Was the final design built around the original H Class plans for NZR? Curious as it differs from how H199 ended its working life, but your design resembles the 7.25 gauge engine at Cross Creek Railway Society. Although that engine doesn’t aim for accuracy.
Yes, I based it on the original drawings as delivered which has been a bit of a challenge as there are no photos of it in its original configuration with the closest being a couple of years after delivery. I went with that version as the open back is more suitable as a live steam model along with it being nicer looking in my opinion with the polished brass steam dome, spring balance safety valves and trim that was removed over its subsequent refits. The internal workings of the fell mechanism have also posed a challenge being so different to H199 as it stands in the museum.
They are certainly the most complex part of a loco and I’m not sure to many people full understand them but here’s what I have been using for reference . If it’s a stephenson’s or a walchaerts valve gear, ‘Design Procedures for Walchaerts and Stephensons valve gears’ by D.L Ashton is very detailed and there is a computer programme you can download for free to actually do the calculations it’s very old but it seemed to work. For a good description of the above valve gears but not designing ‘Valves & valve gears for steam locomotives‘ by Chas.S.Lake & A. Reidinger is an interesting read and if you want to learn about some less common ones ‘Locomotive Valves and Valve Gears’ by J.H. Yoder & G.B Wharen has descriptions and diagrams of quite a few of them. There also some websites, Don Ashtons as per first book www.donashton.co.uk/index.html Is a good start and has the programme mentioned, for the books I found them online at Tee Publishing in the UK

Thanks, I think kids would love the Thomas characters, I’m surprised I haven’t seen it done. The build has taken a back seat for a while, a house reno is taking priority at the moment but hope to be back to it soon with some more video to share.
There are many publications covering how to build a live steam locomotive by LBSC and Martin Evans to name a couple. The magazine Model Engineer and Engineering in Miniature" have serialised construction of dozens of locos in 2.5, 3.5, 5, and 7.25 inch gauges over the years.
Very interesting video! this CAD thingy.... I would like to have a go at it but I cant find my pencil sharpener! I was hoping to play about with using published designs for outside cylinders for a G1 scale loco but wanted to tweet them a little so my guess is I will have to watch numerous videos on fusion360 to get a better idea, needless to say the drawing board is not going just yet. Which references did you find to be useful for designing valve gear? Currently trying to use a book from the 1960's which is slightly lacking
