It's an ironic case of mass gaslighting, but this movie is older then the popularity of internet memes. Any true fan of the movie who was old enough to see it when it was released was baffled by this meme

It was a misquote, Morpheus never said that, people just saw the image macro with it so much that they assumed he did unquestioningly. This just has the scene where the image was screencapped from.
"I'm trying to tell you" was altered for the meme. Its probably why so many remember the line in the movie, this line (and the previous) are worded similarly. They have carry a similar meaning too.

I can't explain those.
