One thing that bothered me was how underutilized Chase is.
He's a military pilot that lost his mom and sister and is now just a torso in a test tube. He can't eat delicious food anymore, can't touch things physically so he can't do things like play sports, play video games, pilot a plane, or even hug his own loved ones.
Even worse he finds out that he's a mental clone. His original mind was fused to the first Genlock that later becomes Nemesis. And if that wasn't bad enough, the enemy has created an army of them. An army of Chases that were all tortured and brainwashed into becoming loyal and ruthless soldiers that all think their lives were taken away.
So much to take in for the guy, but the thing is, the show doesn't really show too much of Chase's dilemma. You could say, "oh he had a year to get over it" to which I say "yeah, but..... that's boring. That could've been really interesting to see him get over all that." For the most part, Chase is pretty chill throughout it all. I would expect him to be angry and confused about his loss and new disability. Being depressed after his former girlfriend just gave him anger and confusion instead of welcoming him back to open arms (not to have him as a boyfriend again of course, but as a friend). I was also thinking he would have trust issues against David Tennant now since he's a backup of some other guy. Do they have multiple saves? If he dies, will he get replaced just like that? Is he just expendable to them? To the doctor, is he just a science experiment to him? What's stopping their side from creating their own Nemesis army? All those questions could be running through Chase's head. He has depth, but the show doesn't really take advantage of it,

To be fair, the show showed that he can play sports, and enter the Either which is there version of online gaming. And he basically is a plain since his mech has flight capacity.
But yeah, there is a tone of untapped drama that is never used.

I think Gen:LOCK actually showed a ton of improvement in that area. There are so many background details they include that reveal information.
Just in episode 1, you get the walls of the apartment with photos of Chase's dad in the NYPD, and a folded flag. Meaning "killed in the line of duty". You get the details of what is in the apartment and the lighting colors changing when the camera switches from Ms. Chase, to Dri, and back. Showing how much people can customize their spaces with their augmented reality, and how the characters' tastes differ. When the power cuts out, you see the overlays fail and see what is actually on the walls. In the base, you get the "wall of fallen heroes" pre timeskip with maybe a dozen plaques on the wall, and post-timeskip with plaques covering both sides of the hall for its entire length. When the Union attacks, you have digital billboards with Union propaganda displayed "We can lead the world without compromise" giving insight into their stated motives, and raising questions about them hacking the billboard. The Union shoots down civilian transports, and "weaponized Nanotech" is spoken as you see the black smoke of it coming off of a children's swing. The scene of the civilian flashing the Union symbol on his phone, then the nanotech cloud passing over them after, while his wife looked shocked and surprised, says a lot about sleeper agents and political radicalization. The NYPD drone getting hacked, and their quick response shows Union technical superiority, and the fact it happens often enough that they actually put a protocol in place to disable the drone. The giant sea wall in the bay is a nod to rising sea levels and climate change. The knocking down of the Statue of Liberty, besides being a standard disaster cliché, speaks to Union motives on symbols if not the concept of liberty itself. The way the Behemoth's turrets and cameras suddenly snap to target Razzle's plane when she starts charging her EMP, already said the thing she was calling out as she died, that they can target EMPs. So then you see Chase charging his up, and putting his aircraft *in between* the guns and the bomb to protect it. Then as he is crashing, you see his cockpit readout saying "Ejection failure" on the flickering display. Like I said, post timeskip you see the full memorial wall, and Miranda has picked up a nasty scar. That alone implies the war isn't going well, which is backed up later by the map with nearly half the US in red, but also hammers home that she has likely changed a lot due to her experiences. Migas is obviously overworked doing repairs, since he's working on something that is literally about to go out. Yaz's mech getting impaled showed the "no room for a pilot" thing to Leon and the "Hacking Failed" readout for the Union soldier showed it wasn't a drone. As they all retreat from battle, you get a tiny clip of Nemesis' carrier just arriving on site.
Other episodes have more, like "Ship of Theseus" on Dr. Weller's displays basically foreshadowing what Nemesis is. Or how in the gen:Lock briefing, the Cyberbrain is displayed on screen, then you see one getting loaded in the Holon, so when Nemesis rips open Cammie's chest, you know exactly what he's after and you see the very real danger.
They still have room to improve, but I think what they've shown here is leagues better than what we've previously seen.

I am not as made about the first episode because I watched them both one after the other. I will say that the story works better as 22 minute episodes. I do not hate the fact that the enemy is not fully explained because I knew that it will be explained next season. I will eat my words if the second season does not focus on the enemy at all though. I'm a pretty avid mecha fan and this show was honestly fun to watch, even the "slow" parts as you say were interesting for someone who likes that, it's not a prequiset to care about the tech mumbo jumbo, in fact some shows do amazingly well without it, but it makes me want to explore the ideas behind the tech. The show makes me want to see more of the backstroke for each person and to delve into what drives them, while episode one was a bit weak, I think most mecha fans were able to easily keep up with it and follow the chaotic action of the start of a global war. And to everyone who has been saying that this is why rwby volume 5 was crap, just no. Volume 5 had its own issues and would have suffered immensely even without this show.

If Gen:Lock and Starship Troopers were to combine, it could result in a thrilling and action-packed universe. Here's a possible scenario:
In a future where humanity has colonized other planets, the Terran Federation from Starship Troopers faces a new threat: an alien invasion like the Diagnoses from Gen:Lock. To combat this menace, the Federation develops advanced mechs, inspired by the Synchros from Gen:Lock.
The combined universe would blend the sci-fi elements and action of both series, exploring themes of patriotism, duty, and the human cost of war.
    Some possible storylines:
    - "Invasion Frontlines": The Mobile Infantry and Gen:Lock's pilots join forces to defend against the alien invasion.
    - "Mech Warfare": The heroes develop new strategies to combat the aliens' advanced technology.
    - "Unity in Diversity": The combined forces learn to put aside their differences and work together to save humanity.
This combination would create a rich and exciting narrative, exploring the intersection of patriotism, technology, and humanity in the face of overwhelming odds.

If Gen:Lock were to be like Exoprimal or Pacific Rim, it could result in a thrilling fusion of mecha, action, and sci-fi elements. Here's a possible scenario:
    *Gen:Lock: Mech Hunters*
In a world where technology has advanced to merge human minds with machines, a team of elite pilots, known as the "Syncers," pilot powerful mechs called "Syncros" to fight against an alien threat.
    *Influences from Exoprimal:*
    - Fast-paced, action-packed battles against monstrous enemies.
    - Syncros with unique abilities and playstyles, inspired by Exoprimal's exosuits.
    - A focus on teamwork and strategy to take down formidable foes.
    *Influences from Pacific Rim:*
    - Epic, large-scale battles against towering monsters, inspired by Pacific Rim's Kaijus.
    - Syncros with a mix of sci-fi and industrial design elements, similar to Pacific Rim's Jaegers.
    - A sense of camaraderie and heroism among the Syncer pilots, inspired by Pacific Rim's Drift technology.
    *Gen:Lock's Unique Twist:*
    - The ability to "Sync" with machines, allowing pilots to control Syncros with their minds.
    - A deep exploration of the consequences of merging human and machine consciousness.
    - A diverse cast of characters with complex relationships and backstories.
    *Possible Storylines:*
    - "The Syncer Initiative": The pilots must learn to work together and master their Syncros to defeat the alien threat.
    - "The Machine Uprising": The Syncros begin to develop their own consciousness, leading to a conflict between humans and machines.
    - "The Alien Infiltration": The aliens infiltrate the human ranks, forcing the Syncers to question who they can trust.
This fusion would create a unique and captivating universe, blending the best of both worlds to explore the intersection of technology, action, and humanity in a world of mecha and sci-fi elements.

It’s actually debatable if both Chases mom and sister die.
The original Rooster Teeth airing indicated that Chases mom definitely had a plan once the attack began. And later after the crew go into the either, before it goes offline we see a glimpse of Chases sisters Avatar. Hinting that they did indeed survive.
Though in the toonami showing, Chase’s moms power walk is cut out completely and we simply see there apartment and not them. Leaving it more ambiguous as to what actually happened.

I just watched finished this and honestly the biggest thing that really got me bored throughout the whole thing was that I didn’t know the stakes. As you’ve said, there’s absolutely no setup for the fight and overall conflict. Why should I be invested? What’s the goal of “The Union”? What’s the purpose of The Polarity (is that it? I never really heard it properly lol)? What happened to the United States of America to where it’s no longer the USA? These are never explained and it ruins the entire show because I have no idea of what’s at stake and why it matters. “The Union” is just a copy paste of The Federation from CoD: Ghosts yet somehow done worst.
Edit: btw, Leon in the earlier episodes is said by the Doc to be Gen:Lock Compatible but he’s too old for it to be safe, hence why he ends up in a coma.

Glad you got past Ep.1 and did this review. I liked Gen:Lock too and I will agree that Ep.1 is a bit of a slog. But as you astutely observed, the characters save it, ultimately. Also, could just be me, but I feel like the city-scape scenes in Gen:Lock had a big influence on the city-scapes in Mantle for RWBY7...I felt the Mantle city-scapes were really impressive for RWBY7 and it was thanks to lessons learned from Gen:Lock, or so I'd like to believe, since "oof", the production history of this show behind the scenes was quite the shit-show and a big financial flop for RT. I liked Season 1 and look forward to Season 2 but it's probably a good thing Gray Haddock got the boot. Unfortunately Joel Heyman ("Caboose", "Dr. Oobleck") has also left Rooster Teeth. Luckily since Leon was such a bland nobody, recasting him would be easy. Gray has expressed a willingness to continue voice roles for RT but they're under no obligation to take him up on that offer, IMHO.

It was not really hard to understand what was going on with the fight.
Things arent explicitly explained and there are a lot of lesser details that are great but not needed to understand whats going on.
Its pretty obvious its a big oppressive government. There are a lot of smaller details like propaganda and drone design that add flavour but you dont need to pick up on all of them to get the gist.
I thought that showing the relationship was a good way to quickly get invested in the characters. They were quickly showed to uave good chemistry before the fight. It felt pretty humanized, even though it was relatively short.
Really disappointed they didnt explore the family eacaping better in season 2...

When Genlock S1 came out I really liked it. I was really into Titanfall 2 at the time, so I just got into it easily because of its vaguely similar "Future, guns, and big mechs", and the plot was... decent. Shows like those are watched more for the characters and the action scenes than the plot itself (Similarly to, for example, RWBY, another RT's IP that I also enjoy despite its numerous hiccups). The plot was not award-winning material, but it at least wasn't eyebrow-raising.
Genlock S2 is a mess. It has SO MANY DESTRUCTIVE IDEAS that I actually wonder, is that even legal to show? Like GLORIFYING DOOMSDAY CULTS AND RITUALISTIC SUICIDE (and then doing the disgustingly hypocritical "if you are struggling seek mental help")? Did someone ACTUALLY READ THROUGH the script and greenlit it?
    This is so shitty. Ugh.
Would love to hear you rant on season 2, although wouldn't recommend ever touching this piece of shit for your own entertainment.

Do people really think that rwby volume 5 would have been good if this wasn't created? like genuinely? because you must be delusional if you think so, rwby volume 4 was horrid, rwby volume 5 being worse was not a surprise at all, and if volume 6 and 7 are anything to go by, it frankly didn't matter if rwby had the money and this show wasn't created, because we just would've wasted more money on rwby instead of creating a new series.
In other news, I genuinely liked Gen:Lock, as someone who loves story/characterization, this series does it well and it could literally, only improve in other areas from here if they were to make a second season. I'm so confused that people think that this was bad in anyway, or that they compare it to rwby, like you people realise, they're different shows right?

Not so much about the show itself as much the production issues and behind the scenes trouble that went into producing it. Gen lock went way over budget and sapped funding from other RT shows as well as put the employees working on it through 80 hour crunch weeks with no overtime (illegal). So a lot of people resent it regardless of the actual program's quality or lack thereof.

I'm a casual viewet so i tend to enjoy things while i watch them. I don't often dislike things until i review them afterwards. I can only remember 2 times where i hated what i was watching during the watch. Star wars episode 9 and genlock. It is mostly good and i love almost everything in it but how they handled chase pisses me off.
His injuries were a big deal. The death of his family is a big deal. Not being the real chase is a REALLY big deal. Being locked out of his body is a big deal. They could have made a show twice as long about just these things, instead they relegated it to a few episodes and resolved it in such a lackluster fashion, though admittedly that's subjective. Ultimately i feel the same about this as i do about the white fang. Big problems require proportionally big solutions.
Other than that i loved the show.

I know the movie Avatar isn't all that original..but the plot of Gen:Lock is exactly the plot of Avatar. Soldier whose body gets destroyed in war is the only person compatible with the mech/avatar body (in Avatar it's because the main character is the twin brother of the user, and in Gen:lock it's because Chase has the right genes for the mech).
Then if we look at RWBY, there are MANY similarities between it and Avatar The Last Airbender! What is up with RT and ripping off Avatar ip's? lol
