own a PS when it launched (I DID pick one up, late in its life) ...I owned a SATURN and was proud of it. Sadly, I got rid of it BUT wound up procuring a Model 2 about 15 years ago. I need one of those component cables in the video as my 4k telly doesn't support composite, nor s-video. GREAT DEEP DIVE!
I just screamed "OH MY GOD NEW MY LIFE IN GAMING!!!" and my neighbour called the police and now I'm in jail thanks a lot guys.
+Nice Friendly Video Game Zone How are you commenting?
YOu're allowed to make 1 YT comment from prison. It's your right.
Nice Friendly Video Game Zone | But that's your second comment.
My name is Lance, and lol, I️ know a kid named Alex McDonald
No worries, just do a jailbar fix mod
Lovely use of the Sonic 3D: Blast soundtrack and a surprise appearance from clint! Great video :)
You guys are far and away the best gaming channel on youtube.
love it.
this video earned you a subscribe.
The BEST retro gaming content in youtube videos today.
8:15 between composite, svideo and RGB the jaggyness of all lines increased along with visual fidelity
The best Saturn Emulator is Mednafen. It plays a whole variety of Games. More than the other two.
A very timely video for my current project, hell of a bonus with LGR showing up too!
Great video. You may not known that but the Hi Navi Saturn with the lcd is the only Saturn that can’t have rgb output ( only composite or s-video). I have one so I am sure of it 😉
you didnt mention the crappy 10 pin din socket on the AV out being fiddly with rgb cables
6:36 - Preaching the truth :D . The elimination of dot crawl and rainbows going from composite to s-video is definitely the most noticeable improvement in the analog video hierarchy. Going from s-video to component or RGB just cleans up the color bleed, which is much less offensive than dot crawl & rainbows.
you guys do an amazing job with your videos. I don't even care about rgb but i can't stop watching your videos guys
For a some what small channel the production quality is freaking amazing it even beats the massive ones
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE SINCE THE FIRST TIME I'VE SAW THE CHANNEL!!!
THANK GOD!!!!
Omg, love the surprise cameo by LGR's Clint :D
Haha Thanks for doing my request :). I'm really looking forward to seeing the video about adjusting the geometry on the CRT's since my second PVM i bought as a backup has a little bit of an issue. I understand the basics but I like the way you guys explain everything. Very comprehensive.
Thanks for the vidz!
I think the Saturn did Quadratic equations like nVIDIA's nV1 (Which is why those cards could play proper ports of Saturn games). They are more like skewed square textures to match a perspective rather than any kind of polygons. And this also made it harder for devs to detect collisions.
