Love the explanation. There's an interesting idea that the "Elijah's coming" panflet floating in the river, is actually different panflets that people other than Bloom have thrown away, since in the 2-something hours since it was thrown into the river by Bloom, there's no way it would still be afloat.
Also interesting to note, at one point the panflet is floating westward instead of eastward, and it may be because of the boat (it was something similar I can't remember) that was passing nearby, changing the tide momentarily in the river, something that Joyce perhaps accounted for.
Joyce loved coincidence and ambiguity!
