Had a ton of fun watching this.. I am a biker myself and I ride sport bikes... this video gets a share for showing the truth to the people about pure motorcycling..
It is what it means. People only give advice on how to ride when you're in a group ride and they go over hand signals before if you ask. If you're just passing some bike on the road they're going to have no idea what you mean if you try to use your sign language. The only common gestures are the peace sign to say "sup my dude" and the helmet tap that means there's a cop you're about to pass.
Wow I have been riding for 40 years and never knew there was this much symbolism in a simple wave! We just wave at each other and tap our helmets when there is a speed trap ahead!
Never knew that about the leg signalling in the US. So interesting! I flip between loving the thrill of riding a motorbike and freaking out about riding one 😂
Leg out on a biker means there is a road hazard ahead where he is pointing his foot...It's not RARE, it IS when you are TO do it.... No one I have EVER seen is doing the Doctors Dangle trying to race through a turn on a street... Does this guy even ride? I don't think so...
I've never seen that one here before and was confused on it myself. I usually just throw a thumbs up for the cars since they wouldn't know what the tires side down wave is. Honestly that is the only wave I've ever seen and I've been out there riding going on 6 years now.
@@vtwinner right 😂 it was kinda funny how this was put together. I got a hunch it was to stretch out the video, I mean have you ever seen someone wave the peace sign in the air?
Leg dangling is actually done to avoid riders lean too low on corners. When your knee touches the road, it reminds you not to go lower. Countersteering is the key to successful cornering and not shifting your body weight to either side.
Pretty simple to google it.....". Typically if riding in a group, riders may stick their foot out to draw attention to a hazard on the ground, like oil, sand, etc. Otherwise they might just be stretching their legs a bit."
Except he was wrong about it being the Rossi leg dangle. What he showed was just the way a rider drops their knee to the inside of a turn. The Rossi leg dangle is when the rider takes their foot off the peg and lets their leg dangle for a second coming into a turn.
Hi, great video as always, BUT: dangling the leg is another move, different from the one you described. The knee slider is indeed older and it was developed gradually by motorcycle racers, having the purpose of keeping the bike less inclined in the sharp corners, counterbalancing with the weight of the body, that came into the exterior of the motorcycle towards the center of the bend, to the extreme of sliding the knee, which also helps in turning the bike. Nowadays, riders like MARC MARQUEZ 93 and others even slide their elbows. The dangling is the move of the leg on the inside of the turn, taking it from the footrest and moving it to the side and front, at the end of a straight line during the hard braking. The dangled leg is used both as an aerodinamic brake (kind of light a parachute), as does the upper body of the rider that rises during this manouver and sometimes as a friction brake, as some of the riders drag their soles on the asphalt. Now the dangle was first used by (now) nine time champion Valentino Rossi, but knee dragging was indeed used by other riders before. Dangling is presumably the move that helps the rides assume the position for the incoming turn, hanging alongside the motorcycle. On the knee sliding subject I think it was Kenny the King Roberts that was first dragging, in the style of Jarno Saarinen which was leaning but not dragging the knee on the asphalt. Kenny was the one wearing the special knee sliders as well, which meant no holes in the leathers, but cool reminders of bravery 😎👍

As a rider of over 20 years, it's just a wave to another motorcyclist. Nothing more. There are many different hand signals for riding in a group or to let someone know if there's a cop sitting up the road, but the wave, (which many riders do differently, btw, it's not just 2 fingers), is just that, a wave.
"but the wave, is just that, a wave." - Clearly, to a lot of people, it is not. So whether you think it is not not does not really matter - if you do it to someone else, to them, it might have meaning, it might make their day, it might make them feel included etc. etc. etc. So keep doing it. It's not about you.

Ive being riding for over 30 years and never seen another motorcyclist use the 2 fingers sign, we all either nod or kick our foot out to show respect for another rider.
if you drive on the left, you can also pull in your clutch with your left hand to keep the bike moving smoothly then salute with your right hand before getting back on the throttle and releasing the clutch.
I've been riding since I was 14. I'm now 67 and other than to wave greetings to a fellow rider, this is the first I've ever heard of these "signals". I have my doubts about this.
There's also the tapping your flat hand on top your helmet two or three times when passing another motorcyclist to signal that there are cops ahead. Then there's the elbow up and out, fist over the tank, and multiple trigger finger pull to let your riding buddies now you need to pull over for gas.
Leg dangle is different from dragging the knee as shown in this video. Leg dangle, as "introduced" by Rossi is stretching out the leg towards the front Tire to shift the weight up front while braking. In the video "hanging-off" and knee dragging is mostly used to reduce lean angle in the corner and increase traction and the contact patch of the tires
For people who don't know the head tap on a helmet is a tip to other riders to watch for police near by. Be sure to not let the cops see though it is indeed illegal.
I'm a motorbike rider, and let me tell: protection, especially helmets and gloves, are DEFINITELY necessary; there's something called "windburn" where wind can hit bare skin and eventually cause it to chap. It's REALLY painful, especially on the fingers.

However often beginners riders dont as they arent deep enough into the world of bikes to get it. Also salty Harley riders tend not to do this as much.
I'm also a long time UK rider, agree with the UK head nod to other bikers, it's an unspoken word to a fellow biker, just to say "Hi Brother" most car drivers aren't bikers, so don't get the bike thing & how it makes you feel to be out on the bike, you either have it in u or you don't, my Mrs thinks I love my bikes more than her, "I don't" but it's defo a different kinda love.
I'm a car guy and 20 yrs ago I got my first used motorcycle 250cc single cyl, had the blast of my life, eventually I'll go across bigger engine displacements, got some accidents I lost left leg from a bad surgery, people think I won't be able to ride again, maybe it's not the motorcycle I want to ride but hey I'm still riding 2 wheels even if it's a 150cc Chinese scooter
Ive never had another biker wave at me wave their hand in the sky with the peace symbol, they always throw it out with the peace sign pointing diagonally down and out with no shaking. It would be funny to see this in person tho

Honestly, 2 fingers are used because it's the most aerodynamic way to wave without pointing. If you wave with you're entire hand the wind throws your arm back.

To answer your question, yes I've wanted to ride; for a long time now. There's a really nice Honda Goldwing in the garage. Just waiting to get time to take a real ride.
State of California did a study and found that allowing motorcyclist to pass between vehicles enables them to clear traffic and it's safer and actually reduces motorcycle involved accidents. But California enacted helmet law which did reduce deaths by head injuries the deaths actually went up due to broken necks. Helmets don't save lives they take Lives. They reduce a Riders peripheral vision and muffle sounds around them. This prevents them from seeing and hearing vehicles beside them and behind them. Which causes more accidents.

To answer your question, yes I've wanted to ride; for a long time now. There's a really nice Honda Goldwing in the garage. Just waiting to get time to take a real ride.
GO FOR IT!! YOLO..
Sure I'd love to it helps me relax
State of California did a study and found that allowing motorcyclist to pass between vehicles enables them to clear traffic and it's safer and actually reduces motorcycle involved accidents. But California enacted helmet law which did reduce deaths by head injuries the deaths actually went up due to broken necks. Helmets don't save lives they take Lives. They reduce a Riders peripheral vision and muffle sounds around them. This prevents them from seeing and hearing vehicles beside them and behind them. Which causes more accidents.
