I really respect Thai women. I remember my girlfriend's roommate woman bought chocolates to the market workers just to wish happy Valentine's day. I was really amazed because they didn't know each others but yet she wanted to make workers happy, and put smile on their faces. Much love to Thai people

We do what we can to make life a little easier for mum.
She is very independent and never asks for anything. She always says "why did you buy that, you shouldn't waste your money"
You can understand why Ta is to great, because her mum is also.

That was an interesting video of life in the villages of Northern Thailand.
Normal is to have two rices; sticky rice and jasmin rice.
75% eaten is sticky rice in the north.

Hi brad and ta this is a great video of tas mums home ,some people would turn up their noses at living in a small village but i want them to listen ,what do you hear silence no cars ,buses ,horns just a cockeral crowing in the background .I understand that young people move away for employment but if they all go who will harvest the rice when the older ones cant anymore ? Tas cousins house is great he must be very proud of it and his efforts ,chon has talked about building a house but it the land that costs and if you do not own any there is a big chunk of money more than the house costs to build ,being a carpenter by trade i love the wooden doors some can have very intricate designs on them ,the bucket on good on hot days for a shower anyway great video take care .

The land in Ban Tham is cheap, you can buy an old house on a block of land for 300,000 baht. ;-)

Hi brad and ta , chon showed me a seat that she was thinking of buying a wooden type as seen in most thai homes, the grain and coloring in the timber is magnificent i will never let her sell it, they have a gum there called a rainbow gum and the grain is amazing to see all different colors Problem is you cant do any work on your own home or they kick you out of the kingdom against the law protected industries i think it is called must be a way around it .

The first time we visited my parents house was a culture shock to my husband as he never realized standards were so low and my family have always worked and supported themselves. He went straight out and bought a toilet a shower and heater a sink and some tiles and gave them to papa to change from the old Thai style to a modern bathroom. When we went back upcountry I found my son standing crouched up on top like it was still the old Thai style. He says he understands now but keeps the door locked Ha Ha!! He has now built us a farang style house and Mum's smiling at him a lot...thinks she wants one too

How long will the bags of rice in the shed last before they go bad?

Great video Brad and Ta. Thanks for the tour of both Ta's and her cousin's house. I can't believe you can build a quality house like her cousin's for just under $30,000 AUD (excluding land of course). Most people in Sydney would spend more buying a car (same in Bangkok I guess). I know Bangkok is way more expensive than Ta's village but Sydney's property market is crazy (median house price is just over $1.1 million and you won't get much for that or even close to the city). P.S. I'm sure that cat at 4:39 was up some kind of mischief, walking around the village like it owns the place :)

Yes, it's certainly a different World.
There was a house for sale not far from Ta's mum for 300,000 baht (under AUS$12,000 for house & land), but we didn't get a chance to go and have a look at it. Land is very cheap in that area.
      Thanks for watching.

Your videos with your lovely wife have made me decide to make an extended visit to Thailand starting next week with a view to seeing if I can make a life there too.
You were so lucky to meet the right woman.
I would ask for more advice from you - but not on this open forum.
    Many Thanks - Frank.

Sticky rice as far as I know is called blue rose type rice- the kind my mother buys by the brand named Botan and its also know as short grain rice - Long grain rice are like Mahatma Brand Rice- short grain can be made for rice pudding breaks down very mushy, soupy like and long grain no matter how much water you put does not break down like short grain, that's the kind used for making Spanish Rice. Now i'm hungry for rice

    (this is my work mail(
ive been in country thai houses and have always liked them. my house here in my country is similar as my husband is thai and treats the house the same way. it drives my family and friends crazy as here people are very 'house proud' and the interior design /cleanliness and 'matchingness' are very important here. and ther e is a real separation of outdoors and indoors here as well, although plants are used as decor, and thais dont seem to use plants indoors as much.
but here people liek very 'not messy' houses, and find this thai upcountry style messy and disortanized.
a fascinating anthropology of the cultural use and consideration of what makes a home, a home.

Do they pay water and sewage, and garbage or refuge. Like USA, also electricity, and gas for cooking?

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      G'Day
Council / Government fees (sewerage, garbage collection, etc) 100 baht (US$3.15) Per YEAR.
Mum pays a separate water and electricity bill each month.
Electricity - average 140 baht (US$4.40). The house doesn't have air conditioning.
      Water - average 15 baht (US$0.47).
Gas is only by the bottle in Thailand and is only for cooking. Cost 400 baht (US$12.60) and lasts for over 6 months.
It's so cheap to live upcountry in Thailand.
      Thanks for your question.

She just bought the sheet at the local market to hang & keep the sun out of the house. She had no idea that it was a flag.

Thank you for the nice tour ! Question for you.......I know Thailand has poisonous snakes, Are they ever an issue around the home in these rural areas ? Everybody seems to be walking around kind of carefree, and with bushes and things around the yard I was curious if anybody has a problem at times with that. Love your videos ! Steve,

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'Day Steve
You would be more likely to have a problem with a snake in your home in a built up area like Bangkok then you would upcountry. There's plenty of room for the snakes to live around the farms and in the mountains with their natural food source and so they would seldom come into the built up area of the village.
      Thanks for your question.
      Take care

I do wonder about the replacing of traditional Thai houses on stilts with block homes on concrete. The more modern houses are probably stronger in heavy winds, but more prone to flooding. You see much the same change in northern Australia.

What a great way of life and lovely homes, I would swap a continuous cockerel crying for the sounds of sirens I hear all day long..... simple fresh food instead of confusing g.m food.......and having to worry about lizards coming through the letterbox instead of bills and demands and people trying to sell you crap....... real community spirit..........who knows in that environment you might even end up feeling like your living instead of just existing..... I dream of such a life!
