I went hunting for some Martin Mull and this did the trick. Very funny and talented man, he made the world smile. Thank you sir and rest in well deserved peace.
Before Steve Martin found bluegrass, Mull was a versatile master at incorporating his cynical sophisticated a**hole persona to perfection. Fernwood 2 Night, in 1977 just two years after Saturday Night Live's debut, produced by legend Norman Lear, was so far ahead of its time that it looks prescient right now. Way before Garry Shandling's shows, it also gave us the gift of Fred Willard.
soitgoes, thanks for your comment.....for you just might be right about his being the absolute best "sit down" comic....and proof of his talent is the fact that he still shows up in TV comedies still today in 2016.....like his role as the "drug induced" pharmacists in Two & A Half Men. I have more Mull in my comedy section at www.imasportsphile.com
Martin roasted me once at a show in 1980. He said something like: Before the show I was back stage putting my 30 minutes of jokes and entertainment list together for you, but then I thought, you guys deserve something more, so I am just going to mix things up tonight and just wing it. I yelled "Go for it!" Then for the next 5 minutes he went on a roast of epic proportions. He started off with "Isn't it sad when interrelated family members marry?" I sure wish I had a recording. What a memory.
I consider myself lucky to have seen Martin Mull perform back around 1974, when I was still in high school. He played in a little college coffee house on the campus of Fairley Dickenson University in Teaneck, NJ. where patrons sat cross-legged on the floor at low round tables. He wasn't nationally famous then, touring by himself as "Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture". He had one or two albums out, and his acting career was yet to take off. A high point was him performing his ode to ex-hippies, "Let's Be Normal".
He just turned 80 a week ago! I saw him play at least half a dozen times in the early/mid 70s - including the Roxy. We only knew him as a singer/songwriter/comedian back then. I also had a couple reprints of his paintings. Such a talented guy.
Vox Pox, thanks for your comment....for we at ImaSportsphile responsible for posting the 300+ vintage comedy videos on our webpage totally understand Martin Mull being their favorite comic....for he is a legend of comedy in our books....who has left the world with enough great work long after the 1970's until all the way through the early 2000's.....as we are happy to have the various videos showing his comic genius....considering them "nuggets of gold" in our treasure chest of memories.
@@marksharp5999 In live interviews on The Tonight Show, Williams often relied on stereotypical "Rufus" and "Bruce" voices that would be in bad taste today, and weren't so acceptable for many people back then

I remember seeing Martin Mull and His Fabulous Furniture at the Armadillo. I think it speaks volumes that I don't remember who he opened for, but I remember him.
This was Martin Mull's literal audition for Fernwood Tonight & Norman Lear. Recorded at The Roxy in Hollywood Ca (as told to Kevin Pollak on his 'chat show' podcast #64 on TH-cam) At some time in this 'audition' Martin stands up and sez,, 'Do I get the Job" ? RIP Sir
He did a live appearence at a club called Salt in Newport RI in this era and he appeared with a CB radio mounted on his guitar, stopping mid song to chat on the CB. I found it a LOT funnier then it sounds, but I was pretty much stoned 24/7 in those days so maybe it wasn't
CLASSIC !! ...*..I love " Barth Gimble "..I am 55 now and remember Martin was always fun to watch ! ...the song " Jesus is Easy " is awesome too..( He spoke about the song and he was very serious about it, it's great !
was actually watching clips from Fernwood Tonight over the last few months and was caught off guard by the news of his passing. ( *He was great on Arrested Development as well)
I'll tell you what the only one even close to this level of sarcastic Improv is perhaps Chevy Chase and Bill Murray but I don't think so MM is one of a kind
Saw MM at SUNY GENESEO in 1980. In closing the concert (it was amazing) he said, "Just want to thank you for coming tonite - or however you reacted to the show..." Did he just say that ? HILARIOUS. Absolute brilliance.
"🎶I threw my...I threw my...I threw my...I...My...I threw my driiink... across the lawn🎶 Here he comes. He's so happy. He just sold the house!"...As irreverent an entertainer who ever lived. Thank you, Mr. Mull...
A buddy of mine shared this to me I remember his early career I just showed this to my girlfriend and she said oh that's the guy that was on Roseanne I told her he had quite a career long before that
Martin Mull had a career that spanned the better part of 5 decades....from the 1970's to 2010's....always creating new "uniquely twisted" characters....he is a legend of comedy at ImaSportsphile....and we value our Martin Mull library grealy.
Leelee Lovely, thanks for your comment.....as it means a lot to me cuz so many great comedians like Martin Mull are being forgotten....which makes my daunting task of posting all 2300 hrs. of vintage sports, comedy and music that I have in a Sony BetaMax cassette library (transferring from cassette to digital)....in order to post on my webpage at www.imasportsphile.com

Did you see him handle that heckler? What a pro!
It occured around 1:30 I’m sure the heckler did not even understand they were being humiliated, and isn’t that the best way to handle hecklers? ;-)

Agree
I agree way ahead of its time. Had all his albums
When you go back and see that "60 Minutes to Kill" now you realize how it was sort of SNL before SNL.
Remember seeing him live in Cambridge Mass. Funny and talented.
Have you seen the skits Fred Willard did for Jimmy Kimmel Live? Really hilarious deadpan bits.
Brilliant actor/producer/songwriter/comedian. One of the finest in showbusiness. What a run. RIP Mr. Mull.
Martin Mull, the absolute best sit down comic.

Best heckler management of all time...
That man was a genius.
This guy was the man. That was back in the day, when people could actually have fun.
I had forgotten what a good guitar player and singer Martin is . I remember most of these days ...
Most...but not all. I can relate😎
Thanks for reminding me of "Fernwood Tonight." I watched every episode.

"This is not the first time it's happened." Beautifully dark!
You can keep Robin Williams and Steve Martin, Marty is my favorite comic from the 70s.

I'm sat here just poppin' ludes like its 1978.
Oh my, I had no clue Martin Mull was so talented beyond great comedic talent. Danged!
That's the best Anti-Heckle Routine I've heard so far! "...But the kids love it."

Interesting! Because he did use bits of this on that show, e.g. the dressing room we'll call it that, benefit of the doubt, and a couple more. R.I.P.
Thanks, fun fact
RIP Martin.
Condolences to Martin Mull
Rest in Peace 🕊️😢🥀
You're sending condolences to the deceased?
I had forgotten how wonderful he was.
I love this man!
Rest In Peace....Martin
Of all the great comedians who appeared on The Aristrocats, you told it THE BEST! ABSOLUTELY A GEM
This was filmed the year after he did the movie "FM"
Will always remember him for his Fabulous Furniture. Loved the Bottleneck Blues song with the baby bottle (born on the Lake Erie delta).
That heckler takedown! Like an effing surgeon... BAM!!!
He did a live appearence at a club called Salt in Newport RI in this era and he appeared with a CB radio mounted on his guitar, stopping mid song to chat on the CB.

He's always been a hoot. I saw him back around 1980 with Steve Martin and Robin Williams. Mull stood out that night--says a LOT!
I saw him on this tour in Louisville... rapier wit and musical chops.
THE MOST UNDER APPRECIATED Artist of the 20th/21st centuries!

Great in Two and a Half !
He was hilarious. It was exciting when he appeared on the scene.
"Rainbow signs!" 1979!
Fantastic man. Rip Martin Mull
never forget: Marty always delivered an hour of "NO NEIL YOUNG MUSIC"!
Always had the impression that he was deeply witty & funny but didn't catch him until late in his career. This absolutely confirms my guess.
