Just wanted to say that thanks to this channel I got good info. Our toy poodle had Atlanto instability. She had shooting pains and trouble walking and looking to one side. Permanent sedation which meant she was in a bad place. Got her fixed up in the Netherlands where I live by one of our best dog surgeons and the result was a happy dog with no pain. Some minor residual symptoms like an asymmetrical stride, and her leg pulling up. The cost was worth every cent 😊
This was a most informative seminar as I’ve just become a owner of a 3 year old puppy mill bitch surrendered to a rescue along with two other small breed dogs. Within the past 2 1/2 months learning about cavaliers from rescue without avail as to certain things exhibited as to her “quirky” obsessions. These symptoms as I see them now is probably CM/SM. Our Veteranary appointment is next week. I’d like to thank this Doctor for his kindness to educate all that are looking for information on for helping their pets. Sincerely Sylvia
A very informative lecture that I have shared with other cavalier king charles spaniel owners. Sadly, I owned a cavalier king charles spaniel that had IVVD and SM (diagnosed and treated by Dr. Michael Podell). The medical costs related to CM and IVDD were around $13K. Also, with all due respect, a cavvie/cavi is a South American rodent. Thank you.
Yes, people seem to get upset with any neurologist who says “cavi”. We call dachshunds “doxies” and French bulldogs “Frenchies” and Labrador retrievers “Labs”. Seems to mainly upset cavalier King Charles spaniel people. While I like to be as accurate as possible in my terminology, certain abbreviated names are common.
People need to remember that whole reason we have dogs in the first place was for human benefit. So yeah, part of the whole point of owning a pet is for human sake. Is there a point where we go from using pets and being cruel to pets, absolutely. This isn’t it. As long as this owner went to a responsible groomer that used safe practices and use pet safe dye, then there is no harm here. This is probably an even better option than an actually physical costume made of clothes. This is the dogs own body, it doesn’t interfere with the dogs body like clothes would. This is not a tattoo, this will not permanently alter the dog’s physical appearance. “The dog doesn’t want to look like that” Stop projecting human thoughts on to an animal. The dog doesn’t care what it looks like. All the dog knows is that its buddy (owner) is happy, it is getting treats, so it is happy. The dog does not appear to be in any distress so stop crying cruelty or sad where there is none. This appears to be a poodle breed or mix or some kind, would these same people be upset over a cut like this -> 🐩. Same difference, it’s just a fancy cut that serves no purpose other than human enjoyment. If the dog is acting happy and is not showing any signs of distress, then let the dog just be happy. What we should be focusing our attention on is real issues that society just seems to ignore. Like clothing, clothing is fine within reason, if the dog obviously doesn’t care about clothes and the clothes are not posing a threat to the animal then leave it alone. Oh well the animal is being used for human enjoyment that sorta the point like I said earlier, as long as it’s not being cruel. Cruel would be if the animal is in obvious distress and discomfort over the clothes and the human continues to ignore the animals complaints. I can understand that their might be an adjustment period to anything new but within reason, if it’s obvious that the animal is not happy and shows no signs of ever being happy in the clothes, then stop trying to clothes the poor animal. If your pet isn’t bothered by clothes then other people need to mind their own business. Feel free to ask questions of express concerns if you notice something dangerous about the clothes even feel free to have your own opinion about whether you should or shouldn’t clothes animals but leave that to practice on your own animals. If animal is in distress = bad, if animal isn’t bothered or in danger = then don’t bother the owner. I know even my own opinion goes against popular opinions like Jackson Galaxy and his stance with cats and clothes. And I agree that cats more often than dogs, do not like to wear clothes. Don’t put clothes on a cat that is distressed by it. Cats and other animals don’t really need clothes. They have fur. They regulate their own body heat with their fur. There are exceptions like with hairless breeds that need protection from the sun. But if some owner decides to clothes the pet, cat, dog, etc., and the pet is not bothered then leave the owner alone. I don’t care that cats typically don’t want to be clothes and dressed up if someone has a cat that actually doesn’t mind and isn’t in distressed, stop making the owner feel guilty over how they enjoy spending time with their pet. I’ve met a chicken that the owner has a whole Instagram account for and they occasionally dress up the chicken, don’t see too many comments of people complaining about someone dressing up a chicken. And one of my best friends got a cat who is so chill and relax and she sometimes put him in a hoodie and I am not ashamed to say he looks freakin adorable in it and he doesn’t seem or act like he has a single care in the world about it. She doesn’t keep him in it all day. It just a way she enjoy spending time with her cat and it makes her happy. I’m not taking that away because an expert like Jackson Galaxy says we should clothes cat. I agree with the idea in general that it’s not generally a good idea but every cat is different and special. Declawing cats is a huge no no. That’s not the same thing. That a permanent alteration that is torturing to the cats not just during and immediately after but for the rest of the cat’s life. It’s not declawing it’s like de-toeing. They remove half of the cat’s toe. There’s also emotional/mental damage for a species that instinctively uses claws for survival. Mind boggling that anyone thought this was okay and that there are places that continue to do this and people that have no idea how terrible this process is. And speaking of grooming, another thing we could talk about is irresponsible owners not getting their pets trained early with a groomer. If you got a dog and it needs to be groomed then you need to get that dog used to a groomer as soon as possible so that the experience is not stressful on the dog later and not dangerous to the groomer. Talk to a groomer about when to start a schedule with your puppy. I understand that this might not have been up to you if you adopted an older dog, but for those that get puppies, this is something to think about that no one ever does. I know many people are much more aware of puppy mills and it being bad but another thing that seems to get ignored is the fact that we are breeding these dogs to health problems and death. That a heck of a lot more damaging and cruel than a dog getting a haircut and some dye on it. “But pugs are cute people love pugs” The poor dogs can’t breathe and have serious respiratory problems in the name of cuteness. Why aren’t we upset about that. The poor King Charles spaniel has been breed to the point that their skulls are too small for the brains. This isn’t a small dog problem, these are problems that are happening with almost every “purebred” breed that has been around for a long while. German Shepards are genetically predisposed to hip dysplasia due to these long standing breeding standards. Why on Earth do we have breeding standards that literally lead to worsening health conditions. Half of these breeds did not look like how they do now just a century ago.
My dog had a MRI scan that revealed he has chiari malformation and invertebral disk disease. What does his future hold, he’s only 6 years old, is it likely he will need surgery?
Hello. We are so sorry to hear your pet is going through this. Unfortunately, in order to give clinical advice, one of our Neurologists would need to evaluate your pet through a consultation. At that time, treatment options and recovery could be discussed. We are here for you if you need us. To find a location near you visit us online at sevneurology.com.
