Sony SLV-D300P Flash Rewind VHS Tape FF/REW Cycles for Many Tapes

  • I picked up this VCR/DVD combo at a rummage sale for only $1. The DVD player does not function well, but the VHS portion is near perfect! This is the Sony SLV-D300P model, and it features the flash rewind which advertises rewinding a standard T-120 (SLP mode 6 hour tape) in about a minute. So in this video, I test this player's fast forward and rewind speeds for various tape lengths. I start with the longer tapes and end with the shortest ones. I will have a list of tapes used below in case anyone wishes to skip ahead. I assume most will be bored after watching the first tape anyway, but I made this video for any VHS tape enthusiasts out there like me who, for some odd reason, like to watch tapes rewind, especially at very high speeds like this VCR is capable of. I'm not sure if this is the fastest VCR out there for rewind speed, but I imagine it is among the fastest at least. As you will see in this video, the longer the tape, the faster it rewinds. This is great for feature length movies, as it takes about a minute for most. Shorter tapes, on the other hand, that are T-60 or less can take a long time to rewind. I don't know much about the technology of these, but I will say it is impressive how the VCR can estimate how long a tape is and use that to determine the fast forward or rewind speed.

    I am in the midst of a crisis of nostalgia, so I found this video. Man, the old life was so much better, I miss the old corded phones, the VHS, audio tape and of course the music and my old friends ... the internet can be a great technological advance, but I would trade it for the way to be from the 90s without thinking twice.

      Smartphones are way better and can be used anywhere whereas old day corded basically could be used only in 1 spot
      Also VHS were always unreliable and would degrade with every use as would cassette tapes so modern technology is 100% way better and portable

      Bro, I would take VHS out of that statement, image quality is nowhere near today standards, even players were reliable, they would betray you at some point and in the worst way possible, specially those "silent" ones which relied on rubber belts for the load/eject system as those belts aged they started slipping, leaving the eject process halfway-through and ripping the tape into oblivion upon ejecting. Had 2 of my most favorite tapes ruined because of this

    Oh man, this VCR is gentle with the slowdowns. My VCR always gave this loud THUNK sound (followed by some additional whining noises as the player still tried to ff the tape, until it finally gave up after 4 or 5 seconds) when it reached the end of the tape.

    Panasonic have the Super Drive rewinds. JVC's had the VA dubbing features under the flap so you can record your own voice acting soundtrack on a pirate copy or a taped off of the TV production. Sharp's have 6 Heads and SECAM and NTSC along with the normal PAL so it still works if you move to a different country with different tapes as long as you have the plug converters or if you wanted to play those tapes in the UK.

    why don't you play a movie in rewind WITH sound!? most VCRs don't review with sound .

    • @patricknedz
      @patricknedz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the VCR mutes the sound because it would be too obnoxious to people and they didnt want to hear the squeaky sound.
      I thought it would be cool to hear it in the faster version though. only on audio tapes you can do that.

    • @WooferCooker
      @WooferCooker 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Actually it's because the tape is usually lifted off of the audio head to prevent excessive wear. The video heads get away with this because they're spinning at much a speed, it really isn't effecting them.
