“Two cigarettes from the package gone, you must of thought about it just that long”. Gets me every time.
Just found this song today and it’s on repeat. That line, in particular, is a gut punch.
I think this was about his wife. So sad.
this song should be regarded as one of his best of all time...
and that is REALLY saying something!

Profound song, catches one deep in the soul. Another masterpiece by John. I'd love to see what's going on in Lyle's mind as he listens to this masterpiece. Perhaps the same thing as a lot of us, being touched deeply.

I love all the videos of John with Lyle co-starring. He always looks so deep in thought or reflection. It looks like respectful admiration.

I’ve read that the “two cigarettes gone” line is a reference to his wife’s suicide; if true, that’s a nice little nod to her
@@petemaloney9783 the whole song is about the period after her death and his move from California to Nashville as a result of needing a fresh start. that line the most obvious reference though
Love his playing and songwriting, been listening to him since he first broke out in the vibrant music club scene in early-1980s Los Angeles as an 'angry young man' (anyone remember 'Cop Party'?), later 'escaping' California for Nashville. One thing I notice here is he plays the rhythem melody on the lower strings and complements it with notes on the higher strings, which is the opposite of most guitar playing.
Such a great song lyle is just sitting there takin it all in.

I saw John Hiatt 5-6 times but the first two times I saw him at IUP with Tom McIntosh in the student lounge which wasn't very big for $12. We knew he was going to be special.
