Agree with the McAfee Knob / Tinker Cliffs area. I tell thru-hikers, when you hit the Whites, take your time, give your body a break, and wait for good weather for the stunning views. In Maine don't miss the Baldpate, Bigelows and, of course, the Mahoosuc Range. OH -- and my beloved Mt. Greylock in Massachusetts.

I have an Xtherm. XPed is a brand. Xtherm is the highly insulated version of the XLite. It is very warm. I think the R value is around 6. If you like the XLite and are looking for a warmer version of it, you'll be very happy with the Xtherm. It can even be a year-round pad, allowing you to kick off the quilt or sleeping bag in cooler temps than you normally would.
I've been watching your videos since finding them after doing a search on you tube for gear suggestions or some such thing. After watching your gear video where you had everything strewn all over the floor, I went back and watched your entire AT video collection. And have, of course, followed along your hikes on the PCT and CDT. I just want you to know how inspirational you have been to many. Little, blonde, southern girl next door decides to chuck her corporate, engineering life to follow her dream and find herself and what will make her happy. Did your research but had no idea what you were getting into. And have since parlayed that hike into a new lifestyle and revenue stream and love. Simply amazing. And as I said, truly inspirational. Annnddd I've been able to use your experience as a beginner to show my girlfriend that she can too. And that a someone who she can identify with, loves something that I do. So I went out and bought her some equipment ad we're gonna get her out there too and see if she enjoys it as much as I. So.....just thanks. For being you. For being the inspiration that you are. I hope I am in the correct Q & A. I love your channel, but never thought that I would have anything to add. Luck would have it that I met a two-time AT thru-hiker who saw me struggling with my Ramen noodles this weekend at the Springer Mountain shelter. With his hands he demonstrated how to break up the dry noodles into reasonable pieces before starting to cook. I haven't tried it, but it makes sense.
I'm glad you post these Q & A's on here. I am on Patreon, but because I work nights, I end up sleeping during the time you do them live. Always glad to see your new postings though. If you do the trail in New Zealand, that would be a winter hike here I believe, since their summer is during our winter. Smash those Ramen Noodle while they are still dry in the bag then dump em in the water. Instead of noodle you have a mashed pasta that you can mix other stuff with and eat with a spoon.
In Australia we have dingos, they howl during the night, but are usually restricted to areas west of our Great Dividing Range. I encounted a howling pack one night in central Queensland when I was camping solo, it can be an a little scary, but they only eat babies....haha.
For the one question, I've been using the XTherm year round. I love it. Most nights I use my normal Kelty mummy bag zipped open as a quilt since it's so comfortable. It's a fair bit thicker which is great since I'm a side sleeper. It's only a couple ounces heavier than the Xlite. In comes with an inflation stuff bag which is nice rather than huffing and puffing.

Hi Dixie 🤗 Te Araroa is pronounced pretty much as it looks if you split it like this: Te Ara Roa, but try to roll your r’s. And the ‘Te’ is a bit more like ‘tey’. Most Kiwis butcher it too so don’t worry! It goes near my parents beach house in the Marlborough Sounds (the top of the South Island), I can hopefully provide some kiwi hospitality when you’re down here.

A response from some one who lives in WY on bear country; the practice of 300' separation from sleeping area to kitchen-social area to food storage, the bear country 300' feet of separation triangle is adequate. Beats stopping mid-afternoon stride interrupted with dinner and then hiking on. A good ultralight canister like the Bearikade paired with an Ursack beats the hell out of hanging every day except in places like Yellowstone or Glacier NP's were they have hanging poles or bear boxes in the designated campsites you have to stay in . The bigger threat here in the Central Rockies is the whole host of rodents and the wonderful critters they bring with them to your unprotected food. On a grins note; yep plan and prepare for potty before you need to go. And communicate! The guy who sleeps with his food bag is opting for early select out...backcountry Darwin award.

RE: The Photo book: I love the idea of it but you're so right in how cost-expensive it is for publishing color photos. IIRC (from working as an editor on a book 2 years ago now)... the base price was $.10/page for b&W and $.78/page for color (and then even more for glossy.) So publishing something like a coffee table book would be, without a publisher to front the costs, pretty expensive. But if the market is there, why not? HTH and Love the vids!
It's all personal opinion to bear spray or not, I think you should always get 2 and use one for practice in a windy situation if you plan to use one. Practice drawing and ready for spraying several times maybe a few times a day until you are used to doing easy then do your practice spray at a spot picked out for a target. It would be great if the bear approached from a down wind path and you knew the bear was there. Nothing will stop a momma bear with cubs but distance and not getting into her space. Some might say that it is the bears flavoring for you. We have lost a few people in the last few years in and around Alaska so always be alert and make noise when in bear areas.

Looking at doing the TA in about 6 years with my daughter as she would be 18 at that stage. Do a lot of hunting around the Ruahine and have done the Whanganui 3 times
The Whimsical Woman is hiking the PCT she has had mountain lions stalk her for like 3 or 4 day.She almost quit the trail dont blame her a bit if she did.But she is back on over 2000 miles down. I think I would rather see a bear over a mountain lion.
Watch her last 2 video's I think one followed her for several miles and she was hiking all alone and one walked right through her camp few mins after she got in her tent.
There have only been 2 deaths by mountain lions in the US in the last 100 years. They're curious about us (as felines tend to be), but they view us as a danger and as a precaution, don't attack people and stay far away. I doubt your friend was ever in danger. Native Americans had lived in concert with mountain lions long enough before we colonized for mountain lions (a very smart animal) to adapt to our presence and learn to stay away from us. I've had my own close call with a mountain lion. I lived in Oregon for some time and went exploring the BLM property behind my property to scout out viable dirt bike trails when I came across a GIANT Puma less than half a mile from my house. We made eye contact and I just stood, frozen in awe. She also stood still. We stared at each other for what seemed like forever but was probably 30 seconds or so. She began to turn around, so I mimicked her and did the same. We still had our eyes on each other, and each of us turning around was a slow process. Once she was about 3/4 of the way turned away from me she darted off into the woods, and I headed straight back home.

Overall, deaths are very few, attacks more often but still not frequent. Still, you never want to take anything for granted. Kids are considerably more in danger than adults. Be prudent folks and don't take anything for granted.

Don't Australian's have dingos? I love hearing coyotes in Joshua Tree! They are talking to each other like the ravens. I love all your videos. My heart is slightly broken because I had to cancel my JMT hike this summer. You PCT trip really compelled me to try the JMT. Well, maybe next year! I got the gear and the planning down. It is so cool, that you will hike with your mom! Love that. I'm going to be 50 soon and I think seeing these places when your body still can is important. We all need to get outdoors more. When you sleep on your back, you SNORE and get sleep apnea! I had this even when I was young and thin. Side sleeping is better and when you're pregnant, your belly is like a keel that makes you sleep on your side! LOL. so weird. I notice when I go car camping and get up at night to go pee, I can hear the men snoring LOUDLY in the campsites next to me! It's kinda funny but I worry about their health when they are close to middle age. I can hear them stop breathing for a few seconds through their tents from 100 feet away. Then they gasp loudly to get air.... Well, I hope they're still ok. They were all over weight. So, hike and lose that belly!! #loseyourbelly
dang! I have heard that some coyotes have become more aggressive towards people lately. In Joshua Tree they tell you to "Haze not Praise" the coyotes. Similar to feeding bears. They associate humans with easy food. They stop hunting.........hummmm. Sounds a lot like humans too. We sit still too much and do not work for our food. Wonder why Americans are FAT. I don't. I'm fat from my inactivity. I'm itching to get outdoors! lol.
Yeah but there's mostly no 'pure' dingos left, majority are interbred with feral dogs now. I've never seen a dingo outside of a zoo, I think they're pretty uncommon. I see more foxes than anything else and they're not native to Australia.
I'm no expert but, with dingos and wild dogs, I expect it's less to do with the breed 'purity' than domestication and (pack) social structure... and is probably a similar situation with coyotes.
I think getting enough sleep is better for your skin than having your face in a pillow. Wrinkles are more about genetics, sun exposure and tobacco use. Safe travels
Not knocking you, this is just unusual for you to not clearly state what particular item you are comfortable carrying. You stated you researched to get the best protection for you buck, you show it but the label isn't legible. You even refer to it as, "This one." What Bear Spray are YOU comfortable carrying? Ive slept outside 3 full summers now, may through oct. Hearing the coyotes is pretty cool. They get those pesky ground squirrels.

The Everest base camp trek is only 14-15 days. That's on my bucket list.

The Whimsical Woman is hiking the PCT she has had mountain lions stalk her for like 3 or 4 day.She almost quit the trail dont blame her a bit if she did.But she is back on over 2000 miles down. I think I would rather see a bear over a mountain lion.
Watch her last 2 video's I think one followed her for several miles and she was hiking all alone and one walked right through her camp few mins after she got in her tent.
Probably due to the barf smell of her bag. Get rid of the smell, no more mountain lions. That's my guess anyway
There have only been 2 deaths by mountain lions in the US in the last 100 years. They're curious about us (as felines tend to be), but they view us as a danger and as a precaution, don't attack people and stay far away. I doubt your friend was ever in danger. Native Americans had lived in concert with mountain lions long enough before we colonized for mountain lions (a very smart animal) to adapt to our presence and learn to stay away from us.
I've had my own close call with a mountain lion. I lived in Oregon for some time and went exploring the BLM property behind my property to scout out viable dirt bike trails when I came across a GIANT Puma less than half a mile from my house. We made eye contact and I just stood, frozen in awe. She also stood still. We stared at each other for what seemed like forever but was probably 30 seconds or so. She began to turn around, so I mimicked her and did the same. We still had our eyes on each other, and each of us turning around was a slow process. Once she was about 3/4 of the way turned away from me she darted off into the woods, and I headed straight back home.

Various times throughout many years there are attacks. For a list google the wiki page: List of fatal cougar attacks in North America
Note this is the fatality list, there are plenty of other attacks, and numerous stalkings especially since most people never know they have been stalked.
Overall, deaths are very few, attacks more often but still not frequent. Still, you never want to take anything for granted. Kids are considerably more in danger than adults. Be prudent folks and don't take anything for granted.

Don't Australian's have dingos? I love hearing coyotes in Joshua Tree! They are talking to each other like the ravens. I love all your videos. My heart is slightly broken because I had to cancel my JMT hike this summer. You PCT trip really compelled me to try the JMT. Well, maybe next year! I got the gear and the planning down. It is so cool, that you will hike with your mom! Love that. I'm going to be 50 soon and I think seeing these places when your body still can is important. We all need to get outdoors more. When you sleep on your back, you SNORE and get sleep apnea! I had this even when I was young and thin. Side sleeping is better and when you're pregnant, your belly is like a keel that makes you sleep on your side! LOL. so weird. I notice when I go car camping and get up at night to go pee, I can hear the men snoring LOUDLY in the campsites next to me! It's kinda funny but I worry about their health when they are close to middle age. I can hear them stop breathing for a few seconds through their tents from 100 feet away. Then they gasp loudly to get air.... Well, I hope they're still ok. They were all over weight. So, hike and lose that belly!! #loseyourbelly
+Sin D Yes, Dingos and wild/mixed dogs. Mostly, they keep away but when food's around they have been known to attack (probably wild/mixed dogs).
dang! I have heard that some coyotes have become more aggressive towards people lately. In Joshua Tree they tell you to "Haze not Praise" the coyotes. Similar to feeding bears. They associate humans with easy food. They stop hunting.........hummmm. Sounds a lot like humans too. We sit still too much and do not work for our food. Wonder why Americans are FAT. I don't. I'm fat from my inactivity. I'm itching to get outdoors! lol.
Yeah but there's mostly no 'pure' dingos left, majority are interbred with feral dogs now. I've never seen a dingo outside of a zoo, I think they're pretty uncommon. I see more foxes than anything else and they're not native to Australia.
Australia is a weird Island where the toilet, swishes in the opposite direction! I've seen videos of big spiders in Australia. nope, don't like that.
I'm no expert but, with dingos and wild dogs, I expect it's less to do with the breed 'purity' than domestication and (pack) social structure... and is probably a similar situation with coyotes.
