Thank you Terence Stamp. The best English film of all time. Lovingly filmed. Haunting music. Pretty true to the novel, I think.

The remake didn't come near the original - 'Far from The Madding Crowd' - is and will be for all time....universal and untouchable. Thank god for Stamp and that phenomenal cast!

I've only just discovered this interview - thank you! How timelessly elegant, charming and charismatic Terence is, and how easy to listen to. He was right about the remake, not a patch on the original and never a chance ( in my view) it would come anywhere close. To this day ''Madding Crowd'' is in my top five films, if not the very top. The film turned me on to Hardy, which influenced my reading for GCSEs. I didn't do so badly, which I attribute to Terence, his portrayal of Troy (the best) the superb cast and crew - bloody marvellous. My admiration for him continues to this day. A beautiful and noble soul.

Also in my top few films. So beautifully done, so moving, such lovely old rural England, such love and passion. ALL the cast were stunning, especially the main four, and how could a man not fall in love with Bathsheba? Still awed by Julie: "The Fast Lady", "Darling", "Dr Zhivago" and "Far From ..." in just a few years - and an Oscar. She was and remains awesome.

This is a treat. He looks so cool. I’ve always loved the original Far from the Madding Crowd movie, it made me fall in love with Dorset, Maiden Castle, Hardy & last but not least, beautiful Julie Christie.
The sword scene on Maiden Castle is for me one of cinema’s most fabulous sequences, Nic Roeg was a genius. My sword master at drama school, the much missed Derek Ware was sword master here & appears in the movie as his best man. Derek helped me hugely with confidence with a sword so if anyone could help you fight with your right hand when you were left handed it was him. Wonderful memories. x

It was fascinating to see the ever youthful and articulate Terence Stamp interviewed in a public space in London.I was 16 in 1966 and had never heard of Thomas Hardy. My interests largely revolved around being a mod and fan of the superb Small Faces. But one of the books for my GCE Eng.Lit.was "Far from the Madding Crowd",and I truly loved the wonderful rural idyll that Hardy created, and the excellent characters that he captured so well in his work. The film was an honest representation of the Hardy novel and the locations were to die for.One of my favourite film locations in the world can be viewed from the cafe at the top of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury with a pot of tea for two ,imagining Sargeant Troy and his men riding down that cobbled street. It is also used with Fanny Robin approaching the workhouse and her final demise.
I have seen the new film, and it pales into insignificance by the side of this 1960's classic.Terence Stamp is so right in suggesting that some remakes of classics are really on a hiding to nothing if the original was so definitive as the 1960's version was.It was interesting also to hear that John Schlesinger did not want Terence Stamp for the role. What is not revealed is what Schlesinger thought of the final film cut with Stamp in the role.Surely he must have been pleased! For me it is probably the best film representation of any of the Hardy novels. This is because of of Frederick Raphael's wonderful screenplay, the carefully chosen locations, the doyen of British actors ,great direction, and the wonderfully evocative music by Richard Rodney Bennett.

Culturally and creatively, this country has never been worse off. For a variety of reasons.
Even during times of famine, plague, pestilence and war, the arts in the UK ALWAYS thrived and ALWAYS strived for beauty and greatness. The output now is dreadful...truly dreadful.

Don't worry, Terrence - the remake wasn't a patch on the version you were in - not only for your own performance, but as you said - all the actors were the cream of the crop. I saw the new one last night on TV, and was disappointed with it. That's why I'm on TH-cam now - to reaffirm what I thought. The new one was well enough acted, I thought, though several of the actors - and Troy in particular - were less believable. In particular, when Troy says his piece about Fanny Robin -"This woman, dead as she is ..." sounded as if he was a schoolboy reciting a passage that had been learned by rote. And the direction was definitely lacking. I'm just busy downloading the audio book so I can listen to it while I'm using my eyes and hands - I have never read it.

Absolutely right Mike, for those who never saw the 60s film they might like the remake but it was not a patch on the former. It was a crescendo of a great story, director, producer and a sensationally talented cast.

Terrance said one thing in the movie that rings true. Something like, "a woman like you can do more damage than they can conceivably imagine."

I thought the swordplay scene was ludicrously over the top but still effective. I disagree with Stamp that the rest of the filming was 'ponderous'. I'm sure it was meant to reflect the pace of the countryside and the times it was set in and it allowed time to enjoy every scene and every detail.

very charming man.....he comes across as being very authentic...as a person I mean. He was perfect in "Far From The Madding Crowd'...it was a great performance by him, he held his own with Peter Finch and Alan Bates, his persona totally complimented the other main actors in the film. I did go to a test screening of the 2015 remake of the movie which was absolutely terrible I have to say, not just because it was so inferior to the original version...it was just not very good at all....stick to the Terry Stamp version if you are looking to watch the film for the first time.

A classic! The film AND the actor! The only reason I suspect that Schlesinger wanted Voight (`a blonde`..well, sort of) is because of Stamp`s East London accent. He has since ceased to echo the `cockney` but in this film it is all too audible. Slightly embarrassing and probably grist for caricature. But WTH! Voight`s louche physique would never cut it the way Stamp does.

I'm afraid I have to agree about the more recent version, which, for whatever reason, aimed to make a claim on Schlesinger's iconic, if lesser known, classic of the 60s. For starters, why try to improve on the near immoral beauty of Ms. Christie, Mr. Bates, and Mr. Stamp? And, even as a younger lad, Stamp's famous sword scene was clear to me in its subtext of the eros of violence, the violence of eros, and a kind of sociopathy behind both. Vinterberg's very forced, literal approach in the more recent version was not only disappointing, but almost insulting to the viewer, and something of a letdown from someone still basking in the hubris of 'The Celebration' and the fanciful intellectual (but often inadvertently aesthetically suffocating) conceits of Dogma 95.
