"We have forks... There are a ton of Firefox forks..."
And there is nothing good about it. Tons of forks based on other forks based on outdated software and maintained by one guy or a small group of volunteers in their free time is not a good option for web surfing. Everyone can clone someone's else repo, but understanding the complicated codebase, maintaining it and developing important security patches and features is a different story.

9:40 Hey DT. On the topic of encrypting hard drives, I would like to comment a few things. First though a disclaimer, that I am from Germany, so I am writing this from the perspective from German law (though it should also be applicable to US law).
In 2016 the govt raided my home because they suspected I had software they deemed illegal on my computer (I was in high school at the time and very into computer security research). They had a search warrant & took pretty much every hard drive they could find (they wanted to take the whole PC but I could convince them not to, seeing as I had my finals coming up).
Trying to keep a long story short, they didn't find anything worth prosecuting (big surprise), but they ended up keeping my drives for OVER A YEAR. Over a year without my original data hurt a lot, especially since I had a lot of files that were too big to feasibly sync over the cloud.
My lawyer at the time informed me that had I encrypted my drives, I likely would've gotten them back much sooner, since in Germany you cannot be compelled to provide a password (same as US 5th amendment against self-incrimination), so if they see an encrypted drive, they will try to brute-force the password for a little bit, and then give up. But since my drives were unencrypted, they took their sweet time going through everything (which was A LOT of data).
And of course then there is always the possibility of them finding something benign, but which technically is still against the law, as they did in my case with "copyrighted" material, insisting to format one of my drives before handing it back to me. It had nothing important on it, but was annoying nonetheless.
Moral of the story: Encrypt your drives. As I understand it, even in the US police are not always respecting 4th amendment rights. So you need to make sure they cannot be violated on a technological level.

"would you use windows if it were free software?"
No, it sucks too much, I already have to suffer it at work every day.
However, I would have a different opinion on it. Also, it would probably mean that Wine would use the real libraries instead of being a clean-room implementation as it is today, so it would be much more practical to use Windows apps on Linux.
The world would be a better place.

Funnily you disabling your Gemini capsule is a pretty strong argument against Gemini. If you have a job and a life and maintaining a site is already a lot of work, leaving you no space to also maintain a gem capsule, it's the same for anyone anywhere. Which is why Gemini will only exist as a fleeting hobby before fading further into the obscurity that it already finds itself in.

    • @shutdowncnn6086

Gemini is kind of like the old AM radio. Also emailing is falling by the wayside in favor of cell phone messaging. The only thing for certain is change. My wife likes reading real books, the ones with paper pages, which do not need a battery device plus circuits to read. :)

DT, remind your audience to donate to, at least, their favorite or most frequently used, open source project. These developers have all kinds of expenses related to what they do, just like the rest of us. I think sometimes they "sellout" because they actually need the money.

If Firefox dies, Librewolf is not going to stick around either. It's a hacked together project that applies some basic patches to whatever the latest Firefox release is. It takes a lot of effort to keep a browser up to date with current web standards. That's the reason there are no huge engines competing with Google. Browsers need to constantly be updated for security as well. It requires a completely different and expansive skill set than basically applying a user.js file.
Same reason why Tor Browser and Icecat are dead in the water if Firefox dies as well. All firefox based browsers will go the Palemoon and Waterfox route. We can kid ourselves saying those are viable projects but they are not.

Good question on Open Hardware. AMD processors both CPU and GPU graphic cards are very good at running open source software Linux and FreeBSD. Nvidia GPU's will require to run at max performance their own priority device drivers sometimes a pain to install. I have built eight workstations for myself in the last five years. And one eight drive server for storage. A mix of AMD and Intel systems, all run great but have found AMD works best with opensource!

There is no need for them to test an ISO if the system they currently have is working just fine. If automatically pushing out updates is so bad why do you use rolling release distros? Hey, DT. It sure would be a blessing if you could make a video about living inside of the terminal as far as utility, if that makes sense, maybe networking type stuff. A part of me really wants to learn deeper into what I can do in terminal and in what ways I could modify a terminal-only pc, vm, pi. For example, is it possible to modify my terminal's appearance and whatnot if it's just terminal Linux and didn't have a GUI like Raspberry Pi OS Lite. There's different terminal emulators on desktop linux, but I'm looking for a different variety for non-GUI linux.

Otherwise the clear command not always do the same thing. I use only live operating system so I have occasion to experience this. In first case the command really clear, so all text will be deleted from the terminal. This is for me the normal mode, since I suppose that also the RAM will be emptied. In second case the clear command only moves the sceen with text up, so apparenty the screen is clear but you can scroll for the previous text. This mode of operation is very annoying for me but I cannot figure out which setting controls this behaviour.

If Linux became proprietary somehow, in a hypothetical situation that it somehow became proprietary and there were no forks, and Windows suddenly became Open Source, I'd switch to a more terminal focused lightweight Windows distro. But the thing is that due to licenses and forks, Linux cannot become proprietary and Windows will probably never be Free and Open Source. That’s the reason why WSA in windows 11 can only run apps from the Amazon App Store. Secondly, how’s Android any less Linux-like than pine os (or whatever they use)? I can run any Linux binary of arm architecture provided I’ve all the required dependencies satisfied, compile packages, and even have a package manager through 3rd party sources. Android 13 is, in fact, rumoured to support kvm. Compare that to something like Chrome OS which is infinitely more limited than Android, but is still considered a Linux distro. Don’t see a point why Android can’t be categorised in the same category.

Still kinda trashy, but many other OSS do that, GNOME and KDE for instance, although it is off by default, which is not the case in Audacity. To uninstall, get a list of installed packages before you install DTOS. Then you after installation you can take a new list. They you know the difference, and can uninstall all new packages that are in the second list but not in the first.

Hey DT! I've started using Manjaro I3 after your recommendation of it as a entry point to tiling window managers. Really like it and I'm working on my configs. How would you recommend me saving my configs for future use? On git? I know should know how to make backups but I'm not very organized 😬

If they would release MS Windows XP under a free license, then they probably would rebuild it and get it to be quite good.

You can make Crrl+L work in Bash vi mode, just add this line to your ~/.inputrc:
    Control-l: clear-screen
