If you want to do it totally legit, contqact the publisher of the song (Reseach ownership on ASCAP, BMI, HFA's Songfile) requesting a synchronization license for the game you are creating. They will ask a few questions and come back with a quote for the use of their song in your game. There might be multiple publishers; you'll have to do the same for all.
This was very thorough. Thank you! I have a question about services like Spotify. What is the royalty formula for a Spotify stream that is chosen by a subscriber (not a radio stream)? Would this be considered a digital download, even though the song is not actually paid for by itself? It is instead included in a Spotify subscription. How would that work?
Hey Matthew - this is a long answer, however, I will try to make it brief. Royalty formula is Monthly Gross Revenue * Percentage of Artist Streams * 70% which goes to the rights holders (publisher/label/artist). The formula is entirely dependent on revenue and streams and accounts for Ad Supported vs. Premium User streams (a metric that is easily come by via your devices IP address). This is not a download, as there is no copy being stored on a drive; it is a streaming mechanical on the publishing side and a streaming royalty on the master/label side. Hopefully this clears some things up but let me know if not.
What if the music is written by Americans but the lyrics are written by them and also the vocalist who is from in Africa and still living there. How should the royalties be divided? I'm thinking we should just agree on paper to split it all evenly no matter what, but I'm interested what the laws say about it.
Excusme my name is wilzon i came from Indonesia south east Asia. In my country we don't have PRO and artist in my country usually don't really care about that, so can i registered it to American PRO's.. Than u so much ..🙏🙏🙏🙏
Unless your song is registered with TH-cam's Content ID system, there is no way for them to know that it's yours. If it is, the song will be flagged and the money that the video would receive, if the video is monetized, will be routed to you.
This is a great video! Thank you for laying things out so clearly 🙏🏼 I would love to see a video that goes into artist/producer splits!!
Where do you go for royalties, like how to get it established, or how or when to use them? That's what I don't understand?
Great question and not one that’s easily answered. Where are you located?
thanks dude this was useful
So happy it was valuable to you! Thanks so much for watching.
You rock Robert!
Nathan Dillon hey buddy! Thank you!
If I create a game and I would like to use a small part of a famous song (similar to Fortnite), what would be the best way to do this affordably?

If you create it in the US with a working VISA, then yes. If not, you'll have to register it to Wahana Musik Indonesia (WAMI)
