Great memories of being brought up in Salford , remember walking most days through Buile Hill park to go to school St Lawrence’s and playing in there also at Chimney pot park close by.. Had a drive round Salford precinct couple years back couldn’t believe it was the same place and took me a while to find where I lived for close on 20 years Edgehill Close..
This was lovely... from an old Salfordian. 61 yrs old. I was 11 at the time of filming. To see young girls having responsibility with infants still amazes me. I used to do this...
Some good memories there. I lived round the corner from Buile Hill Park c1960 and remember the museum, the pitch & putt and getting chased off the swings by the Parky because I went to Salford Grammar School (the swings were out of bounds to SGS' pupils). I went to Light Oaks Primary before SGS, but never visited Light Oaks Park for some reason. Used to play on the sandhills at the top of Cholmondeley Rd and remember a pair of old houses nearby, one was called Rivington Hall or similar. We went "tracking" (now called BMX) down some steep slopes in Oakwood Park. I was in the 36th Salford Scouts, based at Holy Angels Church. I earned pocket money as a grocer's delivery boy for a shop on T'Heights.
I wonder how many generations of infants have fed the ducks in Lightoaks Park? I had no idea of its dark history until watching this. Wonderful film. Thanks for posting.
THIS WAS BRILLIANT TO WATCH & ALSO NICE TO LISTEN TO THE COMMENTARY 😃. I'M PROUD OF MY SALFORD 6 HERITAGE, I HAD GREAT FUN GROWING UP IN STANHOPE ROAD & ATTENDING, SUMMERVILLE COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL 👍. I FAILED MY 11+ EXAMS 😖 & WENT TO "HOPE HALL SECONDARY SCHOOL" (LATER BECOMING HOPE HIGH).
Cinephoto, one of our best customers in the early 60's! I was also a pupil at Broughton Modern, and a former employee of Lawrence and Nicholas Ltd, photographic wholesalers, on the Crescent.
Nice film of the pleasant side of things. It would also be interesting to see a contrasting one about the drug culture that would have been in full swing at that time and has never retreated.
In about 1962 we lived in Kersal flats they were named after poets, Shelley was ours, we were high up as I remember at age 4 lowering my toy crane wire down from the balcony to tap on the neighbours windows, always made my own fun!
What a pity that all this hasn’t been retained. The local authority would not even care for the old Buile Hill Park Museum! Now nothing but a dump and home for North West crime.
Does anyone have pictures of the orchid amusement arcade on cross lane which was on the same row as the carlton cinema.....Please let me know..I have been looking for years with no luck..it closed in 1989
@@azshaw123 Did Lucas ever give you those pictures? And 2 good groups to join on Facebook about Salford are "We Grew Up In Salford" and "Salfords Yester Years" :)
Lived in an off license me mam an dad had, 80 Eccles New Rd, Salford 5, always proud of the ‘5’ bit hehe, 1967-72 I remember the new money coming in and the endless arguments that ‘we were all bein’ fiddled..’…lost my eyesight in me right eye in an accident in an alley, 1969
Remember when they brought postcodes in? We were M5!! M5? Surely we should have been S5, but I think that the 'S' was given to Sheffield. We were NOT Manchester. Never have been. Never will be. From M5 3JF of West Park St.
Magic I'm of that time. When kids played together. Our imagination would run riot as soon as we stepped outside into our world, our world of make believe. The attitude from our upbringing was, we're all in this together, in good and bad time's we have your back. Poverty does that it brings the best out in the majority and the worst out in the minority. That apart nothing that we have now can compare in terms of the people. The issue that has destroyed every community in every country on the planet has to be alcohol and drugs to name two substances. Addiction. There has been very little attempts to try for a cure/cures for addictions . All the money is going on treatment and treatment centres. This is a discrace for medical pracricers who sold their soul's, GREED. HIPPOCRATIC OATH FOR HYPOCRITES 🤑🤫.

Grand fun. Wonderful legacy from those estates.
I was still at Broughton Modern when this was made but six years later, I was working at Cinephoto, on The Crescent, the people who made this :)

visit www.kersalflats.co.uk and all but one of the flats were named after poets.
I live behind what is the old fire station, right opposite the university and Peel Park
Still THE best place to live in all Greater Manchester!
Wot! No Ordsall Park?
