Actually, it's not ahead of its time, it's completely of its time. That's what makes it so great...😀 the 197os were unique. Post sexual revolution and pre-political correctness. Interesting era.
It took me a minute to recognize Jim Varney as the daredevil. And Debbie Dunbar is hot! Thanks for posting this classic and cult show. It really deserves to be seen by a huge audience, some of whom might actually get it and the jokes.
Hi everyone :) Wow thank you SO much for sharing this. For some reason, after so many years have gone by, Barth Gimble and Fernwood Tonight came into my mind tonight. I LOVED Fernwood Tonight and seeing this reminded me why. What a classic. I used to watch it with my big brother Bobby back in the day. We would LAUGH!! Oh my gosh how we’d laugh lol. He looked like Martin Mull and would imitate him Perfectly! Bobby passed away in 2011. I miss him so much and seeing this just brought back more than millions of wonderful memories. I can’t believe how this warmed my heart and reminded me how fun our carefree lives we’re back then. It just made me feel so good and brought happy tears. Thank you again, so much, for sharing.🥰🥲😊😄❤️
Funny the happy face @01:30 is what they use in a Labor Ward for the mother to indicate the level of pain/discomfort she feels leading up to the start of labor.
I don't know in God's name how they kept a straight face during these shows. And the guests never broke character, or giggled. You can actually believe these people are real.
i still have a couple of martin mull albums. they were original and somewhat whimsical and full of satire.he was a good guitarist and had a solid band with him. the albums were some of the only ones i saved, i liked them that much when i gave away my collection of about 300. i saw him once playing at a bar in hudson, massachusetts around 1975.
Martin went to art school at the Museum School, Boston Museum of Fine Arts. As a student he held his “gallery show” in the men’s room, because the powers that be wouldn’t give him gallery space😂
@steveperry1344: I saw Martin perform w/his wing chair & floorlamp, at a small live music club in Harvard Sq, Cambridge, in the early 70s. I think he was the opening act for Jonathan Edwards? A lifetime ago!
Was surprised to see Jim Varney there, in his early days. Reading his bio on Wikipedia, looks like he did a number of bit parts in the late 70's. Then in 1980 started doing his most popular character "Ernest" doing the "hey Vern!" commercials we all knew and loved. Died in 2000 at age 50. Lung cancer. Chain smoker.

I remember this airing with Mary Hartman Mary Hartman.
When comedy was edgy and no political "jokes" (other then a crack about communism). Thanks for posting! When I would watch this show it was on so late I usually zoned out.
Great, great show. RIP Martin Mull. The best villain ever as the wife beater Garth Gimble on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. His performance was disturbing. And then as Garth's narcissistic twin brother Barth on Fernwood 2Night in the summer when MHMH went on hiatus. I was supposed to go to bed at 10:00 p.m. but my mother let me stay up for one more half-hour to see MHMH/F2Night. She had already gone to bed. Well, I sneakily stayed up after MHMH/F2Night to then watch Johnny Carson's monologue. THEN I went to bed.
His brother Garth - also played by Martin Mull - was killed on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman by being shoved in a closet and impaled on an artificial Christmas tree. He came for the funeral - and stayed in Fernwood.
The show shoulda stayed in Fernwood, and let any celebrity (un)lucky enough to stuck in that part of Ohio show up for the occasional appearance. The beauty of 'Fernwood 2Night' was having the local high school principal using 'Debbie Dunbar' for the corporal punishment segment.
Wow.. racist anyone? The world was a very different place back when Fernwood 2 Night and Mary Hartman Mary Hartman were on the air. Martin Mull was definitely one of a kind.
This show was so far ahead of its time. 🔥
True, but because of the political climate could not be aired today.
@@johnopal316 We can watch it here, though. For now.
Actually, it's not ahead of its time, it's completely of its time. That's what makes it so great...😀 the 197os were unique. Post sexual revolution and pre-political correctness. Interesting era.
You got that right!!😂🤣
RIP, Martin Mull. You and the late Fred Willard were incredibly funny together.
I didn't even know until I saw the news just now. I was just watching this for fun. RIP Martin Mull
AND the endlessly talented Jim Varney. RIP
Jerry Hubbard was great as a straight man.
It took me a minute to recognize Jim Varney as the daredevil. And Debbie Dunbar is hot! Thanks for posting this classic and cult show. It really deserves to be seen by a huge audience, some of whom might actually get it and the jokes.

RIP big brother Bobby. It's always nice to remember the great times we have along this journey
i always watched the show and the mary hartman show back in the 70's, lots of laughs.
My mom was in labor with me when this episode broadcasted. This was late night sept 5 1977, i was born 2:57 am Sept 6 1977 ❤😂
She is a brave woman.
If she was watching this show, I'm sure it made her labor easier to bear!
Lol no doubt
Funny the happy face @01:30 is what they use in a Labor Ward for the mother to indicate the level of pain/discomfort she feels leading up to the start of labor.
I'd go to a friend's house and watch this, thought it was so hilarious. Now watching it again after all these years, really cracks me up.
Absolutely brilliant in how subversive it was. The entire happy face bit was genius.
Why this show was never commercially available is a crime.
I had to order it bootlegged from old TV Land VHS recordings

Same here.
I remember staying up late as a kid to watch.
Me too! I think it was Nick at Nite if my failing memory is working.
I don't know in God's name how they kept a straight face during these shows. And the guests never broke character, or giggled. You can actually believe these people are real.
Willard and Mull were incomparable at keeping a straight face. Great combination.

Men men men men.....😂
@@suraya1224 Maybe it was Jonathan Swift's in Harvard Sq. I saw Fred Willard there 1978-ish.
The dancer/singer on the right is Valerie Miller. Incredibly talented, and a wonderful person.
I know I have a warped strange sense of humor...I loved this show..I got it...oh the Farah fawcett hair do.. very popular at the time.... great show.
"What happens after death?" - Martin at 19:50.
RIP Martin Mull.
RIP Fred Willard.
Girls were so hot in 1977.
Oh man, thank you for putting these up
Tommy Tedesco sighting! You can hear him too, herein there ;D
This was great... I used to come home and watch the show with a buzz on back in the '70s. This clip has three outstanding comedians I always liked.
If you want to watch other episodes, go to archive.org/details/ferbwood2night where I found them.
You can’t beat that opening audience shot.
Death is just constant little chores around the house. Hahaha. 😂

I remember this airing with Mary Hartman Mary Hartman.
My favorite part was Debbie’s blank look on the third “Baby, baby”…forgetting the words!
Great to find this. I remember watching this back in the day. Great humor. RIP Martin Mull.
Jim Varney was very funny. He along with Martin and Fred are wonderful.
Millennials and Gen Z won't get this. This is classic
💥BOOMER💥 Humour.
Gen X grew up with this as our cultural data set.
Millennial here and I do know who this is and the humor. You forget how old we are.
I’m Gen X, and I get most of it.
If by Boomer humor, you mean racist jokes, then I agree with you

The Happy Face bid
was pure genius.
Kathy McCullen was Debbie Dunbar.
Rest In Peace Martin Mull
great happyface bit
Sammy Davis was brutal. The One dot
This is hysterical
Debbie has such a beautiful face.
The crowd always looked people at TV wrestling studio. R.I.P. funny man
A great show. Used to watch with my Mom. I miss you Mom.
This is how I get my news. RIP Martin.
Wow Jim Varney. Loved him. 😂
I loved that show.
Thanks for posting this, really enjoyed it !
I remember being baffled by this show as a teenager; along with Soap and Mary Hartman. No wonder I turned out so weird.🤪
Forgot about this show.
I wish they would reshow the old Mary Hartman Mary Hartman. No one has streamed it
I would just buy the DVD. Simple as that
Is that Jim Varney from Ernest fame?
Yepa
Can you post the one where the town vegetarian confesses that "the body craves burgers"?
I watched this show. The battery car is hilarious
3:34 try to do that today and a DA will charge you. Land of the free 🌈
"Barth" was the twin brother of "Garth", on the Mary Hartman show, of which Fernwood was a fantastic spin-off, w/ a well deserved cult following. .
Is that a 70s suit or what? Those pointy shirt collars.
Leisure suits!
I miss the 70s …goofy but more innocent time
RIP Mr. Mull
I watched this episode when it first aired.
He would crack me up!
Loved watching it stoned
RIP Fred and Martin
I just watched it totally unstoned and it was still pretty funny.
I'm 73 and have watched Fernwood stoned, sober and it is always hilarious!@@jerrybaustian5256
The guy who actually designed the happy face got $475 for it. That’s it.
☹
That's probably $3K, today.
the first emoji🙂
I wonder why Martin Mull wasn't in the Christopher Guest movies?

This is so tasteless, it’s great!
It that Debralee Scott (Hotsy Totsy)as one of the singers??
The guitar player brought me here.
What happens after death, Barth?
RIP Mr. Mull. So sad. Brilliant comedian. 😢😢
RIP Martin - I loved his comedy!!!
Have a nice day. Was obviously started by Forrest Gump, why did they not give him credit?
jim varney.
First saw Marty at the cellar door in DC. We laffed our asses off at his silly nest then he’d play more nonsense on the guitar
Paving the way for Michael Scott

Lieutenant Leonard could give some advice to Biden . . .
I wonder how much was improvisation, and how much scripted?
So racist but wonderful
Was that ERNEST?
Yes, that’s him
Wow.. racist anyone? The world was a very different place back when Fernwood 2 Night and Mary Hartman Mary Hartman were on the air. Martin Mull was definitely one of a kind.
This vulgar racist bit is hilarious. Jeez just laugh sheeple
There's no way millennials or GenZers could handle this type of humor.
