Thank you to all of my subscribers AND viewers who aren't subscribed! Thank you for watching, liking and commenting on my videos! Thank you for all of your support in this dream we call "TH-cam". Here is a story of a Stihl MS170! Wait until you see this one! Please, watch until the end! :) Have a wonderful Friday!
It's scary how bad some peoples best efforts are. From putting straight gas in 2 stroke engine, to reassembly of choke / on off lever. Then, when someone shows on YT how to repair/maintain a saw, Someone special decides to live their psychodrama in the comment section. TH-cam is truly a magical place.
I know there are trolls out there watching your videos, but I suggest you just be yourself. From my vantage point, I enjoy the humor and things you do and say. I learn a lot as you diagnose a saw from your explanations. Thank you and continue to be yourself!!
There are trolls out there! I wish I could block the trolls from seeing my videos! They don't deserve to watch good content! If a person wants to watch shady, questionable, super fast hack jobs there are lots on TH-cam to choose from! lol
As someone that doesn't know much about chainsaws or 2 stroke engines, It is super interesting to hear everything you do and go through to make a saw function or what are the problems that will not be fixable for a particular saw. Very fun to watch. thanks.
The idiot that told you to shut up will be the person that can't fix his chainsaw because he doesn't listen 🤣🤣 it's good that you explain what and why things happen 😀
I’m so happy I found this channel!! You make working on these Stihls effortlessly, I have a 180 and I have a big understanding now how it works and how to keep it working thanks to you!!
We had a brush cutter that someone put straight gas in and the shop said the engine was scored & the carb was warped, and they recommended that we scrap it and buy a new one, but they could replace the carb and see how it goes. So that is what we did, still working 20+ years later
Best video yet!!! As someone who resurrects old motor bikes, there is a certain satisfaction in giving life to what some would call a lost cause. You'll have to keep us posted on the future adventures of this little saw. Keep up the good work =;-)
There are always people out there that have nothing positive to say in the comments. I don’t understand why they watch and feel the need to comment. Great work and I love your commentary.
Bonjour Erica. Wow. That is a tough little machine. I love that you dig deeper to test things. I am a retired instructor and i can say your videos are very well made. You dig in to help the viewers understand what you are doing. I work part time at a Stihl dealer repairing 2 stroke engines. I keep some parts for further investigation especially carbs and during my free time i dig in to take them all apart including check valves. It helps me alot in disgnostics because i can draw a picture of the workings in my mind. So when i investigate a customers machine i can get strait to the point. The carbs on MS 170 have only a idle screw and it works in an unusual way. I think it might be of interest to the viewers to see how they work. Thanks again for the time you put in your videos.
Thanks Erica for the awesome video! That poor little 170 never had a chance. What a shame! Only 4 tanks of gas and one was straight gas.FeelsSadMan. P.S. Don't feed the TROLLS!
Erica, I love how you keep drilling down for us with saws like this. We’ve all had saws like this, and I agree everyone has an economic limit. But sometimes the educational value far outweighs the monetary cost. This saw is a keeper for that reason alone.
Great experimental video that shows some engines want to live even when they are used and abused - thanks you for taking the time to educate and teach others that even though things are not healthy an engine can still run and attempt to be useful. Nice upgrade to the shop - wont' be nearly as springy and uneven walking and moving heavy items over the previously wooden areas. The stable cleaner brought back memories of growing up on a dairy farm but back then the stable cleaner consisted of a wheelbarrow, fork and shovel, myself, two older brothers and my dad as the motive power to load the wheelbarrow. In winter time it got "interesting" once you left the barn to get up enough speed to stay on the wooden plank without the wheel dropping off the plank prematurely. Can remember a couple of times when a change of clothes was required once chores were done but we learned quickly what worked and what didn't. 😅
I appreciate you wasting your time and showing other options that could cause problems and how to fix them and what to look for. Your videos are educational along with being entertaining.
I like your consistent process and explanation during inspection and diagnosis. Forget about the few idiots with rude comments. You have thousands of viewers that follow and enjoy your videos.
Great video, as always. I, too, own a 170. I bought it used from FB Marketplace as a runner, with knowing it "smokes a little." I think they were either mixing to much oil in the gas, and/or it was old fuel. It stunk and was dark. I cleaned it out and put fresh mix in. I also cleaned the spark arrestor and enlarged a couple holes in the muffler. It runs great so far. Had i listened to your advice about muffler mods prior to buying it, i probably would have left it alone. So, fingers crossed.
Also got a knucklehead which thought that the gas and oil were separated in a chainsaw, so 2 stroke oil in the fronttank and straight gas in de rear. Assumptions kill a lot.. Like this experimental vid, keep it up.
You tell 'em sister!!! I dont subcribe to channelss where they dont talk. Cooking camping, repairs, bee keeping... Whatever! I want to know what and why amd how. I enjoy our visits! It is nice to see snow, new doors, cozy fires, the Yukon Gold harvest and kitties! (Especially kitties! :-) ) Thank you for taking the time to make the videos. I have learned tons from you. You more than inspire me. Thank you!
I love the experiment! You are like watching a sewing instructor explain chainsaws and 2 stroke engines! And by that I mean thorough and clear. I didn't know "straight" gas would ruin a 2 stroke but it seems obvious now.
Hi Erica, love your videos as always. Ignore the haters, your voice overs help make the videos enjoyable and very relaxing. That ms 170 is certainly one impressive little saw deserving of a second chance.
Good job again Erica ...The guy who said "stop talking and do your job " my advice to him ...mute the video ...problem solved ...There are 21.3 K who enjoy your vlogs I first noticed your channel with the name "married with small Engines " I like your catch phrase ..Welcome to my work Bench ...Also I will meet you outside ..to see if it starts ..I am English and it find it very endearing ..Keep up the Good work
Great video Erica, I learned 2 things Stihl makes a tough saw that runs well even after straight gassing and NEVER lend out 2 stroke equipment to friends or neighbors .
I absolutely love your videos and the commentary .You are well spoken, funny, and have a great personality. Keep up the good work and don’t change a thing. As for the commenter that told you to “shut up”, you can’t fix stupid.
The secret is a scored piston makes no difference at all as long as the rings are free. The coating in the cylinder is much harder than the piston, so any marks on it is likely just discolouration.
I think a new Stihl saw is valid especially after the back story from the customer, don’t lend out your equipment.😊 Only 4 tanks wow. I hope you told the customer to dump the fuel he has at home.😊 Erica I hope the other shop didn’t charge him too much either, I know you didn’t charge him especially after buying a new saw.😊 Conclusion is good, perhaps just put a new diaphragm in old carburettor and remove new one, no point waisting new carburettor on hard work. ? Nice repair to doorway and floor, hope you can still close roller door for security 😊
That was beyond a insperation THAT WAS A BLESSING If everyone took a little time and effort as YOU DID this world would be a better place to live. And your grave yard might be a little smaller, Thanks YOU AND HUBBY for caring 1,000 points. THAT'S A HAPPY SAW....
Again, a fascinating video of how a few tweeks can change how a saw runs and the steps to go through to identify each one. New carb aside, if you had the service kit for the carb you probably would have gotten the same results. The lever being too low and the scrunchie metering diaphragm sure weren't right. You'll find out when you put that expensive carburetor back in stock after working magic on the original. From the demonstration cutting it looks like it may run for quite some time. Carry on, you're doing great.
Good morning, Erica, i really enjoy your repair vids. I cut a lot of wood at the farm with my MS400 and MS170 and I have already used a few tips from your videos on maintenance and repair to my saws that would have cost me a lot at repair shops. Ill have my morning coffee and watch a one of your vids and its relaxing and educational for me! nice work! have a great day. coming to you from a fellow Canadian from Edmonton AB ! DC
That was a great learning video. Your not wasting your time if you are making an informative video, that's how we learn. Keep on talking Erica you are very interesting 😊.
I like that you explain what and why in your videos those who don't like it they can turn the volume down thanks for tour time and experience in your life
Great video Erica. I have an ms170 from 2012 that has countless hours on it and it runs great. I think I paid $179cad for it. It’s one of my favourite saws due to the light weight. Have an ms250 and an ms362 for large items but I use the ms170 the most. I think they were one of the best budget saws from STIHL. Disregard the negative comments, you have plenty of viewers , me included, that love everything you post.
Here’s the thing. The saw doesn’t care what its cylinder and piston looks like. As long as it’s getting fuel, has compression (regardless of what it looks like), and spark at the proper time it’s gonna run.
I don't care what some folks think but I really enjoy your talking through your process . I have a ms261 that has been sitting for over a year now and have followed your wok on these saws. Since I have just turned 79 I think that my problem is that I just don't have the oomph to pull enough to get the bloody thing started. Perhaps old gas is one problem I can address?
I have a 261 at the lake and bought a MSA 200 battery Stihl for the city. The MSA 200 is no replacement for the 261, but for general limbing and pruning around the house, it’s quiet and no pull start.
Erica, that was pretty informative actually I didn’t give that saw a chance of surviving and actually you kind of brought it back to life it still worth hanging onto as a user or a good training shop for someone I appreciate what you’re doing
Hi Erica,I enjoy watching your video’s. Only thing I wish is that you would clear the most of the dirt on the saw before you start working on it.Working on a clean saw keeps the tools and hands much cleaner..That said, keep the video’s coming…
I love the way you have a process and you work that process. I did notice that that saw seemed to smoke a lot on acceleration. Seems like it might be a bit on the rich side too…
In all industries, there is good and bad business people/dealers/backyard mechanics. No one wants to get ripped off, including myself! (which is why my husband and I fix everything we are able to, ourselves). Not every business is bad or there to rip someone off, there are some very good people out there too! :)
Another great repair Erica! With 125psi compression, and the way it ran in your video, I would be totally happy with that saw. I guess the only question is, will it hold up? keep up all your commentary, i love it!
This video was very interesting, because this saw had in fact 2 issues, piston cylinder and carb ! I believe now that change the diaphragm and set the lever could have done the job. Thank you Erica for your comments, don't stop talking and explaining what you are doing !
Amazed that the saw still runs, leave alone cuts that well. Perhaps the ex-saw owner, should lock away his equipment next time he goes out with friends.
Amazing rebirth. I have watched 4 or 5 videos and was saying lets clean the spark arrestor. Lets replace the fuel and the fuel filter and that solenoid thingy.
Yes I was hoping you would try to work the saw and see how long it lasts. Please keep us updated on its health. Maybe work it some and do another compression test and so on thanks. For the great videos.
I cannot believe how well it runs given the condition of the piston and cylinder. I am curious. How much would you have charged for the new carb install (parts and labor)? And would you ever use after market parts not knowing the quality?
I wasn’t expecting much! And it worked its heart out for me! That new carb is worth approx $65 CAD. I have a minimum bench fee of $40, so around $100 give or take for a new OEM carb installed. I’m not a huge fan of aftermarket carbs for 2 stroke equipment (I order aftermarket for 4 cycle stuff all the time ). Sundays video is going to show why I don’t like aftermarket carbs and fuel lines :) Watch for a Stihl MS361 video 😁
I am absolutely loving your channel, keep doing what your doing and don't worry about the armchair quarterbacks also looking forward to more videos from your husband thanks and God bless
Thumbs up,didn't realize you had that for a floor, very good improvement and the new door will make it better, looking forward to the KM Combi if you want to tackle them they are fun to work on also
Great improvements to the shop, with the concrete work and woman / man door. A good thorough diagnosis and fix progression on the 170 saw. Sure seemed livelier at first on the fresh gas, but scored is scored of course. A bag of cat turds, as you mentioned. However, much better with a new carb. Re C foam - As a friend of mine said once after trying it "you can C foam but you won't C results" 8^) I'm sure I'll take some nasty comments from the C foam believers but I'm not judging anyone or engaging in discussion about it. I personally have not had any good results with it, or other additives and neither have several friends with lots of equipment. Erica, please pay no attention to the rude haters and please do keep talking! Cheers.
If that was my shop, I would move that rack of parts on the right side of the roll up door, out and build frame in a man door to go in and out right there. Then you'll have use of either door.
I appreciate this learning/experimental video. I certainly learned some things from this and it was interesting and entertaining. Thank you. :) Btw. I am from Norway. I hope you will have a wonderful afternoon!
G’day Erica there is always one bastard out there that’s going to have a go at you. I and nearly all of us are interested in you and following through even if the saw has had it’s day it’s good learning tool on not what to do and how to treat your saw so you have many years of using it. Without stating the bleeding obvious boy that’s cold there kind regards John
Sweet. Run the snot out of it. See what abuse that little ms170 will take. I bought a ms170 this year for up at the cabin. Amazing little saw. Love it. Under $200 bucks can’t say no to it.
Our parlor had an automatic poo removal system ME wiv a shovel a squeegee and a wheely barrow . 25 Frisians and a Jersey try living of that nowerdays !
Big improvement!!! I have a waste oil furnace that heats my shop. Rude ass people are using miserable anyway. It’s like us we have to get better to die. Lol!! Seafoam hacks!!!! It’s a little down on power but ran pretty good overall. Test of time. Can’t wait to find out. Thanks!

I don’t even need a saw but growing up watching the Stihl series timber sports as a kid I’ve always wanted one 😂 I’m tempted to buy the MS661magnum!
That's why people like you and your channel. I always say: people make the difference. Thanks for your work.
Another successful chainsaw repair is in the books. Keep doing what you are doing

Please don’t let comments bother you. You have the skills of a teacher, which for me is very nice. I really enjoy your channel
I have the same problem in my garage with a door like that, what an excellent idea for winter!! Thanks for that,Erica!!!
“Other than break it.”
😂
It’s nice of you to give them credit for doing something.
Great video Erica, I learned 2 things Stihl makes a tough saw that runs well even after straight gassing and NEVER lend out 2 stroke equipment to friends or neighbors .
Great choice in making this a long-term experiment! I'm very interested in the results. I hope you'll keep us updated.
Thanks, I will!

It ran well after a new carb it looks like it's ready to work for a while thanks for tour time
Good morning, Erica, i really enjoy your repair vids. coming to you from a fellow Canadian from Edmonton AB ! DC
Amazing, thank you!
3:44 An apt song for many of the saws that come into your shop...
That was a great learning video. Your not wasting your time if you are making an informative video, that's how we learn. Keep on talking Erica you are very interesting 😊.
Thanks so much
Erica, thank you for a look at the views that we don’t normally see. It lets us see another side of you guys.
Don’t waste a second on negative people, or do. It is your channel after all. I love the content!
I like that you explain what and why in your videos those who don't like it they can turn the volume down thanks for tour time and experience in your life
Thank you so much... for being honest and explaining... ignore haters!... wonderful job. Again thanks!
Thank you so much for your support!
Here’s the thing. The saw doesn’t care what its cylinder and piston looks like.
As long as it’s getting fuel, has compression (regardless of what it looks like), and spark at the proper time it’s gonna run.
Great video thanks for your time making these. I've learned quite a bit.
Glad to hear it!
Start with your fuel, and check out the fuel line and filter while you are there , then work your way through the basics 😊
I have a 261 at the lake and bought a MSA 200 battery Stihl for the city. The MSA 200 is no replacement for the 261, but for general limbing and pruning around the house, it’s quiet and no pull start.
The attention to detail is paramount, and you did an awesome job! Well done 👍
Thank you very much!
Brilliant unique content. Looking forward to a update after it has been put to work and talk as much as you like. “Non illegitimi carborundum”.
Erica, that was pretty informative actually I didn’t give that saw a chance of surviving and actually you kind of brought it back to life it still worth hanging onto as a user or a good training shop for someone I appreciate what you’re doing

I love the way you have a process and you work that process. I did notice that that saw seemed to smoke a lot on acceleration. Seems like it might be a bit on the rich side too…
The old carb was overfuelling, and the fuel was mixed too rich (lots of smoke! )
It was fun to see you keep working on the saw, good information.
I repair a lot of saws myself and one thing I learned about a lot of small shops is they rip people off
In all industries, there is good and bad business people/dealers/backyard mechanics. No one wants to get ripped off, including myself! (which is why my husband and I fix everything we are able to, ourselves). Not every business is bad or there to rip someone off, there are some very good people out there too! :)
With the new carb coming out of the box I expected a grand tadaaa noise . Thank you for the great content.
The saw seems a little low on torque now.
Another great repair Erica! With 125psi compression, and the way it ran in your video, I would be totally happy with that saw. I guess the only question is, will it hold up? keep up all your commentary, i love it!

Watch for a Stihl MS361 video 😁
The little MS 170 is an awesome little saw
Great video, thanks Erica.
Love your talking and presentations. The guy who disparaged your talking may be more suited to a cooking channel.
Thank you very much Erica!
I am absolutely loving your channel, keep doing what your doing and don't worry about the armchair quarterbacks also looking forward to more videos from your husband
thanks and God bless
Thank you for this experiment, very interesting video!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Thumbs up,didn't realize you had that for a floor, very good improvement and the new door will make it better, looking forward to the KM Combi if you want to tackle them they are fun to work on also
You are top. I think you do a great job and teach us novice users a lot. Thank you for your great videos. :-)
I am starting to use the new man door now for going out to test saws :)
This was a great video.I am glad you went further on this ones am new here and this is a great channel. Thanks for what you do for us.
I appreciate you checking it out!
Good show lady thanks
Thanks for watching!
I appreciate this learning/experimental video. I certainly learned some things from this and it was interesting and entertaining. Thank you. :)
Btw. I am from Norway.
I hope you will have a wonderful afternoon!
You keep doing videos the way you are, dont worry the nasty comments. You do a great job of explaining each step.
Morning Erica
Good morning!
I like hearing you talk. 👍
Need to try adjusting the carb on that 170
Runs like a bag of cat turds😂😂😂
It did! lol
Sweet. Run the snot out of it. See what abuse that little ms170 will take. I bought a ms170 this year for up at the cabin. Amazing little saw. Love it. Under $200 bucks can’t say no to it.
It’s a great little saw for the price!
Awesome video great work please keep talking . thank you Erica

Smokes like a James Bond...
Sure does!
Thanks!
"Runs like a bag of cat turds" 😂😂😂😂
If a bag of cat turds could run , that’s what it would sound like! Lol
