  • This giant rubber-powered airplane flies for more than 40 minutes! No joke! It is incredible! This is the largest hand-launched stick airplane we have ever seen and it weighs only 3.4 grams!
    Watch this video and see Josh fly his amazing airplane. It has a 5 foot (1.5 meter) wingspan and requires additional wire support to maintain its structural integrity! The wires are so thin, you can't even see them.
    This second annual event took place at the West Baden Springs Hotel in West Baden, Indiana on March 23rd-24th, 2019. This contest is to honor a United States F1D indoor free flight world champion, Jim Richmond, and the event is sanctioned/hosted by AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics.)

    Wonderful job filming that. You captured the true essence of a machine I cannot fully wrap my own mind around even after building it.

      Thanks, Josh! Filming this was the easy part for you have tamed these lions and uncaged these friendly beasts for all to see! Well done! 👍😀

    40 mins of fly?? If I achieve 40 seconds with a plane that I made I would be super happy.
    Efficiency to the max! These guys really know how to not waste energy.

    Just shared this on facebook and watch it again. It's Unbelieveable how long the rubber motor lasts and that these planes stay in the air for so long and fly at all despite so low propeller rotatary speed!

      I want a plane like that for my room! :D

    Wonderful to finally see the Hourglass III at full torque! Too bad about the “landing”, but I’ve no doubt Josh will get that fixed up in no time!

    • @NighthawkGliders
      @NighthawkGliders  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, indeed... and Josh tells me he can crank up the rubber motor even more. And with a little tweak, he’ll probably have that flying 50+ minutes. So... the story does not end here!

    • @joshuawfinn
      @joshuawfinn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I fixed it before packing it away. It's in the trailer ready for its next outing. :)

      Just as I thought you would! :) Can’t wait to see its next flight!

    • @AeroCraftAviation
      @AeroCraftAviation 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope! This is just the beginning! I think even an hour is not far-fetched, perhaps even the world record is within in capability of the Hourglass III.

      Thanks, Bill, for stopping by! Did you see the “invisible” wires Josh had on this thing to support the wings. Crazy stuff!

    • @dmytrosilin
      @dmytrosilin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NighthawkGliders , yes those wires are truly invisible - 0.001" tungsten. I can't see them, so use Kevlar tow instead.

    should make the wings double layered membranes and covertly pump some helium into them until the whole thing is weightless and then let fly/float forever lol

    I am from Italy. I don't understand how these wonderful airplanes models are governed . Are they let free ? Which are the goals of the balloons ? Thanks

    • @NighthawkGliders
      @NighthawkGliders  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The goal is to achieve the longest flight duration. They are very light. When launched, they fly in their own. But when they may collide with an object, the owner may use a helium balloon to change its course to a safe location. When balloon is engaged with the airplane, the stopwatch is paused and resumed after it’s disengaged again. These planes are amazing.
