This is what i originally thought, but after playing it a few times, the quick spell mechanic is excellent. Not a fan of programming myself, but they added a twist which makes it more enjoyable.
In our experience, the game is way more fun with the following house rules: 1 - Remove programming. All spells can be cast in any order, with your quick spell just being a more protected slot (usually no way to mess with it from other players). Why? 1.1 - The game state at more and more player counts changes EXTREMELY rapidly, you literally CANNOT foresee what will happen. This allows you to be way more reactive and not have so many dead turns because someone acted before you and ruined your entire turn. Being first player isn't a guarantee either, as you can trigger traps or have your first player token taken from you before turn begins (event phase). 1.2 - You might just get one shotted from certain mage/school combinations and lose all of your summons and position on the board, so if you don't have a way to adapt your round (set of turns) ... Dead round! 2 - Don't respawn in your own cell. Respawn... Wherever you like! Respawning in your own cell might, again, lead you to dead whole rounds (set of turns) where you just move and do literally nothing else. This adds an element of chaos and unpredictability in turns that combined with the more reactive gameplay feels way more in each players control. If you think this is too OP, you can set up a random generator to respawn in 1 of 3 random hexes. 3. Draw 3 keep 1 quests, instead of draw 1. Some quests are straight up impossible to achieve in any amount of turns with some mages/schools, specially if your opponents have any smear of intelligence (Hmmm I wonder why a completely spell based school is now spamming room minions?). This minimizes the risk of getting a impossible quest and being permanently behind compared to your opponents. 4. And this is only if you really like chaotic gameplay like we do ... All protection and trap spells can stay active WITHOUT CONSUMING A SPELL SLOT. This turns the game into a crescendo of tension and one small spark can cause a chain reaction that is just SO MUCH FUN. Anyway, this is obviously my opinion but damn if it hasn't worked out. I have Black Rose Wars, Black Rose Wars Rebirth and both Kickstarter stretch goals (sator box), 6P expansions and Apocalypse.
Great video. I got the 100% all in years ago as one of the first kickstarters I ever did. I was new to the hobby so I was blown away by all the plastic that it would provide. FF, 500 games in collection to this point, no space in my shelves....and this behemouth shows up. So overwhelmed by all the stuff, I still haven't looked at it. I want to like it, but it seems like it is soooo deep that you have to have people willing to make it a lifestyle game with you. Otherwise, you really aren't getting the most out of it.
I haven't played Rebirth, but Black Rose Wars is one of my favorite games that I've rarely played. I haven't found a group that wants to deal with the rules onboarding, but a playthrough of this game is a standout memory for me in board gaming. I love that you love this!
I'm currently playing Nova Aetas Renaissance from LMS right now, and the rulebook there is a mess as well. I think that's a very consistent weakness the company has, which is frustrating. We shouldn't have to dig through BGG to find an answer for something that should absolutely be in the rulebook. But, on the other hand, I've been really enjoying NAR despite that issue. 😅 Edit: good to know it plays well solo! I've been having issues scheduling with my group recently, so it'll be nice to test it out and learn the rules prior to introducing it to friends. 🌹
Interestingly enough, there was a mode for the original Black Rose Wars that allowed for greater asymmetry between the mages. Also, a few playable characters seem to have some special abilities but it can feel balance breaking or get expensive. Hyperion is an example of this. He is in an expansion from Nova Aetas Renaissance but he was given content that allows him to participate in BRW in a few ways.
I appreciate the cinematography and the explanation clealy of what cards look like and what abilities do and how turns work. I've seen far too many board game reviews where they just have the box art and they say something like "you have a guy and you can go over here and do a thing and then maybe you take a marker and you put it over here and that gives you a victory point and there so much you can do!" - yes a run on sentence because thats how they talk. I remember a reviewer once talking about the reasons a game might appeal to someone. In the middle of his sentence he said "you know if youuuu like to do stuff and ..." the sentence went on but it made me laugh. I do in fact like to do stuff, so this game must be for me. I don't think they are bad reviewers, I think some of them just have too much shit to review and they spend no time on the review. Of course you can't if you're playing 100 games in a month. Still, I prefer your approach, and i'll always look for review/gameplay videos with good audio and up close views.
🌹 Nice! Glad to hear you like it. I was a fan of the OG Black Rose Wars despite its flaws. I just love the theme, art, and overall aesthetic. Haven't unboxed my Rebirth yet, but excited to do so!
🖤🌹🧙♀️ I love how you we're able to incorporate Dwellings of Eldervale! I wasn't familiar with this title, but my ear picked up when you compared it to Dwellings. I have gone all in with Dwellings this month. With AE landing in just about 5 months. I am trying to reach the goal set by Daniel. I will take a deeper dive into this just because of your review. I will definitely let you know if or when I pull the trigger. Thanks again, Tim.⚔️🧙♂️🐲🐺
the two share so many similarities and with a solo mode, i think it's one to keep on your radar for sure Mark! I totally forgot how fast AE is approaching though thanks for the reminder!!
I have this AND the original. They both look amazing, but I just cant get around the rug book and the learning it’s going to take to sit down and actually PLAY. Now I feel like I have to sit down and just suck it up.
@@TimChuon NAR is amazing. Feels like final fantasy tactics the dungeon crawler. Some of the characters have mage cards for black rose. And the monsters have summon cards and avatar cards. Hyperion expansion is what you should look at. Great black rose stuff

Black rose wars and Oathsworn are both pretty complex for beginners! They’re also both around $100~ for the base game alone 😅 ultimately, if you want to play a campaign/story driven game alone, Oathsworn would be a better choice. If you want to build out lots of cards, cast lots of spells and play against an AI solo, then BRW would be a better fit~

Tim I have to say, 1 great video. Two, I wish I had your intellectual capacity to quickly learn games. I went for help from the discord community and was met with willingness to help, but a few saying just read the rulebook again. I have, twice. It's a mess and not easy to learn. I have a hard time conceptualizing games until I can see a play through. Especially ones with bad rulebooks. I want to play this game, I really do but it doesn't look like it is in the cards. Might be time for me to vacate the hobby entirely.
TIMMMMMMMMMMMMM! You gotta do some full play throughs with your friends for this game. I really think it would be a hit. I already sorted my way through the rulebook that, as you already said is the "barrier to fun." If Ludus Magnus Studios could give this game some TLC post launch, they have a gem on their hands. If they don't do an FAQ, errata and follow up supporting the game they will have blown a big opportunity.
I always thought Black Rose Wars was underrated. It’s a fun wizard slugfest that elicits tons of laughs and more than a fair share of don't-you-dare moments. I’m psyched for this next iteration. Anxious to see how the improvements play out.
