    For those wondering (as I was), they were spraying the lacquer master (which is soft) with silver nitrate, then dipping it into a nickel bath to electroplate the master...essentially taking the soft lacquer and making a metal twin so it can then be use to stamp the vinyl (PVC) cookies in the press.

      I thought, they would have changed to the DMM process completely, it eliminated this step and by the way, it's possible to extend the recording time to 30 minutes per side without audible impairment.

      Both silver nitrate, and a solution that will cause the silver nitrate to react and deposit on the surface as pure silver. For the chemistry nerd, it's basically a spray-on Tollens reaction.
      And doing that first is needed because of course, you can only electroplate objects that conduct electricity

    • @honeysup
      @honeysup 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +25

      @@robfriedrich2822 It's not possible. Only about 30 DMM cutting lathes were ever made in the world, and about 10 of them were later converted to be used for conventional lacquer cutting. Georg Neumann GmbH was the only manufacturer the actual DMM cutting equipment as part of its VMS80 series lathes. Since the sale of Neumann to German microphone manufacturer Sennheiser, Neumann no longer produces lathes or supplies parts. As of 2009, there were only seven publicly-usable DMM cutting facilities left in the world, all located in Germany, Netherlands, or Czech Republic. US lost its last DMM cutting facility in 2005 with the closure of New York record manufacturer Europadisk. Europadisk's DMM lathe was sold at auction on 2005 to the Church of Scientology for US $72,500.

      Mechanical is a poor choice of words... if anything digital playback sounds mechanical. Records are analog because the actual sound waves cut the groove, so the needle playing it back is as close to the original as you can get.

      Since 2010 the demand is rising and the presses are running overtime.

    I remember seeing a film back in about 1950 or so that showed this same process for 78, 33 1/3, and 45 RPM records. The 78s were on their way out so to speak, the 33 1/3 were very expensive relative to the cost of the old 78s, and the 45s were the way of the future and very cheap. You could buy a 78 RPM for about $1-2.00 dollars (USD), the 33 1/3 records were in the range of $3.00 to perhaps $10.00 or more depending on the type of music (classical music records were very expensive while children's music, Christmas music, even religious music were much lower in price). The new 45 RPM records were about $0.75 cents each, or even cheaper, and remained in that price range for several years. The 45s were almost exclusively for the new Rock and Roll genre. I remember being amazed at how quickly the records were coming off the assembly line and finally understood why the manufacturing of records was always referred to as "pressing".

Mas isso não diminui o mérito e a qualidade da Vinil Brasil. Até porque esses equipamentos não são mais fabricados. E quando dão problema, eles passam por reparos.
      A Vinil Brasil também faz uma inspeção sonora na matriz e depois visual nos discos prontos. E após uma tiragem de 50 cópias, eles fazem uma outra inspeção, que inclui a sonora, a fim de evitar falhas na produção.

      The magical process is the reduction silver that is sprayed on. You may notice there are two streams of liquid, one with silver the other with a reducer that makes the silver precipitate from solution and deposit on the shellac master to provide a near perfect impression of the cut grooves, backed with the electroplated (usually) nickel it forms the stamper to make the grooves in the vinyl almost exact copies of the cut grooves.

      Well, a lossless digital recording and a good quality player, with proper DAC, amplifier and speakers, produces the most accurate depiction. Vinyl adds distortion, which people also call "the vinyl sound". It's got a specific sound signature to it. In other words, digital recordings are as precise as you can go, while vinyl is imperfectly perfect in its own way. The irony is, most new vinyl recordings, are made from a digitized master.

    • @crabby7668
      @crabby7668 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      No digital recording is truly lossless because it is sampled. Lossless really refers to the codec algorithm which doesn't lose information when it's decoded, as some do. There are many good reasons to go digital, but any conversion from analogue will lose some information. The only way not to is to have an infinite rate of sampling, which is obviously impractical.
