Echo sounders

This video shows the use of echo sounders and sonars in the ocean, from research vessels and other underwater platforms and vehicles. When a sound wave is sent into the water, echoes will come back if it hits an object or "target" -- note how echoes are generated when the sound wave hits single fish, a school of fish and the seafloor. Characteristics of the echoes help us observe and measure marine organisms.

The ships use ultrasounds that are out of the human hearing range. So what's the point of adding an inaudible sound.
