Dixie....your my hero🙌 Ever since I was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin lymphoma in 2012 you tube is a main staple in my life. Your positive attitude is why I enjoy your channel and of course the scenery. Thanks again for sharing your adventures with us and inspiring me to keep pushing on. Be safe❤Jeff from the Hoosier state.👏🇺🇸
Dixie, you inspire me every time I watch your videos. My mom has stage 4 metastic breast cancer and my sister was recently diagnosed with MS. I've been battling depression while I try to be strong for them but it gets hard sometimes. Your videos have brought joy in times of stress and I appreciate it. A thru-hike is now on the bucket list. Thank you so much for what you do and safe travels.
Being from the South and am an avid hiker (love your accent) (btw) I'm so happy you discovered and are following your passion, and also that you have a trusted companion (Perk) during your early life's journey.......later in your life you Will look back....to this time......and be amazed, like we all who love you.......
We have so many beautiful hiking trails in Michigan. Mostly short day hike type places but its really worth it. I love Saugatuck Dunes State park you take a fairly short hike that ends on top of a sand dune right next to Lake Michigan.
Hey Dixie, glad to see you're feeling well after that 28. Always a good sign for the rest of the hike for me when my body reacts well to giving it that first big challenge of the trail. I think it won't be long till you have your trail legs :)
Your photography is ... extraordinary!! Btw , thank you also Dixie for sharing your gear info in a previous vid about that special lens moment thingy which we'd never heard of. We are getting one for our next hike. We don't expect to be as deft at it as you but looking forward to giving it a good hard go. :) go well honey you're amaze balls X
Hey Dixie, always look forward to your progress and I think you have a very good blend of commentary and scenery in your videos, great stuff........Trek-on !
I think it would be cool if you guys filmed separate clips and personal interviews of the camera guy and do a feature movie after the trail... just to document what would go through his mind.
Agreed on the LP 3.5. They are decidedly smaller than the three other Altra models I've worn. They are also seemingly designed more for hiking now than actual running.
Re: your finger owie and tetanus, I'm guessing people were worried about the barbed wire being rusty. Rust has nothing to do with tetanus. The association with rusty nails has more to do with the nails having been in the soil than anything, because the C. tetani spores are typically found in soil, "horse apples" and cow manure. If you've had a tetanus booster within the past 5 years (or 10, even), you should be okay for most skin tears, cuts, scrapes, and open wounds. For puncture wounds (like from stepping on a nail that's in the dirt), I would err on the low side in terms of years since your last booster. When in doubt, contact a physician (of course). We're enjoying your CDT adventure! Happy trails.
Aaron In general, that's true. But for certain injuries, especially deep, dirty puncture wounds, doctors will often advise a patient to get another booster, even if if it's been less than 10 years.
I just had my tetanus booster and it included a booster for whooping cough. When I told her it was time to renew, the doc recommended it for that alone and said the vaccination just doesn’t last like they’d expected. Interesting!
Dixie! Just found your channel yesterday and have watched your AT and PCT full documentaries already. You're an inspiration! If you get the chance and get to Salmon, Idaho or near there. Not sure if you plan on going through town when you're there. About 15 miles south of Salmon, there is the best hot spring in the entire state of Idaho: Goldbug Hot Springs. If you're looking for a relaxing day or something in that area, I highly recommend it. It's probably my favorite place in the entire state. You can probably catch a ride from someone going from Salmon to the Challis area. Beautiful area. Lovely state!
Hi Dixie. Really enjoying your adventure on the CDT. Watched your AT and the PCT and really cheering you on for the Triple Crown! You're a brave soul and an inspiration. Thank you. I know it's way too early but curiosity wins out here ... any clue as to when you might hit the Glacier/Waterton Park area near the end of your trek? Your British Columbia fans are cheering for you all and wishing you the very best.
You can come to Indiana for some hikes. The knobstone is said to be a lot like the A T. It's only roughly 50 miles, most people do it in 3 days. There are other trails nearby in the Hoosier national Forest that there is an effort being made to connect the trails together.
Mark Gramlin wouldn't that be something. Dixie finally visiting Indiana and hiking the KT. She could do it in early april then stay in Louisville to experience Thunder over Louisville and the whole Ky Derby festival. I'm sure Perk would love visiting the Bourbon capital.
When you were talking about the trail, trail markings and such to be sure you are going in the right direction reminded me of Boy Scouts... It would be easy to layout your trail map with your compass (to magnetic north) and just lay your compass on the trail and write down the compass headings for the parts of the trail you hope to walk the next day... Not only is it a good thing to do should all your electronics die... it's just kinda a fun activity before bed or while making a journal entry. PLUS, just check your compass to know if you are going in the correct direction.
You've probably covered it. How do you secure your food each night? I understand there are variables: parts of a particular trail may require bear canisters and there are areas where there are no trees. But do you try to always hang it from a tree/bush when they are available?
Hey Dixie, what thru hike are you planning on doing after? We have a trail in Australia called the Bicentennial National Trail and it goes for 5330km (3312 miles)
What are your projections looking like for snow once you reach Colorado? What dates do you see that happening? Was just up there this past weekend and the limited amount we have is beginning to melt off a bit. (Though there are parts over 100%)
Hey there, glad to see you are doing well. If you get cold, don't come to Michigan in the winter. Spring, Summer, and Fall are awesome though! Stay safe!
Dixie, Great post! Best wishes...I hope you like the Gila, I think it's a special place. When people ask you about trying the local cuisine they might be referring to New Mexican food and in particular red and/or green chiles! The question you often hear in restaurants there is "red or green?" which means do you want red or green chile sauce on your breakfast burrito or whatever you've got. 3rd choice is "Christmas" which is both red AND green!
How has your Microgreens business doin' before ya left on hike. I started a lil garden this year(heirloom brandywine tomatoes, Cherokee Greasy beans to make leather bretches, yellow/red bell peppers, Habeneros & turneps). I will be goin up a size in LonePeaks 3.5....SO HAPPY YOU TOLD ME ABOUT THEM MY FEET HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER SINCE I SWITCHED!!!! THANKS GIRL!!!
Hey Dixie! Just wondering if you've ever hiked on the Pinhoti or any of the trails at Cheaha or Talladega National Forest? I get up there pretty often since I don't live too far from there. Thank you so much for all the great videos.
Dixie, some of the foot blisters (especially around the toe area) may be caused by a fungal infection. Try applying some anti-fungal cream whenever you begin to feel itching or pain between your toes. Walmart has a cheap version of Clotrimazole (@88 cents/tube) that works well for me.
Here's a tip for Michigan travel, skip lower Michigan and head straight to the Upper Peninsula. It's awesome here. Tons of awesome hikes. You can even catch the ferry to Isle Royal for some moose and wolf viewing.
You said you're interested in "going international". If long hiking in Europe is in the cards, look into the Via Alpina (Trieste to Nice/Monton) and the newly established Via Dinarica (Balkans). Both are serious thru-hiking trails taking several months, with the Via Dinarica newly established and still not marked in parts. In many parts of Europe (esp. Switzerland), camping up in the mountains is not allowed and people instead overnight in mountain huts which can be manned or unmanned. Many of the Swiss and Austrian mountain huts are simply fabulous. Here the link to the huts owned by the Swiss Mountain Association: www.sac-cas.ch/huetten/huette-suchen.html. Remember that you'll need to obtain a special long-term visa as the regular visa-waiver entry is limited to a 3 month period.
You are inspiring :) watched all your videos so far. Question: do you plan on ever hiking abroad? There are some awesome trails in South America (Inca trail or salkantey trek) or the Camino de Santiago in Spain/Portugal?

Keep trying on this one: glucosamine chondroitin to support the cartiledge in your knees and feet, twice a day. Your body will thank you. Once that cartiledge is gone, it is irreplacable. So extra stress needs extra support. Vitamin section of any grocery of pharmacy.
most herbal supplements and vitamins are a waste of money, and briefly reading about glucosomine (including a study where outcomes for those on glucosomine were worse than those on a placebo!) suggests it is no different.
I'm glad that you guys are all okay take a zero maybe 2 if you have to I am late to this like 2 hours or 3 take care of young lady and your friends as well behind the camera
Dixie, if you guys take extra glucosamine chondroitin morning and evening, your body and joints will thank you now and in the future. Once that cartilege is gone, it's gone! Your bodies need it. You can get it at any grocery store or pharmacy in the vitamin section. It is very good for your knees and feet. Extra stress needs extra support.
Question: Wouldn't it be a good idea for someone hiking the CDT to take a can of paint to do rocks thru the desert section since it was so hard for you to find your way? They could create blazes like the white ones on the AT, but RED that would show up in the desert? It is worrying to think that someone coming alone could get lost and die because none of the people before them left a marked trail. Do you even leave cairns thru the desert that people after you could follow?
Dixie, look up "tree bath" zen monks take long walks in forests to cleanse themselves with the air of trees. Modern science confirms that trees give off all sorts of aerosols that maybe beneficial.
Hi Dixie! I've been watching your video for the last couple yrs...first time to comment. What is your advice (assuming you have ordered items from REI) purchasing from REI versus an Outfitter. REI has many benefits that I'm not sure an Outfitter does. There is a local Outfitter where I live versus the closest REI is 3 hrs away. Would it be worth mentioning this to the Outfitter? Thank you for the time you take creating your videos! I look forward each one!

Thank you for sharing this with us. Happy trails!
Common courtesy, common sense not so common anymore...so true dhat, thx Dixie!
Keep pushing along Dixie! Love the videos!
Looking good, keep on trucking, just read your Mother's Day tribute to your mom, well done 👍

thank you for saving the cow 🐄
after you finish the CDT you should totally go try for Mt. Everest :) . Would love to see videos of that!
Keep up the great work!!!! We here at Outdoor Exposure love watching your vids!!!!

Have you thought about hiking Te Araroa? Would definitely watch that, as it's at the top of my list!
Have you tried the backcountry navigator app on your phone? It's really decent topo maps, etc. I use it all the time.
Here's a tip for Michigan travel, skip lower Michigan and head straight to the Upper Peninsula. It's awesome here. Tons of awesome hikes. You can even catch the ferry to Isle Royal for some moose and wolf viewing.
Go, Dixie, Go!!! Go, Dixie, Go!!!
Hey Dixie! Wonder Woman Shelley here… class of 2017 on the AT. It’s time that Aaron has an official trail name… How about WING-MAN?

Joseph Fore Yayyy! Do it!
Just love your videos Dixie
Hey, is your enreach the plus with texting, or the non text model? Have you had a good signal so far? I'm thinking of getting one.
How much time does it take to get all the pictures and video? How much does it slow you down?
From Indiana here. If you need a reason to come here, we have the Knobstone trail. We call it the little AT. It is 45-49 miles straight up and downs.
I love the mountain house pad thai! Sooo delish
Wondiferous Dixie are y'all gonna see the Gila Cliff Dwellings just north of silver city?
Thank you Dixie. I really enjoy your videos.
You are inspiring :) watched all your videos so far. Question: do you plan on ever hiking abroad? There are some awesome trails in South America (Inca trail or salkantey trek) or the Camino de Santiago in Spain/Portugal?
Hey Dixie when do you think you will finish the trail and praying for y'all tell perk howdy y'all go !!!!
How much for water caches? has anyone taken your water?
Love your pixs & vlogs. You have to remember you are getting older now & your body will take longer to adapt.
You should play Dwight Yokum "Dixie" on the harmonica.......
The winds are awesome! Please consider treating your clothing with Pemethrin , as the skeeters can be pretty bothersome there in the summer.
What does she mean by type1/type2 fun?

How much water are you having to carry in the dessert
I just went and bought some Altra 3.5s yesterday, size 10s. I'm usually a size 7.5. The sizes do run much smaller.
Keep pushin’ North Grasshopper . . . Buena suerte . . .
how do we know when you will do another Q and A?
Never mind. Found it.

If you're looking to do international you should look into the everest base camp trek. It's only 2 weeks, but looks amazing.
I feel really terrible for Aaron knowing what happens to his leg after this. The 28 so early probably not looking so good in hindsight. I hope he was able to get some better shoes (havent seen it addressed yet, I dont think).

Very cool article. Thanks for sharing.
Steve Sifuentez I wasn't sure either
Elk hunting is definitely type II fun.
Hey @Dixie Do ya think ya may ever attempt the IAT - National Scenic Ice Age Trail? It's rugged with so many different microclimates and views it is really amazing. We've been working on it for 2 years to get through it section-by-section. 👣😍

have you thought of walking the great wall of china
The wife and I would love to know what ur plans after completing the triple crown what other trails would you consider doing
Your cool!
Desert dogs get thorns in their feet, rattlesnake bites, and lost. You made the right decision.

Katie Cakes yes I think it’s because it was a live q&a on Facebook

How come you don't get into bike packing...
