Being a MacBook Air user since 2013, and the Pro since 2015, I really don't think I'd be upgrading to any of these ever. Apple has seriously gone down hill big time, in terms of performance for the kind of work I do and the absurd price points. There's absolutely no value for money with their products anymore, before I wouldn't mind paying the extra premium, but now it's just gotten ridiculous. When my Mac dies, doubt anytime soon, I'm considering the new Razor Blade 15 or Dell XPS 15, which I think anyone in the market for productive laptops should look at.
Agreed. Apple is turning into the Gucci of computers/phones. There's no real reason to buy them other than to say you have an Apple product. There was a timr when they were all-around the premium choice and performance/cost ratio was worth it (the first itouch and Iphone were completely amazing for their time).

Edit : if you look at benchmark score you can see that this new MacBook Air is even more powerful than 2016 13 inch MacBook Pro. Thus it’s definitely better than the MacBook.
Apple just pumps our money. I was waiting for 6 year for new Air. And what do I get? Overpriced laptop with slow 2core processor and 256Mb ssd for 1500$! Or that stupid touch bar on pros... and the clunky keyboard... Steve would never let this happen. In past we got solid products for reasonable price and we knew what we paid for. Now they selling us something without even light apple logo and asking too much.
I believe no.... Apple had a great chance to update its consumer centric laptop bit failed. The price tag is way to high to compete with other Windows laptop in the market. I believe that Apple should have focused on making it competitively priced. Just like the iPad 5th and 6th generation. There should be some products providing down right affordability to consumers so that more and more customer be part of Apple ecosystem.
@Ayaan Saeed Not if you are going to offer 128 GB storage, without a way to easily expand it -- through an SD card for instance, and even then it would be too expensive, and let's not even talk about the fact the SSD is soldered to the board as usual with Apple. This seems like a good product, but I can't understand the pricing. If I were to buy a Mac at that price point, it would be a Macbook without a doubt.
Actually its not competing with any of those. Its target market is the existing Mac users. And most of the mac users will never chose to move to windows. So it doesn't matter. If you dont have budget for a Pro you are gonna buy the Air, because honestly once you experience mac it is hard to go back to Windows. My Windows laptop is just lying in my drawer for a about a year now.
Always have and always will, hate the force touch trackpad and butterfly keyboards. All I really wanted was a retina screen and spec bump. All the useful ports are gone, and the lit up Apple logo. Because of that, I would still buy the 'old' macbook air in a heart beat.
@moo I think he's referring to the clicking part of the trackpad. Some people (like my dad) really love the feel of a mechanical click. That being said, I have had no issues with using the trackpad. But I really do hate that keyboard.
I'm glad Microsoft Surface exists! No dongle life and no Y series processor in the Pro! I can use my camera hardware (micro SD card) too! (Without dongle life)
Too expensive and too weak in performance. Also the fact that Apple is still selling the old MacBook Air for 999$ is the biggest ripoff at all! Should have kept the price for the new one at 999 and finally kicked out the old one.
You're taking the time to explain to current MacBook Air users what they've been missing out on (Force Touch, Touch ID, Butterfly Keyboard, etc.), which is pretty awesome and considerate. Awesome video as always, y'all.
If it was 200-300 less it would be great, especially with the Linedock coming out (Mag safe, expandable SSD, ports, battery, no dongle, and Thunderbolt enabled). Then it would be the perfect Budget (Mac) laptop of 2018.

because they just want you spend more money in macbookpro with touchbar(it come with bluetooth 5.0), the Apple today only care about the money in ur pocket
Crimson Harry It’s highly unlikely that Bluetooth 5 will play any role at all with AirPods. It’s a higher power implementation for Bluetooth, largely to increase range and throughput, and tiny devices like that won’t be making use of it. It’s basically just rolling in more features of wifi into Bluetooth, and I honestly have yet to hear any compelling use cases for it yet. Current Bluetooth 4.2 with aptx standards already essentially exceed the quality/bit rate of any music people will have on their mobile devices, so any further bandwidth doesn’t serve any purpose for that.
4:15 - How is this Intel's fault? This is Apples fault for specifying a crappy (cheap) processor. Intel have had an amazing last few years in the laptop processor space. Bizarre comment. It's like blaming Pirelli that when Toyota put the cheapest (economy) Pirelli tyres on their budget car? You even contradicted yourself and mention there ARE better processors available. This is an example of Apple (once again) using cheaper internal components to improve margins. Customer loses.
How did they fail exactly? How is it true? In this case the chip in the MacBook is 100% Apples decision. There are plenty of better (great) Intel CPUs they could have used. This was all about margin on Apples part.
Yes there Are better Intel chips than in mb air but overall is the work of Intel Last view years in my Optinion a joke. When you look at the newest iPad Pro where the arm chip is maybe better than any intel mobil chip Outside. Better Performance. Better battery life. It’s Crazy. Future is definitly Not x86
digifishmusic intel failed because they have fallen way behind their promise of delivering a 7nm processor this year. This air would have been way more powerful if intel Had delivered on their promises - hope that clears up the confusion.
No...... Apple needs to lower the price for an low powered laptop, in this price point people can have powerful windows laptops instead of Apple MacBook air. And the tech also needs to be upgraded more this is not up to the mark and once again Apple handle your marketing prices carefully for the budget oriented people who want to get into the Apple ecosystem.
You don't get it. People that want the Air don't need a powerful laptop. The Air has never been a powerful laptop. Just a thin and light general purpose computer with great battery life. And it still is that. PS: Also, people that want the Air want MacOS, not Windows.
Lxender "I would choose the Dell XPS 15 over this thing any day." The Dell XPS 15 doesn't have a better processor unless you go up to the i7 at which point you're already at $1500. It's also 4 lbs vs the Air's 2.75 lbs, the thinnest part of the XPS 15 is .45" while the Air is .16", and the base model - the only model cheaper than the Air - has a 2.5" 1TB HYBRID drive, which is much, MUCH slower than the Air's pci-e SSD. So what you're saying is that you would choose a larger, heavier, thicker, slower Dell that will not be faster than the Air unless you move up to full SSD and an i7, at which point you are almost at $2,000. Is that about right? If you don't understand why the Air is a better value, you obviously aren't paying attention.

i like the new air, just disappointed in the price and standard SSD size. Apple needs to recognize price like they did with the gen 1 ipad at $499 and the old mac mini at $499. $99, $499, and $999 are important psychological thresholds that drive the success or failure of many products. Apple needs to recognize they don't need to make 40% on everything when they make 80% on ram and drive upgrades. I'm sorry Tim, but Steve recognized that. I think this is what you get when you put a bean counter in charge.
I don't think they would act much different under Jobs today. They know laptop and iOS processor gains have slowed since jobs was around and people don't need to upgrade as much (especially since they've finally ditched the dated iPhone 6 look) so the only way to keep the massive profits flowing in is make the garden's walls bigger, make them all luxury devices and get more out of each product. I wish the trend would stop but don't see it happening anytime soon
the difference is that now tim is answering the shareholders, and if i was a shareholder i would say "make the most money you can make the fastest you can" and that's exactly what tim is doing so he's good as its job... shareholders don't care about mid long term but this is really bad for apple
captainmarvel69 but this isn’t correct. What all companies want and what Apple has in spades is a following, fan base, ecosystem, fan boys, whatever you want to call it. Capitalism is always the battle for market share or profits. Is it better to sell 10 units at $100 each or 1 unit at $1,000? You arguably have less costs and more profits at 1 unit but you one tenth the ability to sell more follow up units or upgrades or accessories. Apple must continue to grow their base or it doesn’t matter how much profit they make on each device.
@@brandonkylemarks Good thought, the question is, would you rather try to sell an expensive article to 70 people or a more reasonable priced thing to 100 people? I believe having a higher market share would be a safer strategy.
I think part of the reason for the price increase is that existing consumers would have felt betrayed after Apple announces a product weeks or days after they purchased a 4 year old product at the same price. People would have said “what’s was stopping you?” or “why didn’t you make the old products cheaper?” So they bumped the price.
With the pro being the beast and the MacBook being the portable one what’s the point with this new one It’s only 120 grams less than pro The air should have been the budget one
The funny thing is, for everyone that's upset about this update, the old MacBook Air at 999$ still exists on Apple's website. I agree this should have been priced more competitively however. I happened to snag a base model 13 inch non-touch bar MacBook Pro in August for 1099 (it was on sale), which is very similar to this Air but has a better processor and isn't wedge-shaped (also missing Touch ID). I just think their line-up is a bit silly right now--the differences between the base model pro, the new Air, and the forgotten 12 inch MacBook seem to be pretty little, yet all of these products still exist in their lineup. Anyone buying this Air should just go for the base model pro because the price is so similar, it just makes more sense. Not sure if they're gonna slash the base model pro anytime soon, but the Air really isn't "air" anymore at this price. I got lucky with that sale though, glad I hopped on it before this came out lol, the base model pro is back up to 1300$ again....
7:13 "Its basically a macbook that finally includes all the stuff that has been happening with laptops for the last few years". No, it's not. Things that have been happening to notebooks for the past few years that are NOT included in this thing: - Energy efficient quad-core U cpus (no, they're not "desktop class" as you claimed) that still perform really well. - Batteries have been getting way better (precisely BECAUSE of the old macbook air, that marvel of engeneering which you call decrepit), the new macbook air should be the king of battery and set a new standart once again. - USB-C being used to IMPROVE the life of the user, along with "legacy" ports (seriously, how can anyone already call USB 3 "legacy"?) instead of just removing all the ports for some extra thinness that nobody asked for, but look good on their presentation. I'm sure there are more, this is just from the top of my head.

Dieter, great review. I'm still unsure where, beyond branding, this machine is supposed to fit into Apple's laptop line? The pseudo i5 intel chip they've put in means it's only suitable the same kind of workflows accomplished as the 12" Macbook. As that 12" machine didn't get updated in August, does it look like Apple are killing off that line of products in favour of the easier to distinguish, already familiar Air brand? If so, then I guess this is an okay upgrade? An extra port, Touch-ID, hardware encryption, screen size parity. Mind you the 12" Macbook is silent/fanless. When the last real Air refresh in happened in 2011, no Windows based machine would offer the same experience in terms of solid industrial design or an OS that wasn't a dumpster fire on portable machines. Today that's not the same, Windows 10 is actually fine and OEMs like Huawei are aping Apple's industrial design & finishing quite nicely thankyouverymuch.

I got it from the Apple Education Store (256GB SSD for 1440€ Tax included) and sure its not the cheapest computer but, I'm an Apple User since 2009 and i love Mac OS and the Apple Ecosystem. And for the extremely good built quality and Mac OS i am willing to pay more. For example i also have an iMac from 2011 (the big thing with the CD Drive) and it works fine still today! And the specs doesn't matter much for Mac OS because the software is so well optimized from Apple that a MacBook can beat some Windows Machines with better specs on the paper. Thanks Verge...
mister x verge is indeed cliche
Being a MacBook Air user since 2013, and the Pro since 2015, I really don't think I'd be upgrading to any of these ever. Apple has seriously gone down hill big time, in terms of performance for the kind of work I do and the absurd price points. There's absolutely no value for money with their products anymore, before I wouldn't mind paying the extra premium, but now it's just gotten ridiculous. When my Mac dies, doubt anytime soon, I'm considering the new Razor Blade 15 or Dell XPS 15, which I think anyone in the market for productive laptops should look at.
Go ahead you won't regret it a bit.
Please take a look at the Surface Laptop, too.
The surface laptop is gorgeous
Agreed. Apple is turning into the Gucci of computers/phones. There's no real reason to buy them other than to say you have an Apple product. There was a timr when they were all-around the premium choice and performance/cost ratio was worth it (the first itouch and Iphone were completely amazing for their time).
Not to mention the need for dongles, which you can avoid by buying some other laptop
DDR3 RAM in a laptop with a 1.6ghz dual core? Its 2018 apple not 2010

Running at 1866. It's the lowest for a DDR4, but honestly, not worth the battery drain for this weak chipset.
@@MsOussax So, are you gonna also say that they sticked with a dual core cuz it saves more battery? dual core is soo 2007.

The reason you see the ‘old’ MacBook Air everywhere is because it was light and it was one of the cheapest Apple laptop. I don’t think this will be as popular as the air used to be because of the price point especially for student like me.

This laptop should have been released 2 years ago, and now it's already due an upgrade 🤷♂️
What's its point where the normal MacBook is practically the same?
It's an i5 y-series air-cooled, bigger screen, better speakers and thunderbolt... That's a difference. And it has a fingerprint sensor and better battery life compared to 13" pro. It's something in between them. I think it's a good device, just a little bit to expensive.
the other ones have more ports. the macbook only has one usb port, which is kind of important when that one usb port is the port that charges the device.
@@trumpalumpa9368 all these doesn't justify anything, they are in the Air only because the normal MacBook hasn't received an upgrade yet, and I hope it won't, it was already a MacBook air, would be stupid to sell two laptops that aren't much different
I feel the same, MacBook air / MacBook / MacBook pro really converged towards one another.
What ? Did you see MacBook price and specs ? I think I would definitely choose the MacBook Air instead of the MacBook if I had to pick one. As you said it’s the same but with better specs.
If you don’t like it then don’t buy it
I like the touch bar but understand why people don't like it. they should make an option to and touch bar on the air and function keys on pro
Yeah this price point now puts it up against the likes of the xps and quad core surface products
My Windows laptop is just lying in my drawer for a about a year now.
apple products were NEVER competitively priced, and i dont think they will ever be

I just bought my macbook air I love it being my first macbook ever I can't complain.

And your surface is thicker and weighs more because of it. You need to understand that there are tradeoffs.

I think a comparison of how secure an rgb camera unlock to Touch ID is something worth exploring, especially for business people who travel and want light laptops but likely carry sensitive information.
I cannot believe this device is not shipped with bluetooth 5.0. The lineup is already confused af, but this device is lacking the latest bluetooth iteration. What a shame.
because they just want you spend more money in macbookpro with touchbar(it come with bluetooth 5.0), the Apple today only care about the money in ur pocket
What do you need Bluetooth 5.0 for? Just curious...
Yeah how useful is Bluetooth 5.0 to the average consumer who uses wireless headphones? Will it have a huge impact? I am just curious.
Wes Perry Bluetooth 5 will play an important role when airpods gen 2 gets released.
Sorry but it's kind of true Intel failed and I'm happy that we will see ARM Chips in MacBooks in 2020
How did they fail exactly?

This air would have been way more powerful if intel
Had delivered on their promises - hope that clears up the confusion.
Ashish Maharana they will probably drop the price after the new year.
You don't get it. People that want the Air don't need a powerful laptop. The Air has never been a powerful laptop. Just a thin and light general purpose computer with great battery life. And it still is that.
PS: Also, people that want the Air want MacOS, not Windows.
Apple lower their prices? Oh.. you're one of those people who don't live in reality. You're one of those "what if.." types.
1:47, gods sake Apple, over a decade of that window resizing performance...
I love macOS, but this is a cashgrab. I would choose the Dell XPS 15 over this thing any day.
Yes, and so would anyone with a brain. Unfortunately sheeps don't have brains apparently...
Lxender "I would choose the Dell XPS 15 over this thing any day."
The Dell XPS 15 doesn't have a better processor unless you go up to the i7 at which point you're already at $1500.
@Myziam YT Compare the base 15 inch MB Pro with base model 15 inch Surface Book 2, where you on the SB2 get a *real* keyboard, a decent selection of ports, a *real* graphics card (gtx 1060) *and* a detachable "ipad pro" built in!
@@vernonprice5986 u clearly didn't done any research. The xps 15 comes with a H series processor which is way better than U series and Y series processor. Has 4 cores and clcoks to 4GHz max. It also has DDR4 ram. For the base model, which has a 1TB HDD is 1009USD, if you add another 100USD u can get a 256GB SSD (1109USD). Which is still cheaper than the new macbook air. Even though the xps weights 4lbs and the air weights 2.75lbs, you can't really tell a difference between them without using a scale.
@@vernonprice5986 Not sure where you're getting pricing from. I found this for $999 on Dell's Website

So this is basically a MacBook Pro with a different shape and name
there is no market for this computer anymore. When the Air first came out the pro computer is thick and heavy, a completely different laptop. Now the Pro lineup is basically the same size, yeah it might be heavier but you can get the 13'' MacBookPro starting at 1300, there is no justification for the new Macbook Air and its price.
battery life? gen 3 keyboard? touch id? youre gonna pay a premium price for a premium product.. im not saying its perfect, but there is absolutely justification to buy it..
You don’t get “hey Siri”, Touch ID, the thin design, and that new gold colour 😂
C O bullshit it’s brilliant
Got 2017 Air few months ago and now not really sad about it except the screen. I need on board USB 3 and Magsafe ports. Concludes that one laptop cannot bundle everything an ideal laptop should have - that's how companies survive.
i like the new air, just disappointed in the price and standard SSD size.
With the pro being the beast and the MacBook being the portable one what’s the point with this new one
It’s only 120 grams less than pro
The air should have been the budget one
Things that have been happening to notebooks for the past few years that are NOT included in this thing:
- Energy efficient quad-core U cpus (no, they're not "desktop class" as you claimed) that still perform really well.
I don't think there's a Windows laptop on the market that has a "retina" display but also has a battery that lasts as long as the Air. If there is please let me know so I can buy it immediately.
@@myNEONCITY Do you think the retina display (2560 x 1600) is THAT much better than a 1080p (1920x1080) IPS on a 13 inch notebook? If a 1080p can satisfy you, there is the LG Gram with a 72Wh battery that is said to last quite a while.
@Myziam YT Your first sentence is correct. Your second is wrong. USB 3 is simply the MOST USED connector in the world. Maybe you are forgetting that there are a few billion people outside the first world countries, and they also use computers! Try living in Brazil and equipping yourself with all the needed adapters and dongles for a "usb-c only life". You'll spend the monthly pay of a blue collar worker.
I'm not saying USB-C is worse, or that it shouldn't be adopted. But there is a consumer friendly way to do that, and there is the Apple way. Many notebooks nowadays have 1 or 2 USB-Cs along with some USB-3. That is coherent with the transition times which we live in.
@@arthurtiradentes I've looked at that one before. I think reviews were saying it lasts about 7-9 hours, which is pretty good, but I thought the body had too much flex, and doesn't it have a slow SSD or something like that? 1080p is fine ig, but I'd prefer to have a QHD screen, it just looks nicer.
@@myNEONCITY I have the 15" version. Mine lasts about 9 hours on a full charge. My 2013 Air is still working fantastically. I really don’t see a reason to upgrade yet, and their price is crazy when you get just 128gb standard. That’s ridiculous.
Nice review as usually! I really wanted to feel that this Air could be a economic version of my MacBook, but no way. Apple is closing options of entry level products for people with few money. I really love the result os this product but there is a lot of people that wanted a more economic like 12 inch old Air
I used my MacBook Air to watch this video and I can guarantee that it is a good buy. I don't fully believe that this Mac can perform extreme tasks but it can most certainly surprise you
This new MacBook Air is for people who dont need a lot of raw power in a laptop like myself but want a lightweight, highly portable laptop with a great, but slightly bigger screen than a MacBook 12', but lighter than a MacBook Pro, while being priced a bit lower than those 2.
Of course the biggest reason people who will buy the new MacBook Air is also because of the MacOS, and the top class Haptic/Force Touchpad
I don’t get why people hate the touch bar. It’s been so useful for me, especially for word documents.
If only Apple could bring optimized for Mac A12X Bionic chip on this Macbook Air that would be great !
Congrats! They look awesome. (Two years was a loooong wait!)
I honestly think the only reason the 12 inch macbooks don't have that keyboard problem is that the people who buy them type really slowly.
The fans are gonna spin up...? But there's no fan in this model. Did you even use it while video editing?
There is a fan, unlike the 12" MacBook. There's a good article on Engadget on the pros/cons of this.
@@NathanYoungman I'm really confused. Some sources say it's fanless and others say it has a fan.
@@sonikku997 Yah, I was confused initially too, with Apple reps telling AppleInsider that it was fanless, while other Apple reps telling Engadget that it had a fan. It is a Y series chip like the 12" MacBook, but unlike the 12", they put a fan in the Air. That can be a good thing for running intensive tasks like video exports, but you have to put up with fan noise sometimes. I'm not in a rush, so I may just wait for the next generation (for other reasons too).
Apple isn't a consumer electronics company anymore. It's a mix of an enthusiastic and rich-people electronics company. They aren't making a mass market laptop. They are making the laptop that rich, non-creatives want and need. And they did a great job
apple should've done in years ago, but they didn't. they made a MacBook with higher price and worse performance and keeping their MacBook Air user hanging for so many years, now they are seeking for more money to keep their stock price (the sales number of iPhone is getting lower), so they release another bite. These are the parts that I hate about apple, compare with making good products, they seems like to make more money now
Haven't they always been that way?
I hope I'm not the only one that's actually a big fan of how the butterfly switches feel on a notebook. And yes, I use Cherry MX Blues, Green Razer Switches, Kailh Speed Golds and Navy blues.
I am still rocking my orignial 11" MacBook Air. I only use it for word-processing, so no need to upgrade as long as it still works.

I had a MacBook Air 2013 and i uprageded to the new 2018 MacBook Air. It was a good step for me. I use my Mac for E.-Mail, Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and surfe the web. Nothing fancy. And for me, the great Batterylife is important. And when i need Windows i use a Surface Pro (most for Work and universitystuff)
the question is if this was $1000 who the hell would buy MacBook Pro? lol on the other hand if pro is $1300 and air is $1200 who the hell will buy air??? this is so confusing to me
Me too...me too...
david galstyan I’m getting na MBA haha
The touch bar is actually really useful in Microsoft word and Spotify
It's a great looking laptop, but sorry I'm still in to Windows OS because for me it's's still better than MacOS.
Windows can be installed on any Mac.
@@oliverroy7969 no point in spending that much money on a mac to install windows... if you use windows, get a different laptop for a lower price and better specs. Apple are beginning to drop the ball on each new release...
You are poor
@@thedeveloper4207 I bet you have a an Apple sticker on your car ;-)
I will be keeping my old Macbook Air. It has actual ports and a great keyboard. Sure, the screen is not retina, but it's good enough for me and it has LOTS of brightness.
I hope everyone knows that this is worth
MidSpike apple has never been about specs tho I think they focus more on performance and using less to do more...? Just take a look at the iPhone XS Max and note 9 like the note9 on paper seems to be the better performer with all its extras in ram/processors and what not but in tests the iPhone beats it
That has to do with optimizations made by apple...
But intensive software (like the Adobe Suite) depend on specifications A LOT...
It launched at $1560 price tag in India compared to the $900 older model. Let that sink in.
Now that they seem to have accepted that stupid bar (aka Touch Bar) is useless and stupid...how come macOS cannot get some Face ID love? It’s perfect for that.
+ I’m still super angry at how horrible the keyboard is and I’ve been on it for 2 years.
I like my touchbar thank you.
Don’t get too attached. Seems like it’s on its way way out. It’s not on MacBook , MacBook Air, iMac, iMac pro, man mini....
This should have been updated years ago. Apple’s new motto should be - Just Good Enough.
Apple didn't became the trillion dollar company by providing value for money....Those who are complaining about the price, take a chill pill coz this cheap piece of hardware is gonna sell like hot cakes
Pratik Raj Pant yeah right
I'm holding on to my old Macbook Air for the moment..... Thinking of getting the Macbook Pro next year for a lot of reasons..
This laptop would've been perfect with a better pricing strategy; if the entry model was miraculously set at $800-900, everyone and their moms would have an Air
Rumour has it they have not yet finished battery tests because the laptop is still at 50%
