Go with the Hero 9 Black. I’ve owned every iteration of the GoPro since the Hero 5, and I can honestly say that the 9 is the 1st one that’s been super close to perfect (it’ll never be perfect until they can figure out a way to put a zoom on such a small sensor, but that’s a pipe dream). Battery life is over 30% better, front facing color screen, better mic, and 5K (at 30, but still). It’s also FAR superior in low light. And the MaxMod Lens is a great add on. I shoot a lot of the same kinds of content as you (backpacking, hiking, action sports, packrafting, National Park trips, etc... and I think you’ll really like the new model. You guys have some killer equipment btw. Love how the channel has evolved. The storytelling element has become some of the best content of its kind on YT. As a side note, I’m also sorry for your loss. Quite possibly the prettiest furball I ever saw. Reminded me of my Maine Coon mix who passed a few years back. Take solace in the fact that your cat could not have possibly lived a more fun and adventurous life in a million years had you not been it’s owners. Truly! She is the envy of all her new friends looking down upon you both
Thank you for all of that. And yes, if we get another GoPro we will go with the Hero 9 Black. We appreciate the kind words about our work and Luna. We miss that cat so much. She filled every moment of our lives with so much joy. I still feel like I hear her at night getting settled into the foot of our bed. Furbabies are just the best and I feel like we don't deserve all the good they bring
Our pleasure! Gear can be a daunting subject to dive into when you get started and it's taken a lot of trail and error for us to get here, so happy to help save you some time... and money!
Great Gear Review Mak! What really makes you videos so Great is You! When you are a Natural at looking at and engaging the camera it makes it feel like you are actually talking to Us. You dialogs are always fun to listen too and often humorous as well. Time really seems to go by quickly even when one is longer than usual as well. Love watching and sharing your adventures.
Well thank you so much! I really appreciate it. it's important to me that these are easy watching and informative so it always makes me happy to hear that I'm hitting my mark!
HAHA us either, but it was ready so we thought why not ;) also we were done editing summer adrift for about a month before the actual finale so we were a bit rested!
Awesome video! Its fascinating to see what kind of equipment different people use to produce their videos. Its not always about having the best and most expensive, but making the best of what you have. You guys have been doing an awesome job...I enjoy all your videos! Keep them coming! Cheers from Alaska.
Thank you! We like seeing what others use to and other videos like this one have helped us pick out some of the gear that we have. So putting it back out there as our way of paying it forwards to those who have helped us!
Thank you so much! I’ve been looking for ways to level up my video production with all of my upcoming trips planned...gonna have to do some gear shopping!
Have you looked as a Drift Innovation ghost as a GoPro replacement. It has way more exposure control than have I have seen on the GoPro’s I have used. Also the XL you can start multiple of these with the same time stamp by just starting any one of them. I find this very simple for time synched video on multiple camera view points.
I have really enjoyed my time with the peak design travel tripod. The ball head is a bit different, but the form factor is incredible for carry-on only travel. As we head into the realm of lightweight truck campers I’m sure we will continue to appreciate that.
Yes, the Mavic Pro 2 is a great drone! I’ve used mine in many locations and even overseas, and it has yet to let me down. Highly recommend it! Bryan from Vancouver
Really appreciated this one! Have been trying to up my video game now the past few months and coming to realize how it's really not just about the camera/lens setup and how much good lighting/audio can take a video. One small gear piece I just picked up is the manfrotto mini tripod to replace my knockoff gorilla pod after struggling for a while with the bendy legs not staying where I want them to.
I have the peak design travel tripod (aluminum) and can attest that they are great. I love the compact, sleek look when it’s closed and the backpack hook is a great feature to keep the weight down and the wind from blowing your camera over. If I could buy it again, I definitely would consider the carbon fiber as the aluminum did begin to feel heavy after a 14 mile hike.
Thanks for the update on your gear. How about an update video on the rig? Check out the Mavic Air 2s it will be equipped with an one inch sensor like to pro 2. Also there might be a pro 3 down the road and presumably prices will drop. Have a nice one ✌️
Yeah that is what we are waiting for. And don't worry a video to that effect is on the way being that we are overhauling our power management and solar systems!
I’d love to see an updated version of this specifically about backpacking camera gear. I’m struggling with finding a good d mount lens that doesn’t feel like a boulder when hiking!
Hey guys excellent vid again, helpful as I am getting ready to get my own vid concept going. Anyways wondering if you could share how you guys edit video, computer, software, etc…. I am leaning heavily towards a new and powerful Mac Book Pro, 14 or maybe 16. Thanks in advance. Tom
I was a bit worried when I dropped $600 for the Travel Tripod Carbon fiber version on kickstarter, but after owning for just over a year I have to say it is one of the best pieces of kit I own. It is well worth the money.
YEAH?!?!? Everyone we've ever talked to who has it swears by it. We can't wait to upgrade... our current one likes to jettison it's leg extensions in inopportune times ;)
That l you for this video! I’ve been curious about what you guys have been using. If you’re looking for a telephoto, you might want to bite the bullet and go for the Used Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS E-Mount Lens For your landscapes and for potential action footage. Plus, as you know, you can write off the purchase at the end of the year.
Funny you should bring that up because just this week we upgraded to the a new lav setup and started looking into Hollyland more seriously... that changing case is 🤯
@@BoundForNowhere yeah! I’ve been using mine for a couple months and it’s incredible, such a lifesaver. I mostly have rode mics(ntg5, video mic, etc) and this hollyland hasn’t disappointed yet:)
Pretty much everything you guys have is on my wish list! LOL I’ve been filming with two things.. my iPhone and the mavic mini but hey! Work with what ya got!
Roll with what you own as we always say! I think it's important to start with what you have and make strategic upgrades as you go and learn. We started with FAR less than what we currently have and have tried to only upgrade when really necessary. So no rush! Keep rocking your current gear!
Would love to hear about what program you guys use to edit videos. Thanks for the informative video. I aspire to have production quality like you guys! -Nathan
Nice! How about info on the editing software you use and a short video on your process of making videos? Both technical and the creative process. Like how you tell your stories and document them so well. Tripod: have you checked out the Aluminum Manfrado BeeFree with ball head? Good report from similar overlanding use over 5 years.
Thanks so much for the gear video! We have been making our videos the GoPro9/Osmo/Mini but just made the jump to a "real" camera lol. We have a SonyA6500. It seems like we have jumped in the deep end! Any advice for camera noobs that are struggling lol....
I mean that is pretty much just my all the time expression, I crack myself up making these and often are coming off of a mess up that made us laugh pretty hard ;)
Hi guys! I am a guidance counselor and educational consultant trying to help a client who loves art but is struggling with a way to create a career out of her passion. I believe MAK (or both of you??)went to the same college as my nephew for the arts. Would either of you be willing to connect with this student (interview, email correspondence) and help a young person reach her dreams? I am a fan and know you both have a wealth of knowledge to share as out of the box thinkers (well you are in the box but the box has wheels!)
I’ve wasted a lot of money on tripods so trust me there are better and cheaper brands then peak design. I use a flm tripod they are just as good if not better than really right stuff and cost half the price. Benro is also a really good brand. I would suggest buying from a company that specializes in making tripods and not the trendy one lol
I love Peak Designs. But you don't want that tripod. It's going to move on you almost as much as what you have. I borrowed a friend's and I decided to just handhold instead

Hooray! I love the OG videos. Summer was awesome but these are my jam. Thank you!
We like doing both, so while we film another series this is what we will be doing!
We have the Mavic Pro 2 and it has been a GAME CHANGER for filming on the road.
Super informative and helpful! Thanks so much for the tech beta!!
Best entertaining presentation ever !! Did not take in a word you said, just watched in amusement. Thanks.
OH HECK YEAHHH!!! Wasnt expecting a new video so soon after the series!!! 😄

One thing I have been admiring is the develop settings you guys use for your portraits. They always look very real without over developing.
