No kidding, painfully slow going. I was thinking of the need for a light weight walk behind powered sled/scoop on the same scale as the blower they have on the roof, with tracks, to maybe 5 or 10X the productivity of the process of moving snow to where the blower can chuck it off the roof.

I think it’s been more than 40 years since I’ve gone that route, went to Bakersfield College long, long time ago 😄 after Graduating from Bishop High school. DWP has dibs on all the water, that's not changing. Best we can hope for is the maintenance of the current reclamation program for Mono Lake and Owens Lake. This year was an absolute gift for reclamation side of the issue, but DWP is gonna continue to take the majority of the water from Owens Valley residents.

They’ve been making Los Angeles Department of Water and Power keep some water in Owens Lake because of the horrible air quality that the blowing toxins are making in the Owens Valley. It is or is one of the worst air quality problems in the Continental USA, sharing it’s issues with the Salton Sea.
The old pictures of Owens Lake with the snow capped Sierra Nevada mountains reflecting off of it’s surface as viewed from Cerro Gordo is pretty incredible! The Los Angeles Aqueduct took all of it’s tributaries, so the lake dried up. Mono Lake almost suffered the same fate!

Years ago I was trying to avoid rocks on the road in that beautiful Kern Canyon and I ended up hitting one that was “hidden” between the double yellow lines. It ripped open the sidewall of my front left tire of my Bonneville. Luckily we had a compact spare, unlike many cars today with no spare, but maybe a can of sealant that won’t work on anything but a slow leak.

1:32 The small condo complex in between the Mammoth Taproom & Eatery and The Village is where I used to live -- right at Ground Zero of the town, intersection of Main St. and Minaret Rd. How great would it have been to still be living there, with a gondola within a short walk from my front door to the Village and then on the mountain, without ever having to use my vehicle. None of that existed when I lived there 50 years ago; we had to drive all the way up to Main Lodge because that was the only developed location on the mountain. Being able to go out my front door and walk to a gondola and be on the mountain inside of 15 minutes would be SO epic....

Well it kinda depends, highway 178 is a 4 lane highway at the start people doing about 60-80mph not many CHP officers in this area. Then once you get into the Canyon it's really not that scary of a road, it may seem that way but it's really not. But usually around 20 cars go off the edge of the canyon a year. So far 317 people have died in the River since 1969 and we expect that number to skyrocket this year. There are guardrails as I have Spunout in the canyon and hit them before being sent back into the mountainside. Guardrails aren't used as much as we have Free range cattle who go up and down these hill sides, fall into the road and need to get off the road somehow. Guardrails keep them trapped, you can get a Falling rocks and cow sign shirt as its one of our famous signs.

Build a snow ramp for it and push the snow over the edge? Just a thought that might make things go a LOT faster on that expansive roof.

When it comes to photography thete is never a next time. Back up the truck, take the extra time, and get the shot. You'll only regret the ones you rolled by.

Ben, I'll run with whatever you tell me: I already put off my trip to Cali this month on account of the relentless snowstorms there at Mammoth, but I desperately want to get down there while there's this much snowpack on the Sierra. I didn't buy tire chains this season so I want to avoid having to get two sets just for this trip, plus I don't know what shape the Quality Inn property is in presently OR the roads in and out. Would you recommend holding off until May? Or can I roll the dice and go down in April? We of course have no idea what the weather has in store that far out, but I really wanna hit Owens Valley/Mammoth Mtn while there's this much snowpack, and with any luck I can hook up for a meet & greet with you and your compadres.

Wait until May. The snow will be there throughout July.

I would try wheel barrels on cleaning the flat roofs. That’s a lot of walking with little loads… just trying to look out & for something easier for those guys

The Roof Crew needs a better strategy. They are wasting time, energy and movement with their disjointed and ineffective approach. The roof should be divided into quadrants and worked from the inside out. The closest distance between two points is a straight line. That's the longest distance the snow should be moved.

You need a crane with roll off dumpsters. Put dumpster on roof with crane small crane fill dumpsters put them right onto trucks.

You guys are saving lives by lightening that roof load…unbelievable! Has Vons remained open? Too bad a military helicopter isn’t nearby; you could have it hover low and blow snow everywhere.

The scary part about getting all that snow in higher elevations is when it melts the people in the lower elevations get the after effects.

Seems to me heated mats on the flat roofs would make sense like heated floors. Melt it into water and let it drain to underground sewers that don’t freeze.
