When I read this book, I was a nursing mom at the time. When I say this book hit me hard, it hit HARD! When you're nursing a child, it is pure love and strength. To do this for a stranger is so vulnerable and personal. You are scarificating your own nutrition and ability to survive to ensure the survival of another. It was a huge scarface of her dignity as well. Such a powerful image of Ma Joad, who embodies resilience and strength. Her feeding a starving man, representing the themes of community, compassion, and the human spirit's endurance in the face of adversity. This act of kindness highlights the importance of solidarity among the oppressed, suggesting that despite individual suffering, there is hope for collective survival and support. Overall, the ending emphasizes themes of social justice, the struggle for dignity, and the interconnectedness of humanity. It leaves readers with a sense of both despair and hope, reflecting the harsh realities of the time while also celebrating the enduring strength of people in the face of overwhelming challenges. 10/10 ending!!!!!
I listened to the book on Audible and I went in blind, knowing only the general premise. I didn't realize that I was at the end when it happened. I wasn't expecting a happy ending by the time I was halfway through, but. It. Just. STOPPED. Like the lights went out. Like you feel when your car dies in the middle of the street. It just ENDED. I longed for a conclusion but I am adjusting to why it ended the way it did. Still trying to decide if I am okay with it.
me too!! **insert heartbreak emoji. just finished reading it. an. literally I'm mad. I'm like, "is my book missing the next chapter?" whatever happened next to the joads? did they kick em out of the barn? where did they end up going to? and al? what happened to Tom!! what the heck happened to noah! to connie?
Good breakdown of the book! I had the same reaction at the end: just... whoa. Head spinning. Of the books regarded as "classic," this is one of the very best, IMO. The ending is as honest as the rest of the book, not some happily-ever-after ending. Sadly, the book is still relevant today.

The ending is eye-popping. And it's heart-rending, because it's the end.
Yes! The ending left me in utter shock!!
