  • It’s our great pleasure to present to you 5 wooden houses in the village of Ban Tham in Northern Thailand.
    The homes range in age from “still under construction”, all the way up to over 30 years old. Regardless of the age of the home, they are all incredibly beautiful.
    We hope that you enjoyed watching this video.
    Please put any questions that you might have in the comments section below. I will do my best to answer as quickly and as accurately as possible.

    Really enjoyed the tours. Thanks. Surprised at all the western style toilets. I actually liked the porcelin squat toilets when I was there in the 90s

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'Day
      The modern style of toilet is more hygenice and much easier for older people to use than the squat toilets.
      I doubt that you would even be able to find anywhere to buy a new squat toilet in Thailand anymore, as they have stopped manufacturing them here. Apparently wholesalers from Lao and Myanmar rushed to buy the remaining stock for fear that they couldn't supply their own customers.

    great video showing the real life in Thailand most don't see, I love seeing Thailand away from the tourist places. It also shows how thai families become isolated because of moving for work. I wonder about your titles though, how do the search filters work on youtube? I imagine you'd get more traffic if the title was a bit more generic about rural or real thailand etc. Sure you know best keep up the good work.

      I believe that when you type in what you want to search for, TH-cam searches for the words in the title, the description and for the tags that I add in the background when I upload the video. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'Day
      The roofs have eaves and the louvred window shutters are angled and so the storm would have to be accompanied by some pretty strong winds for rain to get in.
      Doesn't matter where you live, if an insect wants to get in, he's going to get in. 555

    Wonderful informative video again. The wooden houses and the timber is so cheap and those huge thick tree trunks are so amazing.Well I think that the Thai live outside most of the time the indoors is not so important for them as for us northerners, we want it cosier.

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'Day Fransje
      Yes, the wooden houses are comparatively cheap when viewed with farang eyes, but they are quite expensive if you compare them to building a more modern Thai house on the same block of land.
      Only Thais that have a real passion for traditional homes would invest the time and money into building a wooden house.
      Have a great day.

    Gday brad and ta ,those timber homes are very nice and it is reflected in th price how scarce timber is becoming .These thai homes are suited to the climate where you have flow through ventilation . The way ta treats you is how chon treats me like a little boy or old man 5555 watch your step ,hold my hand crossing the road hurry hurry now 5555 could be worse . Thai what ? oh&s 555555555555 the things ive seen make me cringe thinking about what could go wrong , at least these homes have a soul not just a square box like new constructions where everything is straight lines flat roofs ect great video and some lovely houses take care .

    Another great vlog, thanks guys, thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. Yes, timber is expensive in Thailand and they recycle all timber as most of the trees cut down. When i lived in issan an old school house was pulled down and i was amazed the timber sold for around $3000 - a LOT of money in Thailand... I think i saw you say Ban Tham is near Phayao? If so, i love that place and stayed there a few weeks -lovely lake and foreshore and laid back - watching your videos makes me want to book a flight back!! Cheers

    Hi Brad and Ta, Thanks for such an interesting view of these beautiful wood homes. They look very open on the ground floor. Is crime not an issue there? Also are the winters so mild they don't need heat? Take care.

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'Day
      Things that would be left out in the open wouldn't normally be of great monetary value. Plus most people have a dog or 2 which will sound the alarm if there are intruders.
      The winters are comparatively cold for Thailand, but average low temps of 10 or 12* Celsius isn't going to cause frostbite. 55
      They will quite often just start a fire outside for warmth and just add an extra couple of blankets when they go to bed.
      I don't think that I've seen any split system air conditioners for sale in Thailand that can also be used for heating, they're all cooling only.
      Thanks for your questions.
      Take care
      Brad & Ta

    Another SUPER video! VERY well done!
    You and Ta continue to produce quality videos for TH-cam.
    I found it fun to watch and very informative!
    I really like your featuring more and more of Ta's hosting in your videos.
    She's just great-- and is obviously getting a lot more comfortable in front of your camera!
    I do have a few questions:
    Why do Thai's not seem to favor bathtubs? Only in your videos of modern apartments and condos are the bathrooms Westernized, everywhere else, the traditional Thai bathroom is the norm. I ask because I should think the luxury of the
    bathtub, as well as not having to tile (and pay for) an entire room to seal it against water-- would be appealing. Plus, I
    should think that cleaning a Western bathroom with a tub and less tile, would be a lot easier than having to wipe down
    and clean an entire Thai bathroom.
    I realize that some of the homes in the video were under construction, but even in your some of your other videos showing completed homes, like Ta's family home, I don't see screens and only occasionally mosquito netting over beds.
    Plus, given the way Thai homes have so much openness to the outside, aren't insects, snakes and possibly other animals entering the home and hanging out in closets, cubbards, and around lighting fixtures, an issue?!
    (...And, from what little I know, aren't tropical insects and spiders particularly large and potentially dangerous?)
    Finally, and I realize you may not be able to answer this, but why don't Thai electricians seem to run the wires on the inside of walls very much? I ask because the exposed wires, for me, take away from the aesthetics of rooms and hallways.
    Mark

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      G'Day Mark
      The average Thai will shower both morning and evening and wouldn't care to take the time to soak in a tub. It would only be the wealthy who would choose to install a bath in a "farang style" bathroom. It's for this reason that if you see baths for sale in a showroom, many of them will also double as a spa bath / Jacuzzi.
      You can get screens for the windows, but like many things when you buy a new house, they don't come as standard. 55
      However I doubt that anyone would be putting screens on the windows of a wooden house.
      The likelihood of animals wanting to take up residence in your home would be higher in the city where there is more garbage and therefore potential food to attract them and also where there is less natural habitat for them to live.
      If you're worried about dangerous snakes, spiders, etc, don't go to Australia.
      www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/wildlife/2013/03/australias-dangerous-animals-the-top-30/
      Most older Thai homes don't have an internal wall cavity to run electrical wires, they are constructed from either solid brick or solid concrete. It's only on more modern builds where they make provision to run the wires internally.
      Thanks for your questions.
      Take care
      Brad & Ta

    • @Solstice4MNM
      @Solstice4MNM 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for responding, Brad!
      I had seen prior articles about the dangers of animals and insects found in Australia-- and shuddered accordingly. I appreciate the link however-- there were a few more worrisome Australian inhabitants that I had heard of before!
      You Aussies are hardy souls to brave the likes of a lot of those animals, spiders and such!
      I saw the wooden shutters and admired them, but I remain puzzled as to why screens, that would provide air flow would not be put on wooden houses. Aesthetics and tradition?
      Leaving aside animals like snakes, is it because many Thai bedrooms are on the second story, that screens aren't necessary?
      Could it be that the majority of flying insects in Thailand don't fly up that high? Just guessing.
      Your answer about the bathtubs was quite surprising!
      I can understand cost being an issue, but I seriously did not expect the time it would take to take a bath to be why bathtubs would not be popular. I gather the Thai people are simply not time-wasters.
      Let me encourage the best couple shirt couple to keep up the great work!
      Mark

    • @OurLifeThai

      Fly screens would not be installed for both the reasons of Aesthetics and Tradition.
      You will find glass windows on some of the older wooden houses, but I'm told that's simply because the owners couldn't afford wooden shutters.

    That was great. I will be staying in one of those wooden style houses for a week in March. So great to see inside one. Curious who will care for the elderly lady if she becomes ill or too old and frail if no family? What is the situation with aged care in Thailand?

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      G'Day Steven
      At the moment Ta's cousin lives across the road from the old lady and they look out for her and take care of her by driving her to Doctors appointments, etc.
      When she becomes to old to live independently, her daughter will most likely return from Bangkok to take care of her full time.
      A Thai family will generally take care of their elderly at home. The majority of Thai people would not be happy to see older people placed in a nursing home. Plus nursing homes would be far too expensive for the average family to afford anyway.

    • @OurLifeThai

      The wood used is extremely robust hardwood and is normally taken from trees that have taken 25 years to grow to an adequate size.
      The timber is also mounted on concrete piers or on concrete foundations, reducing any risk from contact with the soil.
      Ta isn't aware of anyone living in a wooden house in Ban Tham having problems with termites.

    In the north and Isaan most village houses do not have an electric shower. Most houses only have a 15 Amp electric supply so the main fuse would blow. You get used to a cold shower and if you have been working hard in the sun it is quite refreshing.

      At our house near Chiang Rai we were first just using the water straight from the well. Then a bucket with water heated on a small gas stove. Then graduated to a gas heated shower. After moving to another house we kept the gas heated shower and put an electric one in another bathroom. I prefer the gas shower during the few cold months, but during the very hot months the water comes out too hot, even with the gas turned down all the way. If I turned off the gas, the water was too cold for my sensitive body. The electric one worked best then.

    • @edletts2219

      What I have is a gas shower heater box on the wall.It is a little bigger than the electric shower heater. It could be used to heat water for a bath tub, because it has a second set of gas burners inside. I bought it at a regular appliance store that had an assortment of refrigerators, washing machines, gas and electric shower heaters and TVs. There is a house with some farangs from Europe in the next village over. Once in a long while I see one of them at the marketplace, but I've never spoken to them. Someone was telling me that they had a regular large water heater at their house, and that's the only one I've heard of around here, and I can't remember why the subject came up. If there is a Home-Pro, or something similar in your area they might be able to order you the kind of water heater you want. The closest thing I have to a bath tub is a vinyl wadding pool I fill with water when the weather is really hot.

      The wood used is Teak, considered by many to be perhaps the strongest wood in the World. It is very slow growing and is resistant to the majority of insect pests.
      A tree will be allowed to grow for 20 - 25 years before it is cut down. They are a protected species In Thailand, so even if the tree is grown on a plantation on your own land, you still require government approval prior to it being cut down.

    I have visited Thailand many times and during my stay in many cities of Thailand, I visited all the important land marks of Thailand, although visits are usually very interesting but feeling is always very touristy and somewhat artificial. What type of Thailand you are showing to us, is different from that famous monuments with a very heavy commercial feeling. Most of the time you are showing rural and village side of Thailand, that I find very interesting and original. I also feel that in stead of living in Bangkok for may be one week, we can live in a rural area close to Bangkok for one month in the same cost and feel more fresh and original. As a tourist, my only issue is food, as being Muslim, we don't eat pork or any thing associated with pig. I wish if you can put some light and your opinion on the village living for a Muslim tourist for a fortnight with food restriction but decent living.

    One of the problems with teak houses is that they require a lot of maintenance due to termites, and other insects the chew their way through the wood. Just like owning a boat. They do withstand an earthquake better than the cement and brick houses.

    • @OurLifeThai
      @OurLifeThai  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G'Day Ed
      The village has a great number of teak houses that are 20, 30 and even 40 plus years old. A lot of effort is taken during construction to reduce the likelihood of termite infestation, coupled with teak's natural resilience.
      We're not aware of there being any significant issues concerning termites in the village.
      It's far more likely that termites in Thailand would attack anything that's made from wood within a house constructed of brick and concrete. An issue we've had personal experience with. :-(
