For everyone saying they threw in grand finals, allow me to explain what the tempest umisho match up is before you make yourself look dumber. If you’ve watched any amount of North American strive in the past few months you’d know that top 2 is basically always tempest umisho. At the very start of their show down, tempest beat umisho by counter picking off Leo into ky/sin. That was during CEOTaku. It’s needless to say, that umisho has tempest’s Leo down to a science, which is why he swapped. During ECT, tempest again tried to counter pick ky against umisho in grand finals, which she was ready for this time. This time she shot the counter pick down like it was nothing. This left tempest in a checkmate situation where he either plays a weaker secondary which umisho has obviously planned for, or doesn’t take any chances and play Leo again. He would probably lose anyway because he just can’t seem to figure out her sol. I don’t remember if he swapped back to Leo or not during ECT, but the conclusion was the same. Umisho easily reset the bracket and beat tempest. Now we come to frosties. Again umisho and tempest meet in grands. From playing her just before in winners, he knows that his Leo still can’t deal with her sol. He’s obviously not confident that his ky/sin are good enough currently, so he switches to elphelt. Elphelt may not be a great character, but she’s certainly a cheap one, and winners finals showed that. Tempest has also been excited for elphelt and practiced her a bunch beforehand. Understanding that none of his characters are ready for umisho, he takes a gamble and plays elphelt instead to see if he can gimmick her out. After it does work for a round, umisho switches to sin who she’s been practicing and has a good matchup against elphelt. Sin is also currently top 5 so this idea that she’s sandbagging when she’s going from one top 5 character to another is ridiculous. Umisho starts winning games again so she can’t switch. Tempest is now stuck between switching back to Leo and maybe winning before she switches back to sol and stomps him, or trying to ride it out with elphelt and take the gimmicky secondary fight. He choose the latter and won a few games, but lost in the end. If you’re not involved with the meta of the game or don’t understand the history, maybe take a second to think about why people aren’t playing their normal characters before assuming it’s sandbagging. This isn’t legacy guilty gear, most people aren’t character loyalist. And even then, guilty gear has always been a ridiculous match up heavy game so compensating for that is very smart.
This is such a long winded response when Tempest admitted they felt good about elphelt and if they couldn’t get started against Sol with Leo it would be useless.
@@null-wq5cp also it’s worth stating that I wrote all of this before I heard about this. It’s my first time hearing about the fact that he addressed that and I wrote that all down from memory
