Absolutely agree! We were visiting SF last year and went to Alcatraz. The self guided tour makes it possible to explore at your own pace. And venture off too. It is definitely worth it. I’m so glad we went.

I visited Alcatraz about 20 years ago and it's definitely worth the cost! Thanks for this video and your other about San Francisco. Newly married in the military and off to S. Korea unaccompanied within a month, my bride and I met in San Francisco during my. midtour break. So much to see and do!
This is a great video! And your most important tip is spot on: Buy tickets well in advance. If you're coming during summer, tickets can be sold out up to a month in advance!

I have been here a number of times since the 1990s. It is a must visit! It is just a shame how much it has degraded since the 1990s and how much less of the prison you can see. There used to be a lot more areas of the prison you could see.
How’d you do at the Rock?
I'm glad I visited Alcatrez but honestly it wasn't my fav part, actually found it stank (bird poo) and was super windy the day we visited. Glad we did it but preferred Golden Gate Bridge and the Sequia woods.

I hate having to take visiting friends & family over to Alcatraz. It is truly depressing. I agree that it's worth a visit. One visit. Only. I've done so many. Grrr. I don't go inside anymore. The island is quite lovely - just not the jail! Be aware that in summer fog can roll in around 1530 (3:30pm) so going in the morning can be advantageous. It can get cold on the Bay - in San Francisco we wear layers always - the day may start off very warm but it won't be on Alcatraz.

The prison should let people sleep in a jail cell overnight , for that real Alcatraz experience. Throw in a free breakfast for them to. If you don't believe in ghosts, you might change your mind,
Not a good idea. You never know if you're dealing with ambulance chasers who are looking for a lawsuit. It would be too much work and paper mumbo jumbo to sift through all to avoid being sued by some blowhard who wants a fast buck. And I bet that's why they never allow this.
We were actually talking about how cool of an experience that would be!

They should knock it down and transform into a 5 Star hotel. Probably go for $500 a night or more.
