Liverpool 5-0 Derby County 1978-79

  • Liverpool had won eight of their first nine league matches in 1978-79 when Derby travelled to Anfield. Indeed, the Reds would occupy top spot in Division One for every week of the season, except for the opening day. Following the glory days of Brian Clough and Dave Mackay, the Rams meanwhile were now a fading force in English football. Here's Gerald Sinstadt.

When you watch a lot of it, they were so far ahead of everyone. Counter attack, bits of pressing, long ball, intricate passing, great defence. People say the modern teams are great, but this lot were a class above, almost like watching Barca in their pomp. Utd under Fergy were amazing, but they were simply determined, mean. These guys played their way to wins more often than not.

Many would say that team of 1978-9 was the greatest Liverpool team ever. Every player was so assured, comfortable on the ball and playing with supreme confidence. Although only 16 goals were conceded that season, it's oft been said their greatest strength was the midfield - Souness, Terry Mac, Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy whom were also great finishers.
