In Malaysia, the practice of holding phd students from graduating and doing the labor work were in the old days. Now the government imposed graduate on time (3-4 years for Phd) as key performance index for the supervisor.
Now that's a great system!

Oh the PhD struggles. I don't know if you've talked about it already but the comment you made about "taking the afternoon off" kinda hit me. I can't stress this enough but: it's okay to take a break the second you feel frustrated. Please please please, take care of your mental health, you won't be any more productive if you're messed up.
I am now in my 6th year of Ph.D. Pursued an off beat and rather difficult subject, became a mother in my first year, went to field trips with my baby, got in touch with community for target data, had no guidance whatsoever from my supervisor because they didn’t believe in my work, no feedback on my work ever. And now it’s been on for so long. What I started with so much passion has become something that stresses me out. I had a fellowship for the first five years but now even that is gone. Academia can be a very mean place and even after working so hard for so many years, it seems like I know nothing! your videos help though Andy, I keep going one day at a time

In my opionion, the current university institution is corrupt. In this time of internet, a lot of the subjects can be learnt and researched without the help of university, especially liberal arts, social sciences degrees that don't require the most advanced technology, you can simply learn everything at home. Sometimes professors are more a hindrance than guidance.

I'm at the end of 6th year, and still long way to graduate. First teaching and then research was my passion and the reason i started my phd but coming from mid level university to a higher level i didn't received enough funding from the beginning and had to work part-time the entire duration of my studies. Now i am at the point that it too late for me to graduate and do postdoc for a few year before even the chance of applying for faculty position, which has really discourage me to either switch to master and graduate, pause phd for one year and work full-time or dropout. Sorry it may not be motivating but from my experience doing a low funded phd would not help you to graduate in time just like other reasons you mentioned.
Why not go out into the world and work in that field for 6 years? You would be way ahead.
If you ran a food truck for a summer: Permits, parking, vehicle, health inspection, ordering/invoicing, payroll, etc. You would know more than someone spending two years and $$$ for an MBA.
That "cheap labour" comment hit me hard! And the one that supervisors barely enter the labs.
I get 700$ per month as a PhD and I am one of the "lucky" ones where I am...
So many people only know how to pass exams in a fixed system. Just following a track is an easy way.....very few do some critical thinking about how they can improve their situation by looking at the usefulness of their expertise. It really is so easy to learn a few different subjects on a lower level which can connect you to industry and a more flexible career.

when I was done with my masters in litterature and the university suggested that the possibilities for work was as a university teacher I took one look and it feelt that I would just be doing the same work writing an even longer paper as a PHD student. Since I had no interest in that I never even went for it, I know teaching would have been involved to, but I never saw myself as a teacher.

I don’t know who decides what is quality and what is not. I tried to not be perfectionist and they decided that my work was not good enough. Still struggling after years...
I am pursuing a phd for both personal reasons and because in the uk to be an academic and teach in higher education you require one, Many people nowadays with a masters degree are in already academia. A phd gives you the edge as far as i am concerned. As far as completion time, well, My phd will end in three years, why? because I say so. Anyone that gets in my way will not succeed.

I prefer to take the morning off instead of the afternoon since it is generally the shortest part of my day.
I think this might be more of a STEM issue. My supervisors would probably pay to have me finish faster. 😂
I've heard one time at my university that knowledge gets 'lost' as well. E.g. old hard disks getting lost. Is this still a thing that you know of?
I subscribe to this channel recently, but to be honest I'm starting to lose hope. I only have a couple months left, and I've written hardly any of the seven chapters that I set myself out to write. I don't know what happened. I might have lost my motivation.
What do you think of doing a postbacc before phd due to lack of experience in that certain field I would like to do?
It's so depressing. I am about to submit and I feel like all excitement is gone I just want to finish, I wish it pays out at the end. I am so broke and frustrated.I feel like it's a scam.

But from not beeing perfectionist could easily happen that you start producing shits... like quantity before quality and thats also really bad...
So, your experience is probably from a physical college. It does not work this way in an online college. I current go to UOP online and I have no mentor, supervisor or team for matter. I go through class that really do not add to my PhD. I personal believe they're filler classes and do all my research on my own. I have no clue what you mean about "grant money" or working for the university. Maybe you could do a video comparing online to physical colleges. Maybe UOP is a scam college and I am wasting my time, I don't know.
I am a Ph.D. chemistry student. Paying for my PhD at the university of Nairobi. My question is, why do most employers turn away from students from African graduates even if it's for remote (work at home jobs) like drug design (my field), please make a video on this
PhD students are overqualified and excessively academically oriented. They highly specialise in a topic. Age is also a big factor If you are smart enough to do a PhD then do not do a Phd. Seek job in the industry right after your master’s
It is bit easier to find job with PhDs in applied majors like engineering than pure sciences like chemistry, biology and math. Many mathematics PhDs get data scientist jobs these days. But it is not easy to get those jobs.
Also, if you are applying outside of Africa or your country (even for remote work), it is bit tough due to local available pool of candidates (especially in US). In US, PhDs and MS are becoming norms for some jobs (e.g. Aerospace, Geostatistics/Geochemistry). So employers prefer many available locals (even for remote work) because of educational and cultural similarities and in person availability in future if needed (If company stops remote work or calls in person to inspect labs, or for any reasons).
