This is an old restaurant. Growing up, my parents always took me for a fancy dinner once a month. And i’m 32 this year! Right across the street where the arab restaurant, used to be my kindergarten that i attended. Such memories!
I live in Australia. And whenever I fly via Malaysia to wherever, always stop by in KL for my steak at The Ship in Bk Bintang. ALWAYS. Victoria is very very similar to The Ship.
Fyi Victoria Station was 1 of the most in-thing & hip place to be in the 80s when it first opened its door in 1989. Everyone was like, "Hey! Let's have dinner at VS, the Best steakhouse in town!" And it was like winning a lottery if you get invited to one! Those days the Chefs & staffs took pride in their food presentation, taste & service. Why? Because the founder was a Chef before, followed by his son and now grandson; a family business of 3 generations! So, Only 5 outlets in Malaysia, 2 in Penang, 1 in Ampang & 2 in Damansara; to open another one would cost them approximately RM 1 million with all the renos etc. So, probably the reason why it's steep on its pricing and other menu although not The Best one in town currently! And they mainly import their steaks from New Zealand & USA. Yeah! The name of the resto actually came from a train station during their holidays in London! 😉
If you guys are hanging around in KL, you guys should go to Desa Park City, which is where I am staying at, there are a lot of western breakfast and shops and a park with a lake.

The moment you scoop the butter onto the steak, you have made a big mistake. It was meant for the corn. But you could ask the waiter for extra butter for the corn actually
BS ! Go to most restaurants in Europe, USA or look at any recipes from (most) western chefs, myself included and they will rest the steak, and quite often they will put a little butter on it. Here in Malaysia, it's different, eat almost straight out of the pan, covered in a Gallon of Sauce and/or Chilli SOS, so depressing to see it like that, what a waste of good meat! I prepared a Lasagne for a friend and his family, he poured Chilli SOS over all his meal. His daughter was so embarrassed and scolded him for ruining a beautiful Italian recipe. BTW "The reason steak needs to rest is that the juices need time to redistribute, otherwise it will just flow away, leaving you with a brown, overcooked piece of meat. Another important thing to know is the residual heat will continue to cook your steak after you've removed it from the grill or the pan"
I did lots of stupid things in my life, but top of the list must be when I took a girl I fancy to Victoria Station to impress her, back in the 90's, when I was just started working and had VERY little money. I ordered the cheapest on menu and spent the whole night worrying about the bill. Thankfully I had just enough money to pay then, with some spare to take mini bus home. Girl wasn't impress and I was dumped not even a month later.

If you like your steak just with salt and pepper, then you should go to Maria's in Bangsar or Jakes in Bukit Damansara. If you want an old fashion sizzling steak with excellent gravy, then try the steaks at Coliseum in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. The Coliseum is an old colonial restaurant and has an old feel atmosphere. And don't forget to start with the Stuffed Crab if you're at The Coliseum.
Victoria station is considered reasonable...but i remember those days not far from Victoria was Roadhouse grill where the buns are so awesome . I could just only ate buns. It's long gone
Most steak/ burgers in Malaysia is covered in lots of sauces. Its overpowering the actual taste of meat. Always ask for the gravy to be served separately. 🥩🍔
Best steak cuts in my opinion would be filet mignon and rib eye. Season both sides with salt and pepper, pan broil with butter. Cook each side 3-4 minutes. Medium/medium rare. Serve with mashed or baked potato. Occasionally with gravy, but never covering the steak. Gotta respect the meat.
Victoria Station may have been the best steak in town 20-30 years ago, coz there were less western food options, less expats, less exposure to western cuisine. But now, with all the REAL steaks (as your mentioned purely just good meat with salt and pepper) available in KL, Victoria Station is long time not the best steakhouse in town anymore. Here's where you find the REAL steaks you are looking for at reasonable price - Pampas Steakhouse (2 branches near Bukit Bintang area), Maria's Steakhouse in Bangsar, Beato Dry Aged Steakhouse in Bangsar (or Publika), and many more :)
Actually there were more expats then in the 1960s and 1970s- the British army, australian army, the planters, the trading house owners and managers etc - mostly business owners and top management expats and officers, mainly english and australian, fewer americans, so there was a lot of authentic western food then and they did leave behind their legacy and culture of formal dining here, though some went back to their country but many stayed on after retirement. After that Malaysia went through a lot of "Malaysianisation" of many government and corporate bodies in the 1980s followed with change in tastes and preferences...and then people "forgot" how to make western food correctly.
I like PONDEROSA in Canada! All you can eat salad and fish finger. I like the pound beef. And in Montreal I had a nice meal of steak after I had my wisdom tooth extracted.(not immediately, but after my gum was healed). I like beef steak!!!!

Most probably meat are imported from New Zealand...NZ beef are better quality than Australian. When I was a working as a head chef in Malaysia, I always go with NZ. Ivana ate tenderloin (look like tenderloin to me). Victoria Station is a big chain in Malaysia
Agree with Steve. Respect the meat. But yeah, I still CAN consider a little bit of gravy/sauce on a steak (as long as the gravy tastes real good). In my place in Ipoh, there's one dining place called 'David' s Diner'. They serve Authentic American cuisine (also Mexican and Italian as well).
@@JetLagWarriors for me, it is a good restaurant. Reasonable and affordable price. Plus, it is not a fine dining. Just a cozy and nice atmosphere dining place. Oh ya, before I forgot, they got Halal certification. So, they are absolutely not serving beer and any alcoholic beverages.

As for the steak, if you are not into sauce or gravy, you could always ask them to serve it without or on the side... I do that because I prefer the meat without the gravy too especially if I order lamb, prefer it with mint sauce
Steve and Ivana. In UK, we don't eat steak like thus, is Malaysian style western food. You are right. Go buy couple of nice steaks from Grocer Jaya. You can get good air flown steak from Australia and it's lovely.
Ivana's steak looks like a tenderloin/fillet mignon. It is not as big (diameter-wise) but it is cut thicker. Personally, I wouldn't pay RM109 for just ONE piece of steak. If I were to spend that amount of money, I'd go to Carnaval Churrascaria in Petaling Jaya. For slightly less than RM109, you'd get an UNLIMITED amount of steak, chicken, lamb, seafood. It is heaven for carnivores. Best of all, they got Picanha, the queen of beef! Too bad it's MCO now and you can't go there....
@@joycetan4684 Carnaval had deliveries during the last MCO. Perhaps they have it again now? But it lacks the full experience of a Churrasco, when the garcons come to your table with skewer and sharp knife and cut the meat onto your plate. Obrigado!!
Look at any recipes from (most) western chefs, myself included and they will say rest the steak, and quite often they will put a little butter on it. Here in Malaysia, eat straight out of the pan, covered in a Gallon of Sauce and Chilli SOS, depressing to see it like that, what a waste of good meat! "The reason it needs to rest is that the juices need time to redistribute, otherwise it will just flow away, leaving you with a brown, overcooked piece of meat. Beautiful channel, beautiful video. it's really amazing experience with your channel. Enjoying with your videos. Expecting more episodes. Be safe. My dream place
Steak with herbed butter is an actual thing. It's supposed to go on the steak when hot. Some (Malay)sian "western" food joints don't really know how to prepare steaks. They follow the menu, but are clueless about preparation and cuts of meat when it comes to steaks. Most of the time they just cook it to death and slather sauce on it, just like other things. I chalk it up to wanting it to be thoroughly cooked, because our cuisine are always "well done", and "medium" or "rare" are not in our food vocab. It's not a diss, because the everyday Malaysian wants to experience "western" food as well, but also want a cheaper price. So either they skimp on quality, or they don't know enough about how it's supposed to be done. Source: A Malay Malaysian who loves my steak bloody.
I've eaten at Victoria Station a few times. Mainly in Penang. I can say that they are one of the best steak houses in Malaysia. But they tend to overdo the meat a bit IMHO. I prefer my steak rare, but what I usually got served are those which I would call as medium-cooked, at least from my point of view.
Last time I went to Victoria Station, in Penang, not KL, we ordered the main course of Lamb which was like rubber, I also ordered Cod as not often available in Malaysia, which was just horrible was just soft and mushy. Being in the food industry (owned a Hotel & Restaurant in France and managed Bars here in Malaysia), I knew that they had microwaved the frozen cod and the Lamb was so overcooked, the staff could see we weren't pleased as over 70% of the food was left on the plates. It's not good as the price was in the region of RM150 for the mains plus a simple starter and 2 non-alcoholic drinks. Since then quite a few (local) friends told us similar stories where the staff were unattentive and food well below expectations. I've been to the Ship in 3 of their locations in Malaysia and never had a bad meal there, quite the opposite, it's a similar price range but the consistent quality of food and level of customer service is far superior. I notice in the comments people are recommending a number of places. I notice the title says Western food in Malaysia vs. in Canada, I truly hope that the food in Canada is far, far better than at this outlet, I'm sure it must be. Maybe in your case, because they saw the camera and clearly you were doing a review they made an extra effort.
You are not totally locked down... you can still go outside. MCO 2.0 rules fit both of you for going outside. No need to stay inside and read books only 😁. Good review for this restaurant... would like to taste the "western" cooking one day in KL.

Ivana, why not teach us make Indonesian satay. Would that be an interesting content? I definitely would love to know the spices and how are they different from our local satay.
I suggest you to try steak at Craveat Restaurant at Shah Alam Selangor next time you come..Also their pastas..for me,that’s the best restaurant for western food in selangor..for my taste its better than Tony Romas..
When traveling we're on a food spree session night & day to fully use our stay, but we still love steak.. specifically we always choose to go to a known world frenchizes to be on the safe side.. Chillies, Applebee's, tonny romas, on the border .. etc never had been disappointed, because they always maintain their global status & quality, even if there is gravy included it's in a side bowl.. 😋 but still personally I always look at pictures of the menu 1st..😂.. no picture no buy.. 😂🤣
Looks like dissapointment is in the air 😅 the way the waiter bring the condiment and sauce remind me of a indian style restaurant 😆 the moment i see the bread and salad i know that its kinda old style 80s cuisine..they should step up the game tho..
Personally if you want good steak at great price, it's hard to beat Grub. For aged steak I would go to La Caretas. Although you can get them at Beato, which is a Korean run steakhouse for aged steak. They are priceryyyyyy.
I suggest u do cooking vlog during lockdown like Canadian steak. show us how to respect the meat, haha with salt... do you marinate? normally, I don't like cos meat is tough, maybe you have techniques to make it soft. meat in Malaysia got 2 type, kampung cow n imported cow meat. kampung one taste better but more expensive cos fresh. after mco, maybe you can try tony/tommy? ramos steak restaurant in nu sentral beside kl sentral. this is from usa if not.mistaken.i dine there n tasted real good. As for the steak, if you are not into sauce or gravy, you could always ask them to serve it without or on the side... I do that because I prefer the meat without the gravy too especially if I order lamb, prefer it with mint sauce
good idea!
Butcher Carey is the place to go for good steak. They have picanha, British Hereford, Japanese Wagyu, Aus Wagyu, Argentine Devasa, etc.
wow sounds fancy!
My favorite is Colisium cafe&bar(jalanT.A.R)established in 1921!FULL of history&colonel style!
True, just across my place! Brings me back to Pampas Argentina!🇦🇷

Korean bbq😋😋
We miss Korea!!!❤️❤️❤️
Finally eat in restaurant. It is not true all good food is street food. Good quality meat or ingredients comes with a fair price
oh yes. Quality comes with a cost
The butter is for the corn Steve. Oh.. well.. any way it's still good
LOL🙈🙈🙈duh....😂😂😂
@@JetLagWarriors I'm pretty sure the herbed butter is for the steak. I've had a few that were served that way.
Another important thing to know is the residual heat will continue to cook your steak after you've removed it from the grill or the pan"

Ah I think you are right. Quality comes with a cost👍
Looked good....now back to KD!😀😀
The butter is for the corn, the steak is probably Australian, the best in the world if cooked right.
6:45 the metal containers remind me of Indian restaurant serving Tosay (Dosa) gravy. 😃
You are not totally locked down... you can still go outside. MCO 2.0 rules fit both of you for going outside. No need to stay inside and read books only 😁.
Good review for this restaurant... would like to taste the "western" cooking one day in KL.
really? We can still walk around and jog?
How about going to the mall?
@@JetLagWarriors Yes u can walk, jog and cycling in radius 10km. Going to a mall can i think only to take away food. Not sure other retail shops also open or not.

Shud try restaurant called 'Menate'

Before you leave Malaysia .. pls try wagyu steak. Super expensive but cheaper here compare to us or canada
I remember my 1st date with my ex bf was in Victoria Station n d Beef steak was really great...🥰👍🤗🌺
It is one of the best steakhouse in KL😋 feels really excited watching u guys eat😁 take care guys stay safe😘
Steak wise.. there's the Yanks and there's the Ausies.. you never go wrong with any.. 😘👌
Brits favorate dish is roast beef/fish & chips.. 🤗
Yummm. Thanks!
If you want to splurge go for WAGYU STEAK.
Soft.. juicy ... and marbling.
ooooh sooo expensive😭😭
we tried it once in Japan
Victoria station was once popular but i think its on a decline... also steak in malaysia is always expensive (more expensive than japan, US)
U can try hmm jahet fine meat where u can choose ur own meat cuts from its freezer range and the price is stated upfront by tags. Another u can try is N95.
Thanks for the recommendation!
When traveling we're on a food spree session night & day to fully use our stay, but we still love
steak..
specifically we always choose to go to a known world frenchizes to be on the safe side..
Chillies, Applebee's, tonny romas, on the border .. etc
never had been disappointed,
because they always maintain their global status & quality, even if there is gravy included it's in a side bowl.. 😋 but still personally I always look at pictures of the menu 1st..😂.. no picture no buy.. 😂🤣
Haha good tactics on choosing safe good food👍
Why they serve the Western food like banana leaves rice?
LOL best comment!!!
Ya, I was expecting the waiter to ask, sir...fish curry, chicken curry or Dhal?🤣
Looks like dissapointment is in the air 😅 the way the waiter bring the condiment and sauce remind me of a indian style restaurant 😆 the moment i see the bread and salad i know that its kinda old style 80s cuisine..they should step up the game tho..
Yeah was kinda like a banana leave serving style..after decades and all these years ur right, they shud have stepped up the game for sho
haha the food was actually good if only they lower the price....
How do the newer/modern restaurants serve the condiments ,sauce ,bread and salad ? I don't know much about western style servings . Please enlighten

Steak Cookout with Greg!!!
nice one!
Yes Steve... do a how to cook Canadian steak with Greg
Asome last meal guys.Enjoy.😋😋
Personally if you want good steak at great price, it's hard to beat Grub. For aged steak I would go to La Caretas. Although you can get them at Beato, which is a Korean run steakhouse for aged steak. They are priceryyyyyy.
I usually cook on my own as I like it medium rare and not many places can do it right.
wow!! You sound like a steak master
Go to Jake's Charbroil Steak or Castell Steakhouse if you want good old traditional North American style steaks.

I think u can't do barbecue in yr apartment unless you have open balcony or something...

Victoria Station, one of d best restaurants in KL that serves steak.
Did d two steak dishes cost more than RM 200? Have been there for so long.
One is 109, and one 85.
