    I saw this film as a child in the 60s and this scene left me with a lifelong love of English folk music.

    I first saw Far From The Madding Crowd when I was 12 yrs old..& it had such a HUGE & LASTING impact on me! It was where I first discovered Julie Christie..Alan Bates.. Peter Finch..& Terrence Stamp ..with Julie Christie becoming one of my all-time favorite actresses. It also was where I first discovered Thomas Hardy..who has been my all-time favorite author. And it also was where I first discovered the BEAUTIFUL Old English countryside..Old English folk music..& the Old English way of life that was portrayed in the film..all of which I have dreamed about & loved throughout my entire life! It’s amazing that a film could leave such a CAPTIVATING & LASTING impression on someone at such a young age. But that film has left a life-long impression on me that has never faded away!!!

      There was a written account of it in London in 1689,but it was mostly collected from the South of England where the Nightingales were found,hence it’s called ‘the nightingale’(or sometimes ‘the bold grenadier’)!

      @@Bella-fz9fyIn Far From The Madding Crowd..besides the song “Bushes and Briars”there is another song in the film called “The Bold Grenadier” which is not the same song as “Bushes and Briars”. If u watch the film again..u’ll hear both songs being sung by different singers & that they are 2 different songs.

    This is one of my favourite scenes of this movie. Thanks so much for posting! I absolutely loved Julie's singing.
    Somehow, I remember her voice being a little softer; but that was probably from watching a grainy, poorer-quality VHS copy on television.
    Gotta love those traditional Old British/Celtic songs and how this movie literally reincarnates Victorian-era Wessex.

    @SirBounder Thomas Hardy is a brilliant writer. He is lyrical,with a deep sympathy for the countryside and its characters, the time, and in creating atmosphere. It's a story about the complications of love and the decisions people make in their lives and the consequences but there's so much more to enjoy in every detail of it, the scenery, and all the characters. I suppose shallow sensibilites attuned to heavily plotted action thrillers wouldn't appreciate it, but there are stil plenty who do.

    This is in reply to a comment you made two years ago, but I have to say I agree with you. I listened to Isla Cameron's version and it is quite different from this version. I also agree that this singing voice is such a close match to Julie Christie's speaking voice that it likely is Julie singing here. I'm going to see if I can find her singing anything else, just because I'm so impressed with the way she sings this. She almost has too much talent and beauty for one human being!

  • @heliotropezzz333
    @heliotropezzz333 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @AllusCats Surely the"original soundtrack" means the soundtrack from the film (as in the film), and so it was Isla Cameron's voice, as also stated in the IMDb film site.

    Regardless... I was raised on Shirley & Julie Collins.... my 1st proper girlfriend was a close relative of theirs... and the first time I stayed with them was speeding through Suffolk in a Citroen 2CV as it went past 10,000 miles on the clock!!

    The love angle is similar to Ryan's Daughter. In Madding Crowd Bathsheba Everdene consumes the adoration of three competing lovers and it can only end in tragedy. In Ryan's Daughter three men are besotted with Rosie (Sarah Miles) - the village school teacher (Robert Mitchum), the village priest (Trevor Howard) and the British soldier (Christopher Jones) and it can only end in tragedy also. BTW the link between Julie Christie and Sarah Miles is David Lean . . .

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You'd have to say that Ryan's daughter is similar to this, not the other way around as this was based on a novel by Thomas Hardy written in the 19th century.

    @SirBounder It's still some of the best literature. If we were only exposed to things we think we would like ,it would be a narrow education. We can discover things by being exposed to them through education and it stretches people. We can learn to appreciate and like new things - though it does not work for everyone.

    @AllusCats Can you tell the difference between Isla Cameron's voice and Julie Christie's? Isla may have been chosen because of the similarity of the voices. I can't see the point of having a different person for the album only, who is less well know and less likely to sell the album. I would think the only sure way of knowing is to read the film credits.
