    Today, we unbox the Pit Boss 3 Series Vertical Pellet Smoker. We also show you some of the assembly and our first cook on the Pit Boss 3 Series. This is the Pit Boss Copperhead version which looks really nice!
    Pit Boss also makes a 5 Series and a 7 Series which are larger units and this unboxing and first cook gives you a general idea of of what to expect across the vertical pellet smoker lineup.
    I've owned several smokers in my life and this is without a question, the best one I've had the pleasure to cook on which is why I am suggesting this as a fantastic Fathers Day gift!

      Weekend Warrior BBQ just got one of these as a gift. New to smoking.
      When cooking meat does the smoker automatically load pellets to it’s needed amount through out the cook? Or manually prime as needed?

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ
      @WeekendWarriorBBQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Ryan! That is an awesome gift. Yeah, the smoker will load them in as needed. Just set the dial and you are good to go.

    • @ryanrichard9997
      @ryanrichard9997 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Weekend Warrior BBQ awesome! I only ask cause during the first precook burn out I noticed that it was maintaining temp, but as far as visually seeing smoke, I only noticed that at the beginning.
      So I might as well ask, just cause you don’t see the chamber filled with smoke, that doesn’t mean it’s not doing it’s job? Correct?

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ
      @WeekendWarriorBBQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ryan richard correct. This smoker will only billow with smoke every 10-15 minutes or so. The rest of the time it puts out a very clean, almost invisible smoke.

    • @juanr861
      @juanr861 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ryan richard yeah so I re-did everything again meaning re-prime and slowly raise up temp and it all looks much better now. Thanks for your fast respond we’re now ready to do some smoking.
      Thank you

    I have the Louisiana Grills version of this in the larger 7 series. Almost 2000 square inches of cooking. 6 racks. I absolutely love it. Have done ribs, briskets, butts, wings, jalapeño poppers, bacon...I’ve baked biscuits in it, a killer pineapple upside down cake, cookies. This thing is amazing. Got it at Costco for $450.

      Okay, I received my 3-Series Copperhead from Wal Mart Online a day early. Yes, the six-hour investment is well worth it. I followed your instructions and my baby back ribs came out great. Ours Sam’s Warehouse didn’t have St Louis style ribs, so I went with what they had. My first cook was three racks. I’m looking forward to following more of your recipes. Now here is something not really mentioned on any Pit Boss pellet tubes that I’ve seen... pellet removal. Sure the back door (giggidy) is available, but there’re a lot of pellets to burn out. It’s important to me because I live in humid and rainy Florida. My fix - and it might be a questionable practice... I removed the grate in the pellet hopper, so I can use my ShopVac and remove the pellets near the auger leaving fewer pellets to burn off. I understand the risk is a potential fire in the ShopVac. Just leave it in an open area as a precaution. The grate has pressed-in threads that I replaced with 7/16 and 3/8 nuts (giggidy).

      @@WeekendWarriorBBQ Very pleased with results. I used a 50/50 mix of mesquite (even though it says its not for pork) & Charcoal pellets. That's one thing I changed from your original smoke. I used Weber brown sugar rub, SBR sauce on 2 racks of baby back ribs. smoked both on same shelf. Didn't put on seperate on different shelves. Great smoke ring. Didn't get the pull back on the bone that you did, but was still very very tasty. I'll experiment more, but very pleased. I think I need to add more water during cook as it about ran dry at the end. Would you recommend adding more if water evaporates or does that mess with temp? Any other advice? Do you prefer laying on ribs on rack or hanging. I have hooks to try that method. Bought pellet sifter through your link to avoid auger issues later.

    Great video! PitBoss owes you a kickback for teh series 3 I just bought ;)
    Quick question though - Tools needed are a screwdriver and level. I didn't see the level used in the video so I pulled down the user manual from Pit Boss and it say a level is needed, but it doesn't show the level being used, or mention anywhere about "make sure this is level with the X"
    What are we checking for level and how is level adjusted if it's not level?

      Hi, Robby. I made a "5 Tips for beginners" video that you might not have seen but in a nutshell:
      Vacuum out the ashes before each cook.
      Clean the built-in temperature probe every couple of cooks
      Keep the water pan full of water (generally every two hours it needs to be refilled)
      Pellet smokers in general wont produce as strong of a smoke flavor as a stick burner so if you like a strong smoke flavor, use hickory & mesquite pellets.
      Wood pellets dont like moisture so I wouldnt store the smoker long term with pellets in it.
      If you have any specific questions, I'm happy to respond with what Ive learned since owning this thing.

      Thanks! You obviously keep the glass looking good especially doing all these videos. How much of a PITA is it to clean that and rest of the interior? How often do you have to clean grease buildup. Definitely don’t want a fire breaking out in a closed chamber.

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ
      @WeekendWarriorBBQ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Windex cleans that glass surprisingly well so no complaints there. The biggest PITA is the grease tray when there is water and grease after the cook.

    I've got the same Pit Boss vertical smoker and I have to say it was very impressive for a very short period of time...after that, error codes, bad temp probe, continually shutting off, bad control board and now the igniter. I hope you have better luck, I'm buying a traeger or something. Done with Pit Boss and their customer service.

      As you can probably imagine, I have heard of the horror stories. It’s a shame. I have had good luck with mine. Traeger has a great reputation. So does CampChef

    I’ve been watching your channel and love the content! I’m wanting to get a smoker and have never smoked anything before. I want a vertical pellet smoker and I wanted to know what you recommend! Thanks and love all of your different shirts! The Satriale's shirt was awesome!

      Thank you, Adam. There aren’t too many vertical pellets smokers out there to choose from. CampChef, Pit Boss, and the Pellet Pro 2300 are the brands the come to mind. I think the Pellet Pro has been unavailable for a while or no longer being manufactured. With that in mind, I recommend the Pit Boss series 5 sportsman. I bought it last summer and I love it. It’s not the greatest quality build (door leaks a little bit, casters are not good) but for the money it does a good job. It’s big enough to smoke a full packer brisket.
      The down side to any pellet smoker is that they have moving parts that can break down and it requires electricity. You trade convenience for a little bit of smoke flavor (compared to wood or charcoal) but for most people it’s good enough.

    I had my local Lowes put mine together and picked it up. I wanted to do ribs first and found this video. I followed your instructions to a T! I used a rub that I love and sweet baby rays. I must say we will not be buying ribs out anymore...no need! These were the BEST RIBS WE HAVE EVER EATEN!!! I love your style and will be trying more of your videos! I am looking to smoke deer meat and wild hog. Hubby hunts and we want to try more smoked meats. Also, people don't be afraid to make that spray mix...its great and works great for clean up like he said! Thanks for sharing and I did subscribe! Looking forward to more.

    Nice video. I have some questions: 1) When you put the ribs in originally, the water pan was empty, but it looked like you added water at some point without discussing when or why? 2) You moved the smoker inside and out due to the weather, so what kind of extension cord were you using, and is that recommended?

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ
      @WeekendWarriorBBQ  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions. I forgot to record the water going in. The water is going to create moisture in the pit. This will allow the food to absorb more smoke and give you better tasting results. This is also why I spritz the ribs with water and apple cider vinegar... smoke loves moisture. The water pan also sits directly above the burn pot and diffuses the heat/ balances the temperature in the pit much better than if there was no water in there.
      The extension cord is just your standard outdoor rated extension cord. I think most people will have to use an extension cord because it can be difficult to have an outlet right next to where you want to cook. I don’t have the specifications handy but I think the power cord is probably only 6-8 feet long. Hope that helps 😁

    Mike, what are your thoughts on the pellet use? So, what's your estimation of the lbs of pellets to cook a 20lb brisket? I'm thinking it could get pricey?

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ
      @WeekendWarriorBBQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Xavier. That’s a good question. On my 3 series I can probably get a brisket done on less than half of a 20lb bag. This time of year though it’s worse because of the cold but pellet consumption is definitely something you need to consider. A lot of people will finish their briskets in the oven once they wrap it to save on pellets and I think that is a good idea.

    QUESTION! In many reviews of the PB3, there are several complaints about the auger assembly not working properly. The fix doesn't sound like a fun task. Have you experienced this yet or know of anyone that has?

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ
      @WeekendWarriorBBQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mark. I have heard of this happening but it hasn’t happened to me yet. I sift my pellets to get out the small fines and I also store my smoker in the garage so that water doesn’t get down into that auger somehow. That’s what causes it... the pellet fines get wet and then they harden like cement

    I just purchased a pit boss vertical smoker pro series. I used this video to help me with the initial setup and burn off. I have only had a chance to use it once and it was very easy and straight forward. My question is, do you have to prime it again for my second cook? The pellets that were in the pot are obviously ash now and burned out. I just want to make sure I am doing it correctly time and time again. Thanks.

    • @WeekendWarriorBBQ

    Hey Weekend Warrior, I used to steam my baby backs in the oven at a low temperature with beer and then finish them on a regular BBQ grill. Always came out great. Can you use other liquids in the water pan such as beer, wine, broth which might impart more flavor to the ribs/meat?? Thanks Bro!
